He was like that last season. I expect this season to be a lost year for the prospects sent down. I don't think the Lions do much development either.

The only saving grace is that MPP (and probably others from the development department) is at their preseason camp.
Was very disappointed that Hughes didn’t bring in a whole new coaching for Laval. Houle is a dinosaur and I question whether anyone improved under his watch last year.

I want nothing to do with leftovers from the Bozovin era

Everyone that got called up from the ahl last year looked good in the nhl. He must be doing something right when thats the case...

(Between the handling of) Sorry I was walking while writing this.

I wonder why Mesar needs to develop his offensive game against easier competition but not Slafkovsky.
I think there’s big difference when you are so physically advanced. Mesar is the size of a junior player. He can’t rely on his physical tools to dominate. Slaf needs to work at processing the game at a faster level, that will happen in the AHL/NHL

Like we don't need a 40pts F with Laval..

I mean if you look at the GP column plenty of guys on the roster were on pace for it. There's quite a few contracted guys in Laval this year compared with last too. If they do indeed want Mesar to play center instead of wing, Laval has even less space for icetime.

It could also just be PR and they don't think Mesar can handle the physicality of the AHL and want to give him a year to get bigger and more confident.

Ahl is one thing, but I disagree on the NHL. Things go so fast that if you cant process, youre forced to rely on your raw physical tools.

Also you mention physical tools, as in, Jurajs size, but fail to mention that Filip will be one of the faster, stronger and more skilled player in the OHL.

Who exactly? Schuneman that we put on waivers? Dauphin that we didn’t even bother keeping? Primeau who many are now questioning whether he will ever make it? Ylonen that I’d be surprised if he is still here by the end of the year?

Pezzetta, Poehling, Schueneman, Ylonen, RHP, etc. all looked good when they got called up.

For the same reason why Mesar got to play NHL pre-seasdon games and Tourigny did not.

Houle is not a HuGo appointee and despite what he says, the final decision on where Mesar plays won’t be his.

Hughes will be looking at what’s best for the player’s development and not which average AHL forward ought to be preferred to one of the org’s valued prospects.

Houle appears to be more concerned with rostering a winning lineup rather than not losing sight that his mandate is to develop first and foremost and then to win.

Evidently, instilling a winning culture is important but when it comes to high upside first round picks in particular, like Mesar, you don’t just lump him together with several other forwards competing for spots when many of them are just AHL fodder.

The caveats of course are how the question was asked and more specifically, what was Houle responding to. Context is not always decipherable from the one-liner that is attributed to the individual being quoted.
The final decision is not Hughes' either, in reality. It's the choice of Mesar... Hughes has made that pretty clear. Hughes has stated his desired path for Mesar, but if Mesar chooses to go back to Europe, Hughes will not stand in his way. He may suggest where in Europe Mesar should play, but that's about it.

And I wouldn't be worried about Houle wanting a winning lineup. Mesar would be one of his better chances at winning pretty quickly.

I personally hope he chooses Europe over the OHL as well. I also don't get the thinking of Hughes saying 80+ points in the OHL is better than 40 in the AHL. 40 points in the AHL is very, very good ... and I don't understand how that would be a detriment to his offensive game.

It also begs the question as to why Slafkovsky is in the NHL. Would 60 points in the AHL not be better than the 30 in the NHL they're probably expecting? PS. I don't really have an issue with Slafkovsky in the NHL either... he'll be better than many of our forwards by the end of the year easily.

They are very different. Size, experience...
Mesar spent his whole life living in parent's house playing for one team. He has two years of experience playing with men, but he had limited time in PP. I guess OHL is good for him to adjust to Canada, different ice size and get a lot o fminutes.

Better than many of our forwards by the end of the year? That may be a case of damning Slafkovsky with the faintest of praise. But I agree, keep Slafkovsky in the NHL as I have yet to see him being overwhelmed by the pace and speed of the NHL game.

Kent is right, he is better off develop his offensive ability right now and learn the pro game next year. Kid needs to dominate on an NA ice first.

He also needs to adapt to North American life + living away from family, etc

Which is the same reason I think Mesar should play in the AHL.
