Montral are not doing a rebuild its just not happening .
Smart owner/management would trade off all UFA and try to trade any player over the age of 25 for fair assets in return.
But than again this is Molson and M.B. who have proven to be not very smart .

Gallagher, Chiarot, and Weber (LTIR).

For

Yamamoto, Koekkoek (contract dump),Samorukov, and a 1st.

Oilers upgrade 2nd line and defence, Habs replace Gallagher with a younger version of himself, get a potential stud in Samorukov, and a first.
Won't work with the cap.

Ownership ,Management haven't mentioned they are doing a rebuild the media and fans can talk about it all they like its holds no value .

Only ownership ,management will decide if their doing a rebuild and there's no evidence saying they are going to.
And Ownership ,Management haven't mentioned they weren't. We will know soon enough.

Who are those 6-7 core guys under 25? Suzuki, Romanow, Caufield, Poehling, Pazetta and Norlinder? Seems optimistic to call them all core pieces.
i'd personally keep a few others , dvorak, anderson, edmundson and evans. we could really only move toffoli ,savard and hoffman if they were hoping to leave to a contender. it's been hard enough getting free agents to come as it is , we don't wanna burn that bridge . primeau and guhle look promising. add a couple top five picks to that mix and our future will improve quickly.

Those involved in the league have respect for Molson , Bergevin it's those opinions that matter to them not the opinions of fans.

year 1 - chariot , kulak
year 2 - drouin , byron
year 3 - gallagher, petry
settling the weber / nashville situation will also contribute

Until they do say they are doing a rebuild or retool have any interest in going down that path it holds no value .
Fans can want a rebuild/retool all they like it's not their team ownership , management make the decisions .

Suzuki, Romanov, Caufield and Poehling are the Habs' young core currently on the roster who should remain here, but if they go full rebuild they definitely need a Wright/Bedard/Michkov to really get things going. This young core simply isn't good enough and needs a true elite talent gem. They have decent depth but need a game breaker.

The Habs' strength lies within it's young defenders, with Norlinder, Guhle, Harris being almost NHL-ready already and being young with solid potential, soon being added to the roster with Romanov. Add Mailloux as a big time wildcard and you should have a decent D-corps on the long term for sure.

It's the top-6 up front that needs an upgrade.

How much does today's news change things? Was Gorton successful in pitching the idea of a proper re-build? Would that mean retention and draft picks/prospects?

You get a player!
You get a player!
Everybody get a player!

(But Suzuki. Suzuki is staying right where he is. Caufield, Guhle and Romanov too. Everybody else is for sell. You want to push for the Cup? How about Toffoli for a low price of a 1st+?)

Bergevin NOW has no say in the situation.
Neither do Habs fans and Bergevin is still being paid by Montreal and will probably be hired as general manager of another NHL team before next season .
