And MLB and, to an increasing extent, the NBA. All other sports are mere distractions.

It depends in the state. I'm very familiar with Detroit and Michigan in general. Over there, you have your die hard Wings/Tigers/Pistons fans, but people generally will watch and talk about the Lions no matter what.

When it comes to the Wings/Tigers/Pistons, the most popular is simply who is most successful. The Pistons were HUGE from 2003-2006, but now very few people seem to care. The Wings are HUGE when its playoff time, but little attention is given when they're not on a crazy winning streak during the regular season. And everyone loves the Tigers in October, but little attention is given from April-September.

And that mentality very much applies to international hockey and soccer and other major olympic sports like track/swimming/speed skating. When they don't win, it's "who cares, we don't care about that anyways." When they do win, it's "OMG we're the best, look at us!"

The tripping call was correct just misnamed as crosschecking. I don't think I'd have called a penalty shot either (too chicken).

Is "accidental" skate on skate contact really a penalty in internation rules? Serious question, someone on twitter said it isn't and i can't prove it either way.

This. That penalty was earned by the US by their strong play; they took it to Canada in OT. To get robbed of the PP chance on a phantom even-up call is everything that is bad about hockey.

That's the story and you're sticking to it despite the facts that point elsewhere? Okaaaaay.....

Robbed, OMG, the US team was robbed (robbed, I tell you) of the gold medal........

There's a pretty good chance nobody is complaining about the penalties in overtime if the American goalie doesn't pass it to Team Canada player........just cover the puck, wow.

I don't know why so many people are saying the U.S. men should beat Canada. I have zero confidence in any meaningful game against Canada no matter how much better the American team looks. It's obvious God does not want the U.S. beating Canada in hockey.

I think most people would agree that the U.S. has caught up to Canada to the point that it's basically a toss up every time the teams meet now. But no matter how many times we flip the coin, it keeps landing on the Canadian side. :shakehead

This x 1000. 1996 was the last time we beat Canada in a meaningful game.

Well...when God flips the coin for hockey He does use a Lucky Loonie...

I don't think everyone in the US is like that. I'm not. It stinks when my team loses and it's great when they win and I don't rub it in peoples faces. Why be a poor winner or loser?

Congratulations, Canada. Epic comeback. You guys must have been jumping like crazy when they tied it.

It's not that. I find that any time the US isn't dominating a sport and they end up losing, the event/sport itself is kinda marginalized. But when they win, it's like "HA, SEE WE'RE BETTER THAN YOU IN YOUR OWN SPORT!!!"

Sorry that it cheapens the win for you, but I know you saw it as clearly as everyone else in the world did. You saw the US dominating Canada in the zone. You weren't surprised Canada took a penalty there.

And then you saw the ref make a completely ridiculous, completely phantom even-up call.

I know it sucks to admit that that is what turned the game in your favor, but that doesn't mean it didn't.

People try to say the US choked in the 3rd, but no. Canada just came on strong and, like nearly every hockey game ever between two teams fairly close in talent, Canada got the better of the play being down 2 goals. The fact is, the US had broken that momentum in OT and was dominating when the awful call was made that turned the game for the last time.

I admit I'm generalizing, but the American attitude towards sports (especially international sports) is to give them major media and public attention only when the USA is winning. You see it especially with hockey and soccer. Or look at baseball... the only major international tournament is the World Baseball Classic and all the American media does is bad mouth it. If they were to win one, suddenly they would celebrate how great America is at baseball. Or even basketball... sure they care about the olympics, but where's the passion when it comes to FIBA world championships? I don't hear a peep from major American sports media outlets like SI or ESPN. Where is the passion for the game?

Not sure if this was posted.. but it's too epic to not be posted!

haha

I was watching it at work with a girl in her mid-twenties, and two older ladies. When Canada scored, me and the younger girl were the only ones that jumped up and screamed "YEAH!!!" while fist pumping. We scared the **** out of the older ladies

This. That penalty was earned by the US by their strong play; they took it to Canada in OT. That player made that hit because the US was running circles around them in the zone. 100% fully deserved and proper call. To get robbed of the PP chance -- an extremely deadly 4-on-3 when the team was already buzzing -- on a phantom even-up call is everything that is bad about hockey.

