I don't care what he does while vacationing in the summer in a fluff tournament. Not saying he's contending for a Vezina, but the guy still has plenty to offer a young team.

He's certainly not an albatross (a psychological burden that feels like a curse). Come on.
HE isn't an albatross but his contract certainly is, even more so when you add up Staal, Shatty and I can't think of who else. Smith's is movable to AHL.

Okay you guys pushing this center talk are grinding my gears

If Panarin comes here, it's not really an issue unless you shoehorn him to Zibanejad's wing. He can carry a line.

I am very curious at where the feeling the narrative began that we, the anti-Panarin crowd, said that the Rangers have no interest in him or will not check in and see what can be done. I do not recall ever stating that. Nor do I recall anyone else ever stating that. Our views on Panarin are one thing, but we have been pretty realistic as far as what our take on what Gorton and JD would check in on.

Yeah and almost all of it was coming pre draft lottery before we added a potential franchise talent.

It doesn't matter cause the fix stays exactly the same regardless of the scenario.

Need to pay Buch a bit more? If he's that important to the team you can make moves. If the Rangers prospects are as good as we think they are, a cheap replacement isn't rocket science. There will be cap casualties. There always are. Isn't that the nature of being a contender?

I'm not even pro-Panarin, believe it or not.

I don't doubt that.

I don't think Panarin is that important. I think the Rangers see him as a good piece and they are willing to pay a certain amount. And yeah, cap causalities are the nature of being a contender but caving and over paying isn't how you build a long term contender. It is fundamentally bad practice to manage a team, business, anything with that mindset. You will never be as successful long term.

It's quite possible the Rangers are low balling because of Panarin's agent using the Islanders as leverage.

Gorton is probably saying [in his southie accent]

"Relax...I don't know where da f*** he's signing, and I don't know if he's signing here, but there's no f***ing way he's signing with da f***ing Islanders...who wants Dunkin'? I'm buyin!"

And these are all the more reasons to play hardball. If you want Manhattan, first class everything, and a team who isn't bouncing between crap arenas for several more years, then you take our offer. Otherwise enjoy riding the LIRR to home games.

The Rangers need to start acting like a ****ing destination and not a desperate socialite looking for attention with their checkbook. You want to be a Ranger? Great. Show us.
Oh, I'm in complete agreement there. The Shattenkirk contract turned out terrible, but I love the process. He wanted to play here, and took less money and term to do it. Now, I don't expect the Panarin situation to be quite the same, but if the dude wants to play here for all the reasons you listed, he's going to have to accept a lower offer. His agent is out there doing what agents do: trying to leverage the best offer possible. Can't fault him for that.

Again, I think Panarin's already made his decision. It's a great situation to be in to have an acceptable offer already on the table, and just letting the process play out to see if you can squeeze just a little bit more.

I am well aware of the difference...
Then you understand that in the same situation McDavid would be asking for the max contract. The assets to acquire McDavid now would cripple this team. You start with Kakko and Miller and then keep adding. When you think you're done adding, don't stop because you have barely just begun.

Also, the 'center' in today's NHL is not as important as it once was. We see guys like Kane and Giroux absolutely control play from the wing. That used to be just the centers job. Kakko, Kravtsov, Panarin all can play like centers in terms of controlling the play. Oh and Zib is wonderful at it

We'd probably have to give them Rod Gilbert and the T-shirt cannons too.

Applause!!
I agree wholeheartedly!

Pretty sure almost every post I wrote was prefaced or included some version of, I'd never put it past the Rangers.

I still think it's a bad long term idea in terms of them building a roster capable of contending for enough years for them to maybe win a cup or cups

Why the #2 pick would have changed things given he is 10 year younger than Panarin I have no idea, yet it certainly changes my perception of what they meant by patience.
