Strome was driving back to the east coast last week and got stuck in a layover in Columbus. Got drunk and accidentally signed a contract. Jarmo faked a New Jersey accent for the whole thing.
Is that why he wound up in Anaheim?

Good for Strome. His bad misses this postseason were really the nail in the coffin, but talk about found money out of the blue in the middle of a rebuild.

I still don't get it. There was no team in the league willing to pay like a 6th or 7th round pick for Pacioretty + Coghlan. I don't believe that.
It has everything to do with the fact the canes didn't have to send any cap back at all. Usually when a team take a big contract like this they want to send some salary the other way. That didn't happen here.

sorry long day but am I missing something? Isn't line 3 gonna be either the kid line or something like Blais-Chytil- Kakko?
Kravtsov Chytil Blais is what I expect.

Goodrow on the fourth line with the leftovers (Hunt, Reaves, Brodzinski, and Ryder).

Don't they have almost 10aav deals for Kuch, Vasi and Point? And a good chunk for Hedman. Don't know how they will make it work once these contracts kick in.
Same way we have money for Panarin 11 Mika 8.5 Fox 9.5 Trouba 8 then have kreider Goodrow Shesterkin and Trocheck signed long term

Teams find a way to pay their best players

3LW could be open. Right now it's Blais, but if one of the young guys kills it in camp, he could be bumped down and Reaves goes to the press box.

Wonder if Gallant would trust a pseudo "kids line" of Othmann-Chytil-Kravtsov. Could be Kakko there just cause him and Fil do well together.

$16m isn’t that much when you are getting $70m and he probably already has earned another $30m or so, right? This isn’t his first extension as a star player.

It’s not shocking at all that a player would prefer his choice of market and $70m versus playing somewhere he hates and $86m. Anything you can do with $86m you can do with $70m.
Yeah for sure, I agree with you fully personally but I just feel like it's super rare to see a guy go leave his current team and their large offer when the offer he accepts elsewhere ends up being that much lighter. I mean, <5m or so you see all the time on big deals like this but 16m is not unsubstantial, just caught me eye a bit.

Game 5 will haunt me until September/start of the season
Game 3 should the one that haunts you

There are massive tax differences from Calgary to Columbus

JG can afford a private charter, if not lease his own private jet, for him, or his family, and he does not have to live all that close to them. No customs for domestic flights. He does not have to deal with tri state traffic day to day. Sounds like a good idea to me.

There are a lot of false reports on what was offered. LeBrun said the Devils came in at over 9 and someone else said Isles under 9. The offer that was floated earlier before he signed was $12M 7 years from CBJ which is not even close. The reports of NJD doing $10M+ may or may not be true and the Jacket's $9.75M may be the best offer on the table on top of tax advantage in OH compared to NJ or NY.

If we learned anything this week, these "insiders" were really fishing for clicks with their non stop rumor mongering. All these reports about Kane, JT Miller, et al. ... Frank Seravelli in particular was almost Eklund like with his bullshit spewing about Kadri...his credibility should be taken with a grain of salt from this point forward.

When the TDL rolls around, we need to all take a breath & not jump off the ledge when every single player is linked to us.

I would think the 12m was from Calgary.

Love gaudreau going to Columbus even though I don't love the thought of playing against him.

In typical NHL fashion the team that signs the best deal also signs the worst on the same day. Gudbranson had a great season for Calgary but not 4x4 good.

Personally I find the jackets an easy franchise to root for (except against us). Kekkalienen has been a ballsy GM from the get go and you have to admire that team taking swings when they're there.. great for the city that the biggest UFA signs with them. With the youth they have in their system they could be a force down the line.

In all it was a way more interesting day than I expected. I don't love trochek or the deal, but seeing what other teams are doing, I can accept that we needed to make the deal to keep pace. NJ has a better goalie, Carolinas not going anywhere, Pittsburgh too, Washington gets a goalie, NYI will be better than last year, and even philly got better.

Still like where we stand relative to the field, but it's going to be an interesting battle next season, especially with Ottawa and even Detroit to a lesser extent making the moves they did.
