Any team that has the premium assets and draft capital and cap to take on Matthews and is sure that he will sign with them in free agency will just wait for him to reach it.

Unless the team that is willing to giving up 6th overall + Geekie think somehow their window to win the cup is next year and nothing beyond.
How can any team be sure any player will sign with them in free agency. Your take is even more ridiculous then the one I previously commented on. Try and use a little logic and common sense when commenting.

Why give up assets when you can just sign him in a year?

Because if the Leafs trade him anywhere but your team, there's a reasonable chance he's going to sign there.

Nothing is certain.... but you look at the history of most higher-end NHL players -- they don't often "pick their destination" based on factors other than money.

Even the money, it's usually more about what the money says (about how they are valued) than needing it in their bank accounts. Hockey players are conditioned from a very young age to not try to "pick destinations".

That's not to say Buffalo or Winnipeg or Ottawa are going to go into a potential deal believing that him signing is realistic.... but as long as it's a reasonably attractive destination, and they go in prepared to give AM the contract he feels he's worth, then they'll have a pretty good shot at signing him.

Signed Matthews for JT Miller and Hughes?

Because no team is guaranteed to sign any player in free agency. It's like saying why not win the lottery if you are poor lol. It's called logic, try using some.
Agreed.

"Hey he is available in a year. Why trade for him now when he is offered when we can compete with at least 25 other teams next year!!"

I am not saying I'd want to do this. But this is what it would take

Petterson + Demko + 2023 1st or something insane like that
This is probably one of the best offers I've seen. I think the Leafs would have to add a solid RD prospect in this scenario.

Some of the hypotheticals in this thread are hilarious. We see what real word trades look like and none of them ever hit the delusion of fan made ones. Leafs better off locking up AM then pretending they will land locked up 1c 1G and a first lol. Or keep using "logic" pr whatever bullshit word you want to sleep better at night.

Your a perfect example of what emotion over logic looks like. You took the premise of one trade offer out of many and ran with it to make your point. Using logic while posting about potential trades includes the past precedent of previous trades. Just because you don't realize that doesn't make it any less true.

Responding with an emoji certainly proved me wrong lol.

If I am Arizona or LA I probably take the chance and wait until FA. Realistically there are likely only around 10 teams who could make it work financially for Matthews, 5 of those he probably doesn’t even explore. LA and Arizona seem to be the two teams likely to make a run for him.

People here thinking 32 teams will be after him in FA.

There is not a single player in the league that wants to play in Arizona right now, including the players on their own team.

There is no reason in the world to sad that a ppg 47 goal 88 pt player in 2018 is or was a 2C.

He was 3rd in the league in goals his first year here and has kept up pace.

He is our second best C who took 14% of the cap and left 2 million in the table

If this was a 100 million cap it wouldn’t be an issue.
If you need to use the GM who gave away Stutzle as a high bar you know why Dubas got let go . Just because there was someone dumber doesn't make you smart. It's a bad contract and it doesn't fit a healthy team salary structure. And it's just another bad contract on top of bad contract and bad contract with their stars.

You seem to defend the obvious flaws on the Leafs at every turn. Why do you think the Leafs fail in the playoffs year after year with this core and constantly rearranging the rest of the deck chairs year after year?

Once July 1 comes you are doing that anyway.

A considerable amount of futures would be required plus salary to balance it out.

Something like....

Jeff Skinner - Salary
Owen Power - Future #1 D man but still not Buffalo's best
Matthew Savoie - Future top 6 Centre with limited room in Buffalo
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen - Young #1 goalie squeezed out by Devon Levi

Buffalo would look something like this up front....

Cozens - Matthews - Oloffson
Quinn - Thompson - Tuch
Peterka - Krebs - Greenway
Okposo - Jost - Middlestadt

Leafs would likely ask/demand Thompson rather than Skinner and Savoie ...but, its one of the more realistic offers on here.
if it was Dahlin rather than Power, it may even get it done, but, personally, i'd prefer Power ...i think he's going to be great

I wouldn't give Power alone.

After that they still have no goaltender and pretty meh defence.

We've heard over a decade now how Buffalo is just about to become a power house. It's getting old.
I'm no fan of the Sabres just stating a very likely outcome.

Considering he’s going to be able to block any trades soon, If they plan to trade him, It’s now or never.

Of course they can go the Nylander or Marner Route, But it all depends if AM Signs or not.

I’m just curious about the framework of a Matthews trade might be?
If you could get Florida to bite do a 1 for 1 . Matthews for Barkov. I don't see Florida doing it. Heck I wouldn't if I were in their shoes but I think it pretty close to fair.
