that is a huge difference between being willing to go as high as $12 mil and saying 'another 1.5 mil doesn't matter' which was the comment being made. if 'another 1.5 mil' is meaningless than its meaningless no matter what figure you are adding it to. 'its just another year' or 'its just another mil' is how you end up with a disaster of a contract. I don't care if you think panarin is worth $10 mil or $12 mil, whatever value JG determines he is worth there needs to be a limit and a point that you'd walk away
Just realize his limits are obviously a lot different than yours and a lot of the anti-panarin camp.

Brace yourselves, he’s gonna be a ranger in a few hours

I dunno...I recall a 3rd liner absolutely torching us in the playoffs this one year to stop us from winning the Stanley cup.

I also recall the rangers esentially being carried by their 3rd and 4th lines to that Stanley cup ..

So yeah..I'd say every dollar counts

It always does. No good GM goes into it saying with the mindset of "whats another $1.5 million". You can't successfully run a team that way or you turn into the Oilers.

This kinda leaves out a key aspect that Staal is the worst defenseman on the team though, does it not? If he was still a strong top 4 D the contract is much less of an issue.
Look at every single long term contracts we've given out since..hell.... 1990.

Is there a single one where the player finished his career here and we didn't absolutely hate the contract the final few years? Even Henrik .. and sure fire first ballot hall of famer, one of the greatest players of our generation .. is looking like an albatross

You're simplifying it down to this when that isn't the only area where an extra $1.5 million could be helpful.
It doesn't matter cause the fix stays exactly the same regardless of the scenario.

Need to pay Buch a bit more? If he's that important to the team you can make moves. If the Rangers prospects are as good as we think they are, a cheap replacement isn't rocket science. There will be cap casualties. There always are. Isn't that the nature of being a contender?

I'm not even pro-Panarin, believe it or not.

You think other teams were reading Brook's article and getting their information from there? Those other teams knew the Rangers limits before Brooks had his breakfast.
We're talking about the Islanders and it seems to me Brooks was trying to help them.

Still not in favor of signing Panarin but I hope it proves to be true that Gorton held the line on his offer and didn't cave.
Honestly, if Panarin wasn't staying in CBJ for a $100M check, I don't think he's going to want to play on LI either. NYR are the most attractive destination left on the board. I'm sure they're offering a "fair" contract, just not the one with the most total dollars. They'll use contract structure and up-front dollars to their benefit to help bridge some of the gap between their offer and other teams. Panarin's agent is doing the smart thing and trying to milk as much as he can. In fact, I bet the Panarin has already made his decision. His agent needs to be careful, though. Teams can and will move on to other options and the money will evaporate.

I can safely tell you guys that JD is a big fan of Panarin the player and the person. But for Gorts, it comes down to dollars and not risking too much early in the rebuild. Do the Rangers want him? ABSOLUTELY. Just at their price.

Rangers still feel they are in it for Panarin. Meaning they are holding tight to their ask and they know Panarin is using the Isles to try and drive up the price.

If you are buying a car that you have your eyes set on sooner or later you wind up caving to the dealership demands. He wants NY.

Obviously 11-11.5 is a ton of money but its what the Rangers said they wouldnt budge off all along. If you support Panarin coming here or not, If Gorts pulls this off you gotta give him major cred.

If they leak the number they say they arent moving off of and land the best UFA on the market on their terms, Gorton instantly becomes one of if not the best GM in the league, especially considering what he's done over the past 14 months or so.

And that sets a precedent for all of the other deals to come.

Can we put a decent team in front of this guy again before we call him an albatross? Jesus. The last two years, especially last year, Hasek would've been an "albatross". Our team sucked.

Our D featured Pionk as a ONE.

Panarin by himself makes no sense unless there's a young cheap C in the trade pipeline.

I still don't think they will move forward that quickly. Guess I'm the only one here. Hive mind has already resigned itself.

Unlike the islanders, NYR is a nice organization to play for. Players WANT to come here. I wonder how many players have NYI on their NO TRADE list. LOL

12 x 6

seems like a deal is there to be had.

if it happens, CK is done here

and the rebuild morphs into a "retool"

who's the 2C though ?
