Why would Matthews even consider signing for a dumpster fire team like Arizona? They might not even be there when Matthews extension kicks in.

If you could get Florida to bite do a 1 for 1 . Matthews for Barkov. I don't see Florida doing it. Heck I wouldn't if I were in their shoes but I think it pretty close to fair.
This is the best and somewhat most realistic proposal so far, but only if he signs in Florida

I am not saying I'd want to do this. But this is what it would take

Petterson + Demko + 2023 1st or something insane like that
This is for Mathews not McDavid.

I don’t even think I would do Matthews for ep40 considering the upcoming contracts, and crazy upside for pettersson

This Matthews to Arizona angle is a pipedeam. It's not going to happen and there a million reasons why it doesn't make sense.

Sure, but the one big reason they could do it
Marketing.
And the Arizona badly needs marketing right now

No, the Yotes need competent ownership, management, a legit arena, and more talent. Gutting the team to trade for Matthews or blowing their wad on Matthews only for him to be the only player of note on the roster isn't going to do much.

Again, this is all assumption that they stay in Arizona, which is leaning in a different direction.

NHL should allow a player to re-sign with his team by June 20th. One year before his contract actually expires. If the player hasn't signed, the team can trade him before July 1st.

Otherwise, an agent and player could do a team dirty by saying they will sign on July 1st. They change their minds. And a team is left with a player who potentially now has a NMC and said player is in control.

The team now has no leverage because other teams now know they can't pick and choose as much.

I agree. But I was just trying to table an offer that Leafs fans should say yes to. Just to see where were at

Or just not have such a bad GM. Dubas still drops his pants and lets the NMC kick in before the June 20 deadline. Youre still in the same spot.

Easy to say after 5 1st overall lottery picks including winning a generational talent AND having the city pay for your new arena (yes, I am bitter about it still).

Not saying you aren't right but it would be nice if fans of teams arguably saved by unbelievable good luck didn't insult the really unlucky franchises. Coyotes fans get it enough from other fans (including teams they have had better attendance than frequently over the years AND have also won a 1st OA).

Its hard being a fan of this franchise:(

Assuming Mathews came extended let’s say at 8 years 13mil per then I’d say these are the destinations that’d make sense.

LA, Carolina, Columbus

What’d I think would be fair

LA- Byfield, Durzi, Kempe and 2024 1st

Carolina- Aho

Or

Carolina- KK, Jarvis, Nikishin and 2024 1st

Columbus- Kent Johnson, Boqvist and Cole Silinger

Of course, he does, because he knows they're likely to give him the biggest contract.

It's great Matthews wants to stay, but if he's asking for 14-15M a season on an 8-year deal, does Toronto pull the trigger...?

Sure - but what team is going to trade for Matthews if he won't re-sign for 14-15M a year?

In your imaginary scenerio, he's untradeable and stays in Toronto.

What incentive is there for Matthews to do that? His NMC kicks in July 1st, why would he do a sign and trade when the ability to choose where to go would soon be available to him? Plus the team he wants won't have to gut their roster of assets

What team would Matthews want to go to that could afford him (a UFA Matthews) against the cap *without* losing some of their own salary?

Also, I don’t think matthews gives two shits about how many draft picks a team does or doesn’t have, and probably would be replacing their #1 center anyways. Matthews waiting for UFA makes zero sense for anyone.

He signs or he gets traded, and if he gets traded it won’t be to win, it’ll be for money.

If he wants to win and get paid, he stays in toronto

In a lot of these scenarios, Matthews will not be playing hockey anymore, because no one can afford him, or he’s terrible and only worth a late 1st, or he’s a rental and no one will trade for such an expensive rental, etc etc

Bottom line is matthews will sign for over $12.5 and be playing somewhere (likely Toronto) or he will be traded for a huge haul

It was only 4 1st overalls......

Phoenix is a nice city but they should have moved the Coyotes from there years ago. The league needs to move them to a city where they have more municipal support and a building that's ready to go.

Maybe but he is signed next year and has said he plans on playing past this contract. If AM wants to be in LA he can come as a UFA. I hope the Kings have no interest in trading for him.
How can you say it when Toronto having interest in trading him to Kings?

Couple of proposals

To Toronto-
Kempe
Clarke
22nd overall pick
2024 1st Round Pick

To Kings-
Matthews
28th overall pick

Or

To Toronto-
Henrique
2nd overall pick
Mctavish
Mintyukov

To Ducks-
Matthews
Robertson
28th overall pick
I really don’t see the point in adding pieces we don’t want or need , so you can add more premium pieces. From both teams perspective. Should really only focus on matthews

Anaheim isn’t trading Mintyukov as he is our biggest hope of having a #1 dmen again. And same for kings and Clarke

I could see a world where the #2 is moved for matthews…. But no clue how much I’d add to that…. You rarely see a high draft picked move…. And the ones that did end up high draft picks were not expected to be that high

To Arizona:
-Matthews

To Toronto:
-6th overall 2023 (will get a great player like Smith or Michkov)
-Guenther
-Geekie

OR

-Cooley
-6th overall

OR
-Keller
-Cooley/6th overall

I don’t think I’d give up more than that if I’m Arizona, but maybe a small add like a 2nd/B Prospect/decent roster player.
I doubt that Arizona would do any of these trades and instead wait for UFA and although AM is from Arizona does he really want to play for the Yotes?
