Galchenyuk wasn’t a European prospect.

Maybe that poster should have specified “truly developed a young European prospect in their system successfully” in which case that also cancels out Kotkaniemi
Galchenyuk was born in the U.S. but is 100% Russian as he was raised and trained in Russia where he lived with both of his Russian/Belarusian born parents until he was 15 when they moved to Chicago to play hockey away from the corruption of their homeland.

He still has an obvious Russian accent and family friend and fellow Russian Igor Larionov was his first agent until Alex went off the rails with his partying and fired him.

Galchenuk is an American as much as Owen Nolan is Irish

Lol as much as Nolan is Irish? Nolan left Ireland before his 1st birthday and he def wasn't drafted out of an Irish hockey league, Galchenyuk lived most of his first several years in NA, left and moved back at 15. He identified as an American, as he said many times and represented them and he was drafted out of NA. Clearly different. He also didn't spend all of his European childhood years in Russia, he spent plenty of time in Italy.

Sheesh

He grew up in Russia with both of his Russian parents with Russian as his primary language.......he is Russian in every way other than his birth certificate, end of discussion.

It'd be stupid to send him to the OHL so he can develop a year of bad habits. He's too good. Send him the AHL. This kid is absolute fire. He'll be the best player in the Laval by mid season.

I don't think it's stupid at all.

He hasn't had the opportunity to be -the guy- on a team since he was a young kid. Let him go to the OHL and play top PP, top PK, every situation, etc.

He could develop more of an inside game and he can do that more safely in the OHL than against the dirty pro defenseman in the AHL.

To each their own.

I don't care if he's "the guy." I care if he continues to grow his confidence and develop. I think him "going backwards" is not the way.

I think the physicality is so overblown. Just look to the playoffs last season where he produced while PPG players on his team disappeared including players who were "the guy" in the OHL.

He is Russian in every other way besides his birth certificate, where he played his junior hockey, and the team he played for on an international level. Alex Galchenyuk was not a European prospect, end of discussion.

His parents are Belarusian, not Russian.

In Belarus, they speak Russian and Belarusian…..if a Belarusian speaks Belarusian to a Russian the Russian will not understand what he’s saying.

Even in literature, some of the letters are different.

Think of Belarusians as Canadians and Russians as Americans.

As similar as they are, they are also different.

Would you say the same thing about a Chinese or Indian born immigrant who would have emigrated in Canada/US as a teenager in the same situation?

I feel like you're oversimplifying the complex issue that is sense of belonging and citizenship

Are the stories true about his agent or him telling Habs management that it's Laval or back to Slovakia? Saw that on SM yesterday.

I'm asking because I don't know - is playing in the AHL so dirty that it's more likely to result in injury than OHL? I'm just not really able to recall this being that much of a problem, but again I don't really know.
I tend to think that, in order to develop, a player needs to play in a league that's better than he is, but not so much better that he can't keep up and it either messes with his head or is just not condusive to his development. Playing in a league that is to easy is not a good idea either since it does not promote improvement and just dancing around guys that you are way better than doesn't really teach you much.
So with Mesar, he has looked pretty good in the preseason and he has played with men already. Will he get much out of OHL or can he hang well enough in the AHL that he should go there? I kind of lean to the AHL, but am glad I'm not the one making the decision.

I've been advocating Mesar in the AHL after seeing his progression in his last 2 games, but the one factor that worried me was JF Houle's usage of him. If he's not sure that he's going to use Mesar a lot and treat him in a traditional way ("you're behind our vets, kid"), then I'm 100% in the idea that he should go to the OHL.

I hate that traditional mentality, all the more when it's in the AHL where your priority is development. Send him to Kitchener and let's be done with those worries.

Considering that Norlinder got elbowed in the head with 3 seconds left in an AHL game. Yeah the AHL is more goony.

If we are concerned about injury, nobody should play hockey anywhere, IMO.

MESAR is currently the best play driving option at C for the Rocket. Despite the smaller frame, I don't see why he would be sent to the O.

I think he's also a safety net to help Slafkovsky's morale and provide some skill for the Big Boy to play with if he gets sent down to Laval at any point.

Show me a no1 pick and i'll show you a Filip Mesar future all-star, MVP, Conn's Smyth, Stanley Cup Winner, Alternate Captain, Captain, Slayer of Demons, First of His Name, Protector of the Realm, Breaker of Chains, King of All Seven kingdoms.

I'm so thrilled he's going to make the AHL at 18 years old!!! He'll be the no1 Center and will be called up in the NHL for a few games or maybe even for a third of a season hopefully.

I'v never been this pumped since Subban.

Boys we finally have in our hands a true no1 C, sure not a McDavid but this guy is going to be top 15 in points year after year.

This is my prediction and expectations of him on avg per year: 25 goals, 70 Assists, 95 points

Lets GOOOOO