Yet it happens. In every league. All the time. The way you guard against it is by putting yourself in the position to not be victimized by a bad bounce or bad call or all world performance from one player. Elements that are out of your control. The US didn't do that and while they maybe got the short end of the stick they put themselves in the position to get that short end. It's also worht pointing out that a bad call at the end of a game is really no different than one at the start of the game. Teams have to rise above these things to win and especially in these types of tourneys. It is 100% part of the sport.

The USA men has dominated this hockey tourney, while Canada has struggled pretty much across the board. You guys are the well deserving favourites.

Canada has played fine. It's funny seeing people fight over who can play the underdog card.

It's so close between the U.S./Canada it's literally impossible to predict.

We need some memes up in this thread.

Also: To the rest of the entire world....you're welcome. - Canadian.

I'm pretty sure that if you are behind a player and you clip their skate so they fall it's a penalty. It's the same in soccer. Intention has really nothing to do with it just like if you accidentally high stick someone.
The one exception I've seen is if you dive and touch the puck first and then make contact.

The job of a media outlet is to report on what their viewers care about. Americans will obviously have more interest in something if their team is winning. It's about ratings, not being sore losers.

Nevermind, looked it up myself.

IIHF rule 539: Tripping "A player who shall place his stick, leg, foot, arm, hand or elbow in such a manner that it shall cause his opponent to trip or fall shall be assessed..."

I'm disappointed with the outcome but clearly the US women blew it at the end of the 3rd giving Canada all the momentum. I personally feel that the first two penalties called in OT (crosscheck and slash) should have been let go since it was OT in a gold-medal game. I was very upset when the slash call was made as I felt it was a clear make-up call.

Due to the arguments over the non-call of the penalty shot I would like to weigh in with my opinion. Looking at the replays of the Haley breakaway this is what I've noticed. Knight catches up to Haley faster than she expected so she tried to go around to give her a better angle and one that would possibly not be called a penalty. Her right skate clips Haley's skate as she is doing this and she lunges forward. Neither glove hand comes off of her stick but there clearly is a tugging motion on the back of Haley's jersey causing her right leg to lunge far more forward than a normal stride to retain balance. The only thing that I can think of is the butt-end of Knights stick got caught in the bottom corner of Haley's jersey as she was falling down, causing the tug and subsequent loss of balance by Haley. It's quite possible had that not happened, Haley would have kept her balance from the skate clip and gone in all alone.

Congrats to the Canadian women. The US fans can argue all they want about how the outcome turned out but the Canadian women had to come back from 2 goals down in 3.5 minutes and then win in OT. It appears the US got too tight at the end and were just hoping to weather the storm instead of doing what was working for much of the game. Hopefully, the US women will figure out what their problem is in the Olympics going forward.

All in all, this was a well played game and was pretty even for the most part.

Yes, much better than most would've expected, I suspect. It could've gone another way.

Tomorrow's a new day and another game. Hopefully, it's the same end result. If not, I fully expect American fans to show up here in droves and rub it in!

Seeing all of the comments on here, I really wish I could get as excited as you guys for this gold medal. I really do wish I could get into women's hockey, but every year I just cant get into it. Yeah, i'm really happy Canada won another gold medal, but during the comeback, overtime, and the GWG, I just wasn't as excited as I wanted to be.

Really glad we won ( :handclap: ), but man, I wish I would have been more excited :(

Are you sure you watched the game? I honestly couldn't agree more with you... until today, this was the best hockey game at these Olympics so far, with Russia-USA the only one even close to it.

we are just lucky that this was the ending to the women's game; if it were the mens, HF would have a legit 40/40 forum war right now, with the 20% europeans laughing their ass off:sarcasm:
