@BehindTheTimes proud of you man, you’re killing it in this thread. Keep going.

Me, I gotta start up again. My brain is starting to solidify as I age though so I’m thinking my body can follow suit in this new and unprecedented time.

Thanks bro. I’ve made life altering changes imo and I’m proud of it. I am 170lbs now, down from the 197 I was in March/April.

I turned 9:45 min km into 5:30km in 4 months, I’ve made strength gains at the same time while drastically improving my body composition. There’s a lot to be excited about. My diet was always a challenge as the Mrs and I very much enjoy eating different things together and I have been able to get that under control in a sustainable way without any fad diets or restricting food groups. I’m set for long term success, I did all of this while quitting smoking at the same time. I had quit for years and stupidly took it back up during the pandemic. Normally I gain 10-15lbs when I attempt to quit and I said to myself I’ve already gained those lbs and can’t afford another 15 as I have nowhere to put it. So even though I lost 27lbs I count it as 40lbs Lolol.

That’s awesome man. I gotta check how fast I can run a km and see where I stand. Is that pace like an average of how fast you’re running a km or how fast you could run a singular km?

I gotta quit smoking too man, cigs that is. The greenery is doing wonders for my mental health these days, which is crazy cause I’ve had definitely experienced heightened anxiety from it in the past so it’s not a recommendation to anyone.

I gotta gain weight though I look like a friggin zombie. But I think it’s achievable I mean a lot of people wouldn’t have a problem putting on weight so I just gotta hang around them more.

I can do 5-10km at that pace. I did 5km at that pace more than a few times and I did 10km under 6 at like 5:45, but my first 2km were like warmup km that were in the 630 range and that sort of throws off my overall time. I get faster as the kms roll on so imo that is a good thing and shows that my endurance/cardio is improved and it’s not just effort getting me over the finish line faster. Years ago I used to start out faster and fade at the end. The heart rate training has made a world of difference.

I like a few puffs of the greenery once in awhile. I do find certain strains increase my anxiety as well. I found a strain from med relief that I can smoke without those nasty feelings.

You can do it bro, quitting is more a will-power/desire thing imo. You have to want it for yourself and nobody else. When you’re ready, you’re ready. I remove every habit I associate with it for a duration of time until I feel over the hump. Coffee, booze etc.

This is awesome stuff man. I am hoping I can figure out these ankle problems before it gets too cold to run outside. It's been almost a month now since I do any cardio and it still hurts to even just walk. I'm getting really nervous I tore my achillies in both f***ing ankles.

I'm very doubtful you tore your achilles for a month and kept walking on them. Even if a partial tear, if you keep walking on them, likely leads to full tear and at that point....you ain't walking no more.
Probably a sprain...those are buggers and take long to go away.

5-10km? Jheeez. You try and maintain a certain heart rate while running? I was doing that for a minute, but I was working back breaking labour so I fell off the gym wagon because my body was being destroyed. Thankfully I got a promotion so maybe I’ll be back in the gym sooner than later.

And yeah you’re right. It’s completely habitual. The good thing is a lot of people around me are dropping their bad habits like bosses, so I’m motivated being around them. You feel like such a bum smoking a cigarette in front of a man who hasn’t touched one in weeks.

Ankle injuries are a pita. I've never had one until a few years ago when I did something extremely stupid and twisted my right one pretty badly. It swelled up to the size of a grapefruit and had to it some nice shades of purple, blue, green and yellow. It hasn't fully healed yet, perhaps it never will. Sprinting and kicking the soccer ball tires my achilles out; it doesn't feel as elastic as the left one, but I'd say it's just a slight inconvenience at this point.

In my case, what helped me recover the most was rest. The pandemic in this regard was an absolute godsend and gets all the credit for this, as I'm the type of stubborn who will actually exercise more when injured out of spite. I think it's also important to exercise the achilles as much as possible but without shocking it with power strides, loose ankle movements like kicking while swimming, or anything that'll cause sudden sharp pain. What also seemed to work for me was my work in the bush, which required me to walk and keep my balance on uneven surfaces while carrying some weight. Got noticeably better from that, felt like free physio lol

From what you're describing, though, it doesn't sound like a tear. Maybe a sprain, but that usually gets better over the course of a few weeks. Since you still have pain even walking my very non-professional guess would be that it's an overuse injury, which caused inflammation and now chronic pain. Even though most of the time doctors are a waste of time when it comes to things like this, it's still not a bad idea to go see one just in case.

As someone who has suffered a torn achilles tendon...you would know if that was the case. You can't walk on them as there is zero stability on your foot. I was on crutches for 4 weeks and in a walking cast for another 4. Sounds like you may have achilles tendonitis. If it doesn't go away after a few months with rest you might want to get it looked at - you could have developed bone spurs that irritate the tendon and may require surgery.

