Anyone exercising? Any updates?

Yeah. I've been teaching my kid to skate and play hockey. We're going skiing soon too. Doubled the size of my home gym, doing squats/deadlifts/bench press in my power rack, but going light as powerlifting f***s me up too much to work 50+ hours a week. I've transitioned to a mostly plant based diet as well.

I wanted to spend 100 euros per month on groceries, subject to getting 2500 calories and 60 grams of protein per day. So far the challenge is having enough variety of foods that I actually want to eat that fit the price point.

...why?

Sounds legit brodie, how old is your kid if you don’t mind me asking? Might be able to pencil him in on the Habs roster the way things are going these days.

I gotta get back into skating for real. But something about doing lower body cardio does nothing for me. I have endurance to keep going but definitely need to start bringing some weights with me and using that centrifugal force to get a pump in the upper body.

5 years old. I guess he'd have more heart than the Habs. Hes was asking me for skates almost every other day for a few months before I bought him some Bauers and now it's sometimes a fight to get him off the rink.

Personally, hockey and skating were my go to sports before covid hit. Restrictions made short work of that though lol.

Edit: also bought this beauty last summer.

I gained about 7lbs over Christmas but happy to report I just shedded the last of it on Thursday. Working on getting in better shape now and maybe slice a few more pounds and get stronger.

You usually a night time work out dude?

Sweet bike bruh, I miss biking. I just use the rental bikes here by Lakeshore, I think they’re called Bixi in Montreal. They’re pretty sturdy, but something about your own bike makes riding seem so much more enjoyable.

And yeah man, kids friggin love skating. It makes sense cause it so fun and they don’t have enough weight on them to seriously hurt themselves. I taught myself in my early 20s and thankfully I’m a lightweight fella so I picked it up pretty nicely, but it’s easily one of the funnest forms of exercise. Nothing compares to outdoor skating in the winter time.

For some reason I’m a terrible roller blader which I was not expecting. Although the only one time I went I was pretty high off weed and fell on my ass immediately which made the whole experience awful lmao.

Nice man, good to see you shed that shit. Now that the momentum is going it’s your time to strike! Cobra Kai, NO MERCY type beat.

How’d you lose the weight? Diet or exercise or both?

I drastically cut back my carbs. I haven’t gone keto, though I am considering it. Outside of my physical appearance, internally, I am a bit of a mess; high blood pressure and a fatty liver. I’ve cut back on my carbs and am eating a lot more salad. I still eat cooked veggies but trying my best to avoid anything too high in sugar. I’ve removed snacking, especially junk. I am also intermittent fasting on an 18:6 schedule. THAT was rough because I am a toast/bagel person in the morning and it was hard to kick that.

That said, it’s not just the diet for me. I ride my spin bike 4-5 days a week, typically do a 20 minute HIIT. As I’ve only been at this for 2.5 weeks, I’ll do longer HIITs when I get more fit. I am also doing weight training 6 days a week and other resistance exercises. Abs are every day. I have bought a kettlebell, a couple dumbbells, incline bench and a pull-up bar. I can’t even do one pull-up yet which was really humbling. I don’t work out long, maybe only 40 minutes, but we work hard.

What’s really helped is my son is also training with me (not the same diet though). This helps with motivating each other and we’re getting good bonding time.

Eh man that sounds like a great start, and anytime I hear about a father and son bonding that shit warms my heart.

I’d recommend trying a keto breakfast and keto late dinner. I’ve been on it and I feel amazing, but I still get carbs the rest of the day to keep everything going.

Also on the pull ups, try and strengthen your grip/forearm to begin with. Don’t even have to be able to do a pull up, but get your fingers and hands really aware of the exercise you’re trying to do and try to pull yourself up focusing on that area. Over time it will feel easier to pull yourself up because you won’t try and escape any of the pressure it gives your hands. Worth a try.

I’m on day 2 of pull-ups today. Was able to do 4, with difficulty two days ago. Today I’ve done a set of 6 at least 5 times. I’m gonna go do another one now because might as well.

Every year I like to set a little goal for myself. 2020 it was to get into shape (got to sub 10% bodyfat). 2021 it was to learn Finnish, and I got my B2 certificate. This year it's to save a lot of money. By far my most wasteful expenditure is on food and alcohol. After doing this for a couple weeks, it's crazy just how wasteful it is. A single takeout could cost 5 days worth of meals.

