Show me a no1 pick and i'll show you a Filip Mesar future all-star, MVP, Conn's Smyth, Stanley Cup Winner, Alternate Captain, Captain, Slayer of Demons, First of His Name, Protector of the Realm, Breaker of Chains, King of All Seven kingdoms.

I'm so thrilled he's going to make the AHL at 18 years old!!! He'll be the no1 Center and will be called up in the NHL for a few games or maybe even for a third of a season hopefully.

I'v never been this pumped since Subban.

Boys we finally have in our hands a true no1 C, sure not a McDavid but this guy is going to be top 15 in points year after year.

This is my prediction and expectations of him on avg per year: 25 goals, 70 Assists, 95 points

Lets GOOOOO
Yikes

After today's preseason game for Laval, JF Houle said he was impressed with Mesar, but it is tight in Laval and he's not sure there will be room for him.

It could hint that Mesar could be sent to Kitchener.

Hard to find room for him? That means that he thinks there are 9 forwards better than him? Right. Veteran shit thinking again.

Please send him to the OHL and let him play in the NHL next year. No AHL under a JF Houle. That's best for his development.

Or it simply means they have too many forward?
On NHL contracts: Ylonen, Mysak, RHP, Schnarr, Teasdale, Belzile, Richard, Stephens, Condotta + possibly Slafkovsky and Pezzetta.
On ahl contracts: Simoneau, Stapley, Martel, Gignac, Bourque, Abbandonato, etc.

He's already better at 18 years old than most of these players. Most of these players will never have an NHL career. Also he would get a lot of money if he went back to Europe, so what is the incentive for him to stay in America? AHL.

Send him to Kitchener for the year. Have him get used to playing on NHL size ice. I have read so many times that it is not good for his development if he dominates the OHL. Last year he only had 16 points in 37 games so it is not like he was dominant in his draft year. If he goes to Laval he will be competing with players a lot older than him for ice time. I can’t see him dominating the AHL yet this year.

Kitchener did a great job developing Xhekaj last year before trading him at the deadline. Let them work with Mesar too.

No. He would benefit more if he was sent back to Europe than play against kids in the OHL. Like they did with Koivu.

Houle is not a HuGo appointee and despite what he says, the final decision on where Mesar plays won’t be his.

Hughes will be looking at what’s best for the player’s development and not which average AHL forward ought to be preferred to one of the org’s valued prospects.

Houle appears to be more concerned with rostering a winning lineup rather than not losing sight that his mandate is to develop first and foremost and then to win.

Evidently, instilling a winning culture is important but when it comes to high upside first round picks in particular, like Mesar, you don’t just lump him together with several other forwards competing for spots when many of them are just AHL fodder.

The caveats of course are how the question was asked and more specifically, what was Houle responding to. Context is not always decipherable from the one-liner that is attributed to the individual being quoted.

He was like that last season. I expect this season to be a lost year for the prospects sent down. I don't think the Lions do much development either.

The only saving grace is that MPP (and probably others from the development department) is at their preseason camp.

No. He would benefit more if he was sent back to Europe than play against kids in the OHL. Like they did with Koivu.
Didn’t Koivu have to serve military requirements and that why he stayed in Finland (also he was getting 1st line minute) Isn’t the OHL the league that generate the most NHLer, Beck is playing in the OHL and he did just has good has Mesar. Mesar need to be adjusting to NA, (physical play, ice size and language) and most importantly getting top line minute + PP if he going to the AHL, SHL or liiga playing top 6 in a offensive role and he is getting PP that is great, if he is playing on a 3rd line than it a lot better to be dominant in the OHL, a lot of these euro team are playing not to get relegated or trying to move up the development of our player isn’t something they worry about the coach won’t sent him on the ice if the game is on the line vs. the OHL where the coach is going to send him on the ice every time he is able to regardless of the situation, the AHL is even more physical than the NHL so I’m not sure it is the ideal place to adjust. he isn’t playing beer league, the OHL is going to be significant competition for a 18yo that need to adjust to NA.

You're right about all of this. The OHL was good enough for Marner, it's good enough for Mesar. Mesar will be able to focus on all kinds of things that he wasn't able to focus on when playing up in age.

When asked about Mesar, Hughes said he spoke with his agent yesterday. No final decision is made yet, but all signs point he will be sent to Kitchener.

Hughes said he'd rather have Mesar score 80 pts in the OHL than 40 pts in the AHL because they want him to work on his offensive game.

I think Hughes saw the latest comments from Houle (about Mysak) and realized the guy doesn't understand what the organization is trying to do with development.

Maybe Mesar and his agent but don’t agree 100%, that why they are still negotiating…

I have a feeling that Mesar's agent is not a very good advisor. For obvious reasons he is pushing to stay in AHL, but honestly OHL would be better for his long term career. Even Marian Hossa played one year in juniors after dominating Slovak league. Same goes to Ladislav Nagy and few others.
Transition to new country, language, rink size, game intensity is easier in juniors for 18y old kid. Plus, he will get more time to develop his play and decide whether he wants to play winger or center.

Scoring 40 pts in the AHL this year would be a really really great year for him and way better than scoring 80 in the OHL. His season would be a dissapointment if he scores under 100 in the OHL imo
