WOOOOO GONNA USE THE PROCEEDS FOR A DOWNPAYMENT ON A GUENTZEL JERSEY 🦅

I think they gave the wrong Connor the third star of the game. I guess Canada had to get their's somehow. Helle and the USA defensive game were both rock solid. That McDavid goal was a thing of beauty though.

US has overtaken Canada and it’s never going to go back. Love it.
Resisting the patriotic urge to declare American Hockey as the new gold standard after B2B World Juniors and this win but I still have to acknowledge Canada produces the higher end elite talent (Crosby, McDavid, MacKinnon). We just have almost 10x the population and the difference in depth is not as drastic as it was before.

So.. assuming Canada wins in regulation against the fins, we get a rematch on Thursday right? (and I guess if the Fins were to win in regulation it’d be them vs the US?) due to both beating Sweden.

Man I'd love even one of team USA's dmen on the penguins. Faber, Slavin, Mcavoy, Hanifin, Fox, Werenski.. all so good. Was a masterclass defensive performance tonight.

I don't know about that, Canada still produces the most NHLers by a good margin. But this is the first time ever the US team looks better on paper imo.

lol if Makar is back for a rematch game I would think Canada probably wins.

Btw Celebrini, Bedard, Dupont and McKenna are all Canadian.
I think every game between each roster is such a toss up so maybe… but also no Quinn Hughes man… both sides down their 1D.

I’m not saying Canada will never win a game or tournament again. They very well may win Thursday. They may win in 2026, 2030, 2034. But US has better roster, and besides being paper champs we executed better for a night as well.

Big win for US hockey morale obv. But more importantly — after a decade of zero best on best— game is symbolic or foreshadowing (or whatever word is most apt) for the strides USA hockey has taken. And will continue to take as such a larger country. On some level Canada is fighting a math problem.

With the infrequent best on best and the little # of games in each tourney (unless a single country destroys the next 4 tournaments) it will probably take 20-30 years to crown USA hockey. But eventually it’s going to happen and it will be nearly impossible for Canada to take it back over the long run.

The thing about international sport though is that once a population base is large enough to support getting the necessary number of elite performers, there's only so much more that more does. Which Canada more or less does. Unless the US development program starts chucking out a Crosby/McDavid every three years, for me it's hard to say they'll pull decisively ahead. And so far they've not produced one. Some great players, but nobody on that level.

For me the question is do you expect Canada rosters to keep throwing up flaws like Binnington for a goalie or Bennett as the best enforcer to match against the Tkachuks (20/20 hindsight but, throwing up in my mouth, I'd have taken Tom Wilson) or whether you think this is a quirk of the moment. To me this feels more like quirk.

I don't think the US will throw the Sweden game, but their motivation won't be as high, as they're already in the Final.
That opens the door for Sweden to take it.
Will be interesting to see who gets the other spot.

The tie-breakers, in order: H2H > RW > ROW > GD > GF
There's others put in place in case 3 teams tie, but that's no longer mathematically possible, and thus moot.

if Dubas was serious about giving Sid one more run before he retires he should have kept Jake. Dude is elite.

I pity those that cannot separate club and country and root for the USMNT because of Sully lol.

I hate him but he coached a tremendous game tonight.

Honestly I think Sullivan is a good coach and his system can still work with the correct talent. He's just criminally stale here and has basically refused to adjust to work with what he has here.

It's weird that he turned down the job in NJ last off-season, I feel like he could make New Jersey an absolutely lethal team. Keefe has improved them but I think Sullivan could have taken them to a higher level.
