Story of my running life, got better at listening to my body but still waay too impatient. Found Cycling to be a great way to cross train while recovering. Speaking of which just had a slip on my bike yesterday and bruised (hopefully not broken) a knee pretty good. Looks like there will be no cycling or running for a few days at least.
I hate cycling but have no choice at this point. Both my achilles hurt all the time now, even just walking or going down stairs. Football was really fun but I f***ed something up bad.

Biking around is super fun I find. Sucks that UDEM is on such a steep hill cause Id go to Uni with my bike too, instead of going through the metro BS.

Dropped my recycling bin on the back of my foot last night… knew I should have stayed on the couch.

Ice , k tape and a 2 day rest will be in order for the tendon, 1 month away from Harricana 80k

Is it recurrent? Have you had it assessed? After a few years of running I irritated my Achilles tendons a few times and eventually became recurrent. Had to throw the kitchen sink approach to get it sorted with proper footwear, orthotics, stretching and improving running style (still somehow of a heel striker).

Also a sports med specialist prescribed Nitro patches to help with blood flow in injured Achilles tendons area which have notoriously poor blood circulation. Not a silver bullet but I believe it was part of the solution.

Climbing and descending is the most fun part of cycling for me. But I'm also a lightweight. :)

I tried the Coopers test this morning? First time in 20 years trying this. 1.5 miles or 2.4km run. I came in at 11:33. Not exactly fast imo because once again I did no warmup and my first km was slow at 5:30 which set me back a bit and forced me to make up ground. Shitty part is that my app device slowed me down I think. I got my km splits and I was like damn I’m not used to going this fast and I think it tricked me into slowing down. I left lots on the table too because I jogged the 2.4km back when I was done. I think with a warmup, sub 11 is easily within reach. That will subtract 30 seconds from my time alone. Having done it once I now know what to expect and there won’t be any left on the table next time.

I think the military might be the only place that runs this test, but I like having goals, so sub 10 is my goal now. Dunno how long it will take, but I will get there for sure.

I’m 43, chart I found says I’m roughly in the 80 percentile for my range. I think that’s bullshit, I don’t know many in their 40’s doing this.

Ya well you try to go from Sud ouest to UDeM and not be a disgusting pile of sweat for a 3 hour class on geophysics 😂

Thanks for the suggestions. It's the first time I have this kind of pain. I normally do just regular slow state cardio but this summer joined a flag football team, and the constant sprints were really tough (I was playing rusher). I ended up hurting my right achilles after a game, it sort of got better after a week but I kept re-injuring it every game I'd play. Stupidly would finish the game even though I was hurting bad. Eventually the other ankle started up too. Now they both just hurt all the time, just from walking, going up/down stairs, etc... I don't think it ruptured, because I can stand on my tip-toes (it does hurt, though). I can't run, at all. I can't even run to catch a bus. It hurts that much.

Used to do weightlifting as a hobby back in my university days, and I even got some pretty good results, but then life happened.

I stopped training after graduating. I had no more time for it.

Nor did I have time for much of anything aside from work if I'm honest. It kept on for years, more than a decade, before it got better and I didn't need to work as much. I got worn down but kept at it.

Through it all I managed to keep a semblance of social/romantic life going and watched more than my fair share of Hockey, but physical training? Everything but the bare minimum got thrown out the window.

Until recently that is, with me on the cusp of semi-retiring.

Long story short, I thought I'd managed to keep myself in relatively good shape through the years by eating semi-healthy, lifting weights in my home gym, some jogging, and all. But that first training session with the trainer trying to slowly get back to that weightlifting form was a (very) rude awakening, to say nothing of the muscle pain I felt the day after.

Neverthless, I will keep at it and sooner rather than later I will go back to being a "buff boi".

80th percentile for guys in their 40s sounds right to me man. Your doing better than 80% of guys your age, but there’s still lots of room for improvement on that pace.
Sub 10 is absolutely an attainable goal, and great to strive for.

Nope, I had never heard of it prior to your post. You have me intrigued about it now though so I plan on trying it.
I have pushed myself hard for 2km runs and can get that in 9:30 or so. So a sub 10 run at 2.4 is a goal I would be striving for also.
I didn’t mean to imply it’s easy, I just meant it’s obviously attainable with the level of commitment you have and your training.
I will give it a shot and let you know how it goes.
I have my half marathon this Sunday, so I definitely won’t be doing a hard run like that this week haha

*edit* what app do you use for tracking your runs? I started out using Runkeeper, but recently purchased a Garmin watch. Thinking about signing up on Strava.

Most ppl I know are using Strava, I haven’t made the switch. I have always used map my run.

Yeah sub 10 is attainable I think. I mean I wasn’t that far off, but at this level shaving 20
Seconds a km is tough when you’re sub 5 minute pace. I had 1.4 km out of my 2.4 that would have put me in the 9:30 range. My first km killed me at 5:21 , but after that it got better. I will be doing a solid warmup next time so that 1st km doesn’t hold me back. One step at a time.

Really makes you appreciate how impressive it is for somebody to qualify for the Boston Marathon. For your age group you’d have to run 42.2km at a 4:30/km pace. And yet, so many runners qualify each year that just meeting those standards isn’t enough, you would have to shave a handful of minutes off your overall time to be one of the 30,000/year who qualify. It’s truly amazing.

Yeah once there is an injury and we push through we tend to compensate by reducing load on injured area and putting more on others screwing biomechanics and causing other problems.

Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate....

Here comes the diet. In day 2..
I'm going vegan-friendly with mostly animal products. Eggs..Dairy..Meat-Meat-Meat...veggies and fruits...some limited grain/starch in rice/lentils/chickpeas/potatoes..My only ''bad'' snack is popcorn.

I gotta up my protein...found myself just eating smaller meals so I end my days with a low satiety rate.

That was a sarcastic comment lol...pretty much doing the opposite of meat with a heavy focus on animal products.
Also feels like that big veganism wave the world went through has taken a big back seat.

Not sure if that popcorn bag is super healthy, don't think it has much nutrition value but it's low caloric, which is perfect for a late night snack.

It shouldnt have as the planet aint getting any better.

Ive done 6 months completely vegetarian because Im just not willing to give up my free-run eggs that my sister picks from her hens but aside from that I lived pretty well. Of course, I can cook better than most mere-mortal so its a plus.

My GF stopped this right away though, Ive been eating beef tartare almost once a week lmao.

I don't doubt people being able to enjoy any diet really..Just that there isn't some pro-vegan documentary coming out every month with advocacy groups going on strike in front of butchers/restaurants.
They might have finally realize this wasn't helping their cause.

I don't buy factory farming meat..get it straight from farms.

Not into vegan diets, I like ie fruits and veggies, but I need my meat. I can’t see it ever changing.

Ran my first Half Marathon this past Sunday. It went very well and I felt great from start to finish (minus 3 miles of rolling hills which wasn’t a whole lot of fun)
Overall very pleased with my time 1:49:44
At 26.1km this means I averaged 5:12/km

Now it’s onto full marathon training. Likely won’t be able to achieve this goal until early next summer, so I have plenty of time to train. Thinking about doing 1 more Half marathon before it gets too cold.

We will see about that. I don’t plan on changing.

That’s a great time for a half. Wowsers, hoping I can get there one day.
