Do you have the lottery numbers too? :)
Could have easily went either way even though the Canadians had tons of momentum going into OT. Just takes one mistake either way and unfortunately for the US they made that mistake and let Wickenheiser get a clear cut breakaway.

I'm pretty sure before the penalty Canada had been in the USA zone for maybe 20 seconds of OT. It was domination, but you're right it only takes one bounce and the hockey gods were on Canada's side...

anyway, feel bad for the US girls but congrats to Canada, hope they're partying with the mens team:p:

no I would say stupidly lucky moment in history.

when it's all said and done Canada taking a penalty in OT was the best thing that could have happened for them, because it stopped the flow of the game dead in it's track. If the refs let them play in OT USA wins that game; with out a doubt.

**** happens though and that's why you always try to put up more goals when you have the momentum against a good team.

Oh Kreskin, please tell us how you know this without a doubt??

I have a lot of family in the US and I go there quite frequently and I've noticed one thing about how they watch sports...

When they win, that sport and that team are the most important thing ever. They will rub it in your face and brag about it till the cows come home. If they lose, they just don't pay attention to the sport to team and play it off like it doesn't matter to them anyways.

Except when it comes to the NFL, then loyalties actually exist.

EXACTLY!!! THANK YOU!!!

Swear to Christ I was about to type pretty much the same thing, just trying to figure out the wording in my head.

"WHO CARES ABOUT HOCKEY/SOCCER!!!" But when they win, man oh man...

Please, you can do it in any hockey. You're allowed to defend the crease.

Canada took some obvious penalties, but that call was the first one that shouldn't have been made.

In OT. In a gold medal game.

A cross check to the face shouldn't have been called, in a game that doesn't allow bodychecking?

Ok.

That was the one call in OT that was bang-on. The rest.....let's just say I'm happier that the Swiss advanced women's hockey with their Bronze-medal effort today.

2010 is a little overrated because Canada was the better team in the game and the U.S taking it to overtime was lucky. U.S was arguably better in the tournament but Canada was better in the final and the score should have been like 4-1.

2010 final was the greatest Canadian olympic moment of all time AINEC.

I can't believe this has to be posted for the fourth time, but here we are:

This thread is to discuss the game. Not the validity of female hockey in the Olympics or in general. If you don't like it, don't read it.

The people questioning the overtime calls appear not to have watched the entire game. The refs applied women's hockey rules consistently from the start. End of story.

It's too bad Canada couldn't take that post home with them, like basketball players cut the mesh after the final four. It deserves to go into the HHOF!

And MLB and, to an increasing extent, the NBA. All other sports are mere distractions.

It's nothing to do with the calls. It's everything to do with questioning if women's hockey is a valid sport in the first place.

Seeing all of the comments on here, I really wish I could get as excited as you guys for this gold medal. I really do wish I could get into women's hockey, but every year I just cant get into it. Yeah, i'm really happy Canada won another gold medal, but during the comeback, overtime, and the GWG, I just wasn't as excited as I wanted to be.

Really glad we won ( :handclap: ), but man, I wish I would have been more excited :(

I feel to an extent you make your own luck. The US women had a 2 to 0 lead. Given how evenly matched these teams are that is a pretty big lead. The ref blocked a Canadian player and gave the US a chance at the empty net. I agree that it was fortunate for Canada that the puck hit the post but the US also caught a break getting the chance in the first place.

I don't think everyone in the US is like that. I'm not. It stinks when my team loses and it's great when they win and I don't rub it in peoples faces. Why be a poor winner or loser?

Congratulations, Canada. Epic comeback. You guys must have been jumping like crazy when they tied it.

Not sure if this was posted.. but it's too epic to not be posted!

This. That penalty was earned by the US by their strong play; they took it to Canada in OT. That player made that hit because the US was running circles around them in the zone. 100% fully deserved and proper call. To get robbed of the PP chance -- an extremely deadly 4-on-3 when the team was already buzzing -- on a phantom even-up call is everything that is bad about hockey.

I don't know why so many people are saying the U.S. men should beat Canada. I have zero confidence in any meaningful game against Canada no matter how much better the American team looks. It's obvious God does not want the U.S. beating Canada in hockey.

I think most people would agree that the U.S. has caught up to Canada to the point that it's basically a toss up every time the teams meet now. But no matter how many times we flip the coin, it keeps landing on the Canadian side. :shakehead

The hilarity is when they pretend to be underdogs.

Funny you bring up the NBA. I remember vividly in 2004 when Argentina when the Gold in basketball and the US won bronze with Lebron, Iverson, et. al. there was a ton of "Well, who gives a **** about basketball"

I'm disappointed with the outcome but clearly the US women blew it at the end of the 3rd giving Canada all the momentum. I personally feel that the first two penalties called in OT (crosscheck and slash) should have been let go since it was OT in a gold-medal game. I was very upset when the slash call was made as I felt it was a clear make-up call.

Due to the arguments over the non-call of the penalty shot I would like to weigh in with my opinion. Looking at the replays of the Haley breakaway this is what I've noticed. Knight catches up to Haley faster than she expected so she tried to go around to give her a better angle and one that would possibly not be called a penalty. Her right skate clips Haley's skate as she is doing this and she lunges forward. Neither glove hand comes off of her stick but there clearly is a tugging motion on the back of Haley's jersey causing her right leg to lunge far more forward than a normal stride to retain balance. The only thing that I can think of is the butt-end of Knights stick got caught in the bottom corner of Haley's jersey as she was falling down, causing the tug and subsequent loss of balance by Haley. It's quite possible had that not happened, Haley would have kept her balance from the skate clip and gone in all alone.

Congrats to the Canadian women. The US fans can argue all they want about how the outcome turned out but the Canadian women had to come back from 2 goals down in 3.5 minutes and then win in OT. It appears the US got too tight at the end and were just hoping to weather the storm instead of doing what was working for much of the game. Hopefully, the US women will figure out what their problem is in the Olympics going forward.

All in all, this was a well played game and was pretty even for the most part.
