Why the #2 pick would have changed things given he is 10 year younger than Panarin I have no idea, yet it certainly changes my perception of what they meant by patience.
Not only Kakko, but we have maintained all along that there ARE several paths to Panarin. Just that some dominoes needed to fall. I have not changed my mind at all regarding him, but still maintain that there are paths to him. But the superlatives that we have heard over the last week.....Gorton wants him "bad", Rangers are going "hard" after him, Gorton is "all-in" on Panarin.......I have yet to see anything that indicates that at all.

Of course Gorton would want him. But it is only at the price level that he is comfortable with for the future capital structure. And only if it fits within all of the other moving pieces of his plan.

Have a feeling it may drag out too, unless the Rangers have been extremely clear to his camp that this is the deal and that is it and Panarin "caves" (not really caving when you are banking 80 million!) because its really the only place hes wanted to go to.

If we miss out on Panarin, how about checking in with Stasny/LAV? If we retain 1/2 on Strome which saves them 5 mm in space, what else do we add considering their cap issues?

Easy flamers

Yep that's the way these contracts usually work. You sign long-term to get the benefit at the front and make your run, and you suck it up at the end (or buy it out, trade it, etc.).

We got a lot of mileage out of Hank, and had a few runs at the Cup. It's a big cap hit now but our other two goalies will be pretty cheap until one gets the next starter contract anyway.
Hanks' deal also looked worse earlier than expected because of how the goalie position evolved.

Should we offer sheet someone?
So much risk in an offer sheet. I wouldn't do it if I were NYR.

But, if I'm some garbage team like MIN, I'd offer sheet Marner. They're perpetually stuck in mediocrity, so the likelihood of any of those 4 1sts turning into anything special is pretty low. They're one of the oldest rosters in the league, and they don't have much help on the way in terms of prospects outside of Kaprizov. That's a recipe for an offer sheet if I ever saw one.

Let me give you a fork to fluff that up some more ;)
Excuse me? Take a look at my posts regarding him and point to me just one single instant where I have stated that Gorton does not want him or will not check in on him. Then also show me a single instance where I said that there are no paths to him.

You seem to be very easily confused. MY opinion is that I do not want him here. And have given my reasons. However in NO CASE did I EVER stay that Gorton will not check in on him or there are no paths to him.

I would ask you to pass the fork to me, but it seems that you are dining in a completely different restaurant.

My mistake

Just realize his limits are obviously a lot different than yours and a lot of the anti-panarin camp.

Brace yourselves, he’s gonna be a ranger in a few hours

LGRs

that isn't even remotely the point...again it doesn't matter how much you think panarin is worth. whatever you think that value is 'just add another $1.5 mil cause who cares' is terrible logic.

I'm not anti-panarin, I'm pro-common sense

If Gorton is comfortable with the rumored price, my faith in him takes a hit.

Selling and stockpiling is the easier part of rebuilding, Edmonton can do that. Timing and cap management beyond that are equally if not more important.

panarin and mika would play together forming a very dangerous line.

its that 2C that is the issue bc right now, there isn't anyone that excites me there no matter who the wingers might be.

strome, andersson. chytl or howden. woof. can't have those guys trying to center bread man.

names may actually be the best choice of all. sadly.

It's nice to have all these numbers thrown out without the Rangers in every conversation.

I still don't want to see us sign Panarin, though. He's a very good player, and I don't think there's a question about that, but I do not want to carry that contract.

12 x 6

seems like a deal is there to be had.

if it happens, CK is done here

and the rebuild morphs into a "retool"

who's the 2C though ?

the rebuild doesn't morph into anything...if we sign panarin it will be because he is viewed as part of the rebuild, just like trouba. it isn't being done to speed up the process. how much better it makes us next year isn't the important thing, its how much better you think he makes us over the next 6-7 years

Hanks' deal also looked worse earlier than expected because of how the goalie position evolved.

I would argue it looked worse because of AV's terrible defensive system forcing Hank to play his ass off or get annihilated but sure

Of course this would come down to the Rangers overpaying, or he goes to the hated Islanders.

It can’t just be that he goes to harmless Florida or Columbus.

The hated Islanders haven't been past the second round in a quarter century, so not too worried.

Names had hugely inflated performance playing with super-elite players. Just a thought.

Do the Rangers have a capologist or is that Gorton?

If Gorton is the "capologist" the Rangers are dumb. I know he's a business guy but he has too much on his plate to handle that type of analysis, especially since during a time like this you likely need to have a TON of models prepared to respond to the fluid nature of free agency.