Take out is the biggest waste of money for real. If you can eat healthy and not eat out (from restaurants that is :naughty:) then more power to you. I don’t think I could go under $10/day, which when converted into Euros is 210. 100 a month is your goal though right? Dang that is intense.

I was pretty close to being back to where I was but now the gyms are closed again ffs
Yeah, shit is mad annoying. They gotta open up ASAP, these politicians tryna get everyone to be out of shape like they are.

Yep. It's quite challenging, and I'll be over budget this month, but I'm starting to get the hang of it. I've got a couple really good recipes, and that'll give me time to find a couple more really good recipes.

The big savings are already in though. I'm over budget because sometimes I spend 2 euros for a meal instead of 1.11. But I'm also not spending 10.20 for lunch, and then 17 euros for a takeaway.

That’s insane. Yeah I was definitely starving myself when I was eating out just because I could only really afford one meal a day. And it was utter shite nutrient wise compared to what I get when I prepare my whole meal.

Jeez though in an entire year you’re gonna have saved bank. Can I interest you in some charity organizations you might be interested in donating to? Jk.

Anyone else here made the jump to a plant based diet ? I don't know how long it'll last, but I've never enjoyed food as much as I do. Costs are way down too because I'm basically not buying processed food anymore. I've always been a big meat eater and never thought this would ever be possible..

Makes sense if you're spending that much. I was just wondering why so low. At those numbers, you could spend more without it having any real significant impact on your finances compared to the enjoyment of better food. Depends what you mean as well by a lot of money, a lot of it relates to your income. On 50-80k, saving 2-3K more is significant. At 500k a year, not at all and not worth the hassle.

Why so low is just for my personality. When I do something, I have to do it all the way.

As an interesting aside, how I got started thinking about this was because of the inflation numbers. I was doing some digging, and in the U.S. at least, the inflation number means something quite different than elsewhere in the world. They changed from the Laspeyres method in the 90's. Whereas in many countries inflation is the derivative of CPI, in the U.S. it's more like ''inflation is the general price increase that you cannot avoid.'' They assume that consumers make substitutions to similar products in order to avoid price increases. So I started thinking about how far I could take that idea. Maybe I could even experience deflation!

As for your first question, a lot of the savings are in switching to a more plant based diet, and buying bulk. Buying dried chickpeas is about 6 times cheaper by weight than buying canned chickpeas, and way cheaper than meat. The difficult part is preparing 1kg of chickpeas such that you want to eat them lol.

Up to 4 sets of 12 pull ups. Starting to look differently posture wise, but could be doing better diet wise and mentally in general. Gyms are back open in Ontario so my goal is to get in there tomorrow morning and hit the outdoor rink for a little skate. Gotta keep pushing hard to turn the page on this chapter, it’s been so isolating and self reflective, I’d like more from life.

Inshallah.

Up to 8 pull ups from 4 last week. And the subsequent sets are much easier as well.

I don't know what I am doing wrong, I can't do pull ups for shit. I can hit some pretty high numbers for most lifts but pull ups just don't work for me. It's like my brain doesn't know how to get those muscles to work together.

Great to hear! Once you wrap your head around it, it truly is such a beneficial way to eat for a multitude of reasons. So many people think it’s more expensive just because you have to pay extra to sub the beyond burger at restaurants, but when cooking at home subbing beans in for your main protein source is just an incredibly economical swap.

Yeah I thought so too. I admitted to my friend I could only do like 2-3 and the guy gave me the biggest side eye in the world lmao.

You can do a lat pull down more than your body weight? Cause if you can it’s definitely form related, you’re probably used to generating power from your legs, where a pull up is all core.

Up to 7 x 12 for the day, gonna call it quits before I overdo it and end up out of commission for too long of a period. Such an important lesson to not kill yourself working out, god damn had to learn the hard way.

Gyms reopened for me today for the first time in 6 weeks. Was great to be back at it even if I was just doing light work.

Kinda feel like I’m going to give up on strength training though. It’s just impossible to maintain strength numbers with gyms shutting down constantly. If it happens again, I might just go ahead and buy my own rack and weights. For now though I’m just gonna focus on general physique more than strength. It’s what I was doing for most of my adult life anyway.

Yeah a guy I work with said the same thing to me about not being able to maintain strength numbers because of the constant closing down of the gyms.

You’ll be good incorporating whatever you’ve learned from strength training and using it more lightly anyways. Your underlying health is a lot more important than superficial gains anyways.

I told my physio and she tried to get me to fix my form but I still can't figure it out. I am convinced I have problems with my brain engaging certain muscles