180-age is my heartbeat. I’m 43. I keep my heart rate around 137. I did this religiously for the first 10-12 weeks. The last 4-6 weeks I’ve let it get into the 140’s without caring much, but I don’t do 170-180’s. That’s where I used to be when I was out of shape. I battled injury after injury and struggled to get through the day. At this heart rate I can literally run forever.

Truthfully I don't actually think I tore them. I was saying that because it's a very common injury in flag football weekend warriors. It was a huge eye opener for me playing flag because I just had not realized how much I have slowed down since I last played competitive sports.

I played hockey till I was 30 but stopped after that. Thought I was still in good shape because I'm strong and can run a long distance. But f*** me, playing flag at 37 years old I was schooled badly by early 20s guys, some of who were so fast I literally could not believe it. I had to go 100% every shift, it killed me. I have not sprinted like that in many many years.

I very stupidly played through pain and ran on my busted ankles even though it hurt a lot. After a few shifts it was just burning numbness so I kept going. In retrospect this was incredibly stupid of me but I couldn't admit to myself that I overdid it. I have a toddler and another kid on the way, I can't afford to be laid up with injury and all this f***ing advil I take just to function isn't good for me.

This is a long shot but does anyone have any experience with osteitis pubis? Especially as a goalie?

Been dealing with this injury for past 3 years which has kept me off the ice for that same time period unfortunately. Determined to get back to 200% - where there's a will there's a way.

Would love to hear any experiences or comeback stories from any lurkers here!

Awesome!!
Weight loss is a bitch!!

Im on a serious mission myself.
Last October I was 470lbs (my highest) (I am 6'2")
In May/June of this year I was at 451lbs and I decided thats it, Im still in my 30s, time to give myself a chance at life.
I cut out all alcohol, soda, bread and any junk food. Hit the gym hard and 3 months later with a lot of hard work, I'm down to 368lbs. Still a long way to go and it's only going to get harder for me because it's always easy at the beginning but I am determined.

And here I am concerned about weighing 152.x lbs instead of 150, even though it's probably muscle lol. That amount of weight loss in such a short period of time is pretty impressive. Have you noticed any positive changes besides the weight itself?

15km run yesterday at a good clip. I tried it again this morning and turned around at 4km. My legs feeling it a bit. She’s quite a bit cooler in the morning which I like, but I need a better warmup. Starting from nothing is killing my times, but I keep doing it haha. Running at night is almost easier because legs are warmed up from daily activities. This using the first couple k as my warmup is stupid Lolol. I’ll say I’m going to change it, but I probably won’t.

Fantastic news! Your post suggests you've tried before and rebounded. The key to maintaining health is turning it into a lifestyle, not a diet. After awhile your taste adjusts to better foods and junk becomes less appealing. No extremes, no starving. Having a cheat snack every now and then won't kill you; you just won't have three of them, and you won't have it every day.

Are you working with a nutritionist? Are you 'accountable' to someone? That's important. Keep going and keep posting your progress!

I wonder how many of you guys with chronic pain made your injuries worse by not resting/recovering. I'm no expert, but I'm still running pain-free as I approach 60. The key for me has been not pushing through injury. It drives me nuts to NOT run, but I'll take a week or two off and let whatever hurts heal.

I stopped running for three weeks in August – my longest break ever – after having my first hip flexor issue. After some rest and a lot of stretches, I started running again 9 days ago and am almost back to normal. Still haven't run more than 4K, but my pace is good (5:06/K on a treadmill, 5:20 on the road).

I’ve been going strong and I actually find cheat days to be very important to get over the hump. I’ve been consuming around 1700 calories now for months and not accounting for the calories I burn from running. Some days I’m negative calories and my weight loss will plateau for a bit and then I’ll eat pizza or something high calorie on Saturday and it seems to help me get over the plateau. 197 down to 168. Been about 5 months and 30 lbs.

If I was stricter and didn’t have cheat days I might be further along, but I think it’s more likely I’d have quit altogether. The important part is to return to normal, healthy eating once it’s over and don’t eat so much on your cheat day to wipe away a weeks progress. I think it’s working for me, maybe I need to keep telling myself that so I have a reason to stick with it, but yeah, takeout and deep fried foods sort of taste gross now with all this healthy eating.

That’s amazing. It depends on the injury for me, some muscle soreness I will fight through it. If my knees, back or joints hurt, I will shut it down for a bit. I haven’t really needed to this time, I think my gradual pace and slow, but steady approach is keeping me injury free, that and it’s the first time I’ve bought top quality shoes.

30lbs in 5 months is pretty awesome. Sounds like you've figured out the perfect formula for yourself.
