I think Karlsson is a much easier sell in the off-season once the cap is like $10 million higher and teams like Florida and Carolina don't have Ekblad and Burns on their books anymore. The Penguins would still have to retain, but Karlsson at $7 million should be workable for either team with their contracts expiring. The Penguins could take more money back to improve the return, but I think they could at least get something for Karlsson at $7 million once the cap rises.

It's one thing to take back a single bad contract like Dumba from Dallas to make the deal work at the deadline, but if the Penguins have to be saddled with numerous terrible deals to make a deal, they're better off just waiting until the off-season when the cap shoots up and more teams have money.

lmao nobody was excited about Dubas

Adding a lot, retaining a lot, and taking back a lot of contracts.
It’s going to take A LOT of sugar to move EK.

Literally why would they move him then? If it costs assets to move Karlsson, just let him rot on the carcass that is the Penguins roster until his deal is up.

What a disaster Dubas is.
Did he sign the Letang deal? Because Letang is the one playing like shit. They traded a late 1st and cap dumps for Karlsson. Pens fans wanted Granlund gone for a long time before that trade.

Dubas does suck but the Karlsson move seems worse than it actually was because Letang sucks now and Granlund bounced back in SJ

Yeah Karlsson is what he is, he's a top OFD that can't play defense. But Letang is legitimately awful at this point and I'm pretty sure he has even more years left than Karlsson does.

Karlsson is a flawed but dynamic OFD still. His contract just sucks and he's a niche player that you need to build for.

honestly would love him on Detroit.

But he’s always been a favorite of mine.

Oh well.

Detroit now has a ton of cap space with Husso gone and Copp on IR to fit Karlsson this year. I think he’d also fit in really well next to Edvinsson and would make a great mentor for ASP when he comes over. Depending on retention by Pittsburgh, the deal makes a lot of sense to me.

Subban made that claim in the intermission of the WSH game. I never heard it was that much.

I didn’t hear it from there
It was TSN Radio overdrive where they talk about the NHL pretty much 90% of the time as they should

I am not privy to that contract.
They said “he’s making like $7 or $8 million a year and building a very flawed roster”

Dubas has already said that he doesn’t want to take back a third salary this season. The penguins are already taking on salary for Petry and Smith. So it seems the penguins will trade Karlsson after the season ends.

Every roster transitioning to a rebuild is "flawed." If Dubas doesn't rush the rebuild it should be fine. If they foolishly rush just to make a team competitive before Crosby retires it'll likely fail miserably like most rushed rebuilds do.

Karlsson has 2 years left after this one? He could be a target for Montreal if his cap is taken down to ~8M. He could be the perfect fit on the second pair to play with Guhle while Reinbacher and Mailloux get their reps in and are more experienced.

Would Pittsburgh would take back a guy like Gallagher and a pick? If not, I wouldn’t mind doing a Laine-type deal where we deal a young LHD (Struble?) for Karlsson and a pick.

D pairing could like look like:

Karlsson - Guhle
Hutson - Carrier
Xhekaj - Mailloux/Reinbacher
