It is truly questionable that goalies like Koskinen or Campbell play smaller. The same things I see from Campbell are similar to Koskinen, especially the one where they immediately get down on their kneepads to make themselves smaller and get a weak goal shot in the net as a result.

I don't get how anybody can personally defend Dustin Schwartz at this stage.

I've been on the fire Schwartz bandwagon for a long time, but I will say in his defense he is not an objectively bad goalie coach, in that he has 3 former pupils in Brossoit, Jarry, and Hart playing in the NHL, obviously he did something right in their development stages, it's hard to think that roughly 5% of the goalies in the league are former students through sheer dumb luck.

That said being a good developmental coach or a good junior coach does not make you a good NHL coach and clearly at this level he is not getting enough out of the goalies he has coached and has had trouble getting guys back on track after they've gone off the rails.

It's really hard to gauge his value, he's done some good but we'll never really know until we get another goalie coach. Maybe put Mike Smith to use, I mean a goalie who can move a puck is valuable.

I think when you have much more talented players in junior who are nhl calibre they excel there. It is once you get out up against guys who have harder more accurate shots as well as are in lanes more that technique breakdowns are very apparent.

Not to say he is for a bad junior coach but he clearly causes regression in how players perform at the nhl level for every goalie he has ever touched

Why is Skinner the only goalie that worked out? Or is he so good he’d be a vezna lock on any other team?

That is totally to be determined, skinner has been no great shakes either, something like 10 of his last 18 games being under .900 save %.

It really is not just schwatz bu the state of goaltnding and how it is coached acros the league in the minors and even lower levels is a tragedy.

Go down on your knee the moment the puck croses the blueline and stay there, always stay deep in the net, try and make saves by shoulder shrugging. Just be big and take up space. Players have figured this style out and yet we still just pump out cookie cutter goalies and tell them all to play the same way.

There are very very few really good golaies out there anymore at least not for more than a hit year or so.

The guy need to poach and bring in is Ian Clark from Vancouver. He's done wonders with the Canucks goalies over the years.
There was a brief moment when they fired Green that Clark was without a contract and possibly could have been poached but they signed him again so our chance has probably passed. Sean Burke is another guy who was floating around but got scooped up by Vegas last year.

Russia has been churning out great goaltenders for years, I wonder if there is someone from that program we could convince to come over and oversee our goaltending.

If we’re looking to specifically address Campbell’s situation, might be best to bring in Campbell’s guy for a while to work directly with him.
JC trained with the guy, usually when things were problematic, back in Toronto.
He has confidence in him and might be an easier move than personnel changes ( Skinner may be benefiting from Schwartz).

Dustin Schwartz was only hired because he was in their own backyard coaching for a league that's well below the NHL.

It's nepotism and no amount of posturing will make it look anything better than that. Since 2006 there was exactly one year where I'd say the Oilers had good goaltending and that was 2016-17.
Yup, other then roloson playoff run he was below average. He'll we haven't had solid goaltending since possibly Salo, and even that could be debatable.....

I havent read the entire thread. But I dont think we can blame Schwartz for Campbells downfall. Campbell has been struggling since Day 1. I dont think Schwartz has even worked with him long enough to blame him. Campbell just hasnt been good this year. Its that simple.

It's his job. What else does he do if not working with goalies full time?
Even if he did nothing with Campbell we need someone to actually work and help him. An experienced goalie coach knowing what it's like to hit bottom. How to get out of a funk. Knowing Campbell's weaknesses.

I dont necessarily disagree. While I dont think we can blame Schwartz for Campbell's downfall. At the same time, if he cant really do anything to help his game, then maybe we need to hire someone else who can. The team has made a big commitment to Campbell.

If the team is really set on keeping Schwartz (for whatever reason), then hire someone else who can work with the goaltenders as well.

With Schwartz, I do wonder what his actual job is. Is it his job to just work with the goaltenders we have?

Is scouting the other teams goalie and providing feedback on how to beat them, part of his job? I have had rumours that this is the case but I dont know if its true. I think if it is true, then I would say on this level he has done a good job.

The team makes a lot of money. No reason we cant hire more personnel to better support the players and organization. Better scouts (amateur+professional), analytics department, support staff etc.

regardless of what you think of Schwartz it's pretty incredible that he's still here. How many coaches has he outlasted? 4? 5?

I think this statement needs to be qualified in that those three goalies are now under the guidance of those teams’ individual goalie coaches. Not Schwartz anymore.

My vote honestly goes to Mike Smith. Actual NHL pedigree. Knows the issues with what we have been doing. Can teach puck handling skills. And has a different style that does not require goalies to be on their knees all the time like the village slut.

Every goalie that has come under this guy's tutelage has sucked big time.

Fire him.
There’s a pretty good track record at this point to get rid of him.

Bring Rodrigue in and see what he can do with Campbell. He’s brought skinner along the last few years so Stu is probably more comfortable with him.

They should get Dary to open up the wallet and go goalie coach shopping in Russia. They’ve been churning out goalies the last decade. Somebody’s gotta be coaching them.

I thought this thread would get active again.

Correct me if I'm wrong but one of the most common issues with all our goalies has been letting in the first goal and in so many cases the first shot.

Smith
Kostco
Talbot
Dubnyk
And now Skinner and Campel

All notorious for letting in the first shot.

That's f***ing coaching.

Scwartz's claim to fame is supposed to be the head trajectory stuff. Campbell so badly needs to improve tracking the play. Dude is constantly just chilling out behind screens praying crap hits him. Don't expect any fixes without a summer of work. Put the power of the Schwartz to the test!

So Kevin Woodley made some good points today on Gregors show about how the oilers are good at picking apart other teams goalies they did it with markstrom they did it with korpisalo do any Dustin haters have a response to this?
