we are just lucky that this was the ending to the women's game; if it were the mens, HF would have a legit 40/40 forum war right now, with the 20% europeans laughing their ass off:sarcasm:

Depends on which Men's game...

The USA men has dominated this hockey tourney, while Canada has struggled pretty much across the board. You guys are the well deserving favourites.

Wait a second...

I thought the US hasn't played anyone yet. I thought the US hasn't had to deal with a real defense or real goal tending.

How are they suddenly the favorites?

And you can't be the underdog if you're reigning champ.

Congrats to the Canadian women. The US fans can argue all they want about how the outcome turned out but the Canadian women had to come back from 2 goals down in 3.5 minutes and then win in OT. It appears the US got too tight at the end and were just hoping to weather the storm instead of doing what was working for much of the game. Hopefully, the US women will figure out what their problem is in the Olympics going forward.

All in all, this was a well played game and was pretty even for the most part.

Thanks for that. :) The officials were bad for both sides. It pisses me off that some here will belittle Canada's win, merely putting it down to the officiating.

Bull-****. It was a hard fought win - full-stop.

How did Americans feel about that goal in the last minute in 2010? Tainted a bit by the result, but I'm sure they still remember the feeling at the time.

As an American, I really don't remember Parise's goal at all. I frequently have to be reminded that it even happened and that there was a great US moment in that game, since the end result completely overshadowed it and has made me try to put the entire game out of memory ever since. There's no remembering the tying goal without re-living the winning goal.

Seeing all of the comments on here, I really wish I could get as excited as you guys for this gold medal. I really do wish I could get into women's hockey, but every year I just cant get into it. Yeah, i'm really happy Canada won another gold medal, but during the comeback, overtime, and the GWG, I just wasn't as excited as I wanted to be.(

I feel the same way about US women's soccer. You enjoy seeing your country win, but it doesn't feel so special when your team dominates most every other team and everyone expects them to win gold. In women's hockey, it's Canada and US and then everybody else a tier or two below. There's some crazy stat along the lines of 19 of the last 20 championships in women's hockey have been won by Canada or the US, most of them involving those two teams in the final. At least in men's hockey, there's some legitimate competition that can challenge and upset the North American teams. I'd be a lot more thrilled if the US men were to win gold than if the US women were to win it, since it would be a more unexpected and impressive development (nothing to do with sexism), so I can relate.

... You can't hit at all in women's hockey.

The NBC commentators mentioned something about extended arms being the difference between a penalty and a non-penalty. I think that you're allowed to skate into someone with your arms vertical, but extending them horizontally to add even more push force into the check is illegal. On the Canadian crosscheck penalty in OT, the Canadian extended her arms, which is why it was a penalty... or, at least, that's what I gathered.

Sorry that it cheapens the win for you, but I know you saw it as clearly as everyone else in the world did. You saw the US dominating Canada in the zone. You weren't surprised Canada took a penalty there.

And then you saw the ref make a completely ridiculous, completely phantom even-up call.

I know it sucks to admit that that is what turned the game in your favor, but that doesn't mean it didn't.

People try to say the US choked in the 3rd, but no. Canada just came on strong and, like nearly every hockey game ever between two teams fairly close in talent, Canada got the better of the play being down 2 goals. The fact is, the US had broken that momentum in OT and was dominating when the awful call was made that turned the game for the last time.

dont worry once the american men lose tomorrow all this will be forgotten

I dream of a world where people won't blame inevitable losses on refs. Both teams played hard, the one who wanted it more played harder and snatched the win away from the losers. Team USA should respond with a stronger fight in 2018

I admit I'm generalizing, but the American attitude towards sports (especially international sports) is to give them major media and public attention only when the USA is winning. You see it especially with hockey and soccer. Or look at baseball... the only major international tournament is the World Baseball Classic and all the American media does is bad mouth it. If they were to win one, suddenly they would celebrate how great America is at baseball. Or even basketball... sure they care about the olympics, but where's the passion when it comes to FIBA world championships? I don't hear a peep from major American sports media outlets like SI or ESPN. Where is the passion for the game?

Maybe it's because I was raised by parents from Portugal who came to American in the 70's and that is why I enjoy the international competitions especially in soccer, but I get what you're saying about some Americans attitudes towards sports in general. Here it seems like everyone loves the winner and doesn't really care for the loser. I just wanted to point out that not every American is like that. Thank you for expanding on your point and explaining it to me. Congratulations once again and here's to a great game tomorrow :)

Are you kidding, you guys are so much more proven so far in this tourny. You've played some legitimate heavyweights, while we've been "beating up" the likes of Latvia, etc. Trust me, you guys are the frontrunners!

Yet it happens. In every league. All the time. The way you guard against it is by putting yourself in the position to not be victimized by a bad bounce or bad call or all world performance from one player. Elements that are out of your control. The US didn't do that and while they maybe got the short end of the stick they put themselves in the position to get that short end. It's also worht pointing out that a bad call at the end of a game is really no different than one at the start of the game. Teams have to rise above these things to win and especially in these types of tourneys. It is 100% part of the sport.

actually no, there really was very little more they could do to guard against that outcome. See, those 2 goals by canada, call them mistakes on the part of the US -- that's not surprising. Canada scoring at least 2 is completely expected. Canada is a very good team and there's no such thing as mistake-free hockey.

The US team HAD put itself in the position to win thanks to being up 2-0 at the time they made those mistakes. Then, remember, the US came out firing in OT and dominated canada. they literally did everything they could have to win that game.

But then the ref committed a deliberately incorrect act that destroyed everything they had worked for to that point.

remember OT is 4 on 4 in the olympics, so a power play is 4 on 3. those are absolutely deadly. so to be denied one on a phantom is literally very likely changing the outcome of the game.

and it did. there may be some shame in admitting it, if you are a fan of the benefiting team, but there is no denying what happened.

Are you sure you watched the game? I honestly couldn't agree more with you... until today, this was the best hockey game at these Olympics so far, with Russia-USA the only one even close to it.

Yeah, I fell asleep during the first period, and woke up to catch the 2nd, 3rd, and overtime. I was up until 5 am last night, so maybe it was just the fatigue that sucked all the energy out of the game for me?

I'm actually kind of mad that i'm not ecstatic over the win because I really want to celebrate (At the American's expense) like everyone else.

...anything less than a 3 goal up win will seem like a loss...:sarcasm:

Seriously...it should be an epic game with no clear favourite

2002 gold medal game was a complete disgrace of officiating by that American ref, there has never been a more one sided game like that...so excuse me if I don't feel bad for the Americans for not getting the benefit of two lousy calls.

You may very well be the underdog even if you're the reigning champion. There is significant turnover in four years.

So, you've won the last 2 Olympics... the last 3 out of 4... But no, the turnover is huge every 4 years for Canadian hockey and they're magically the underdog this time around with a roster that features... Toews, Crosby, Doughty, Weber, Carter, Duchene, Vlasic, Keith, etc. etc

Fantastic comeback win for Team Canada. I didn't think they'd do it when it was 2-0 US, but as soon as Canada got the first one, I actually thought the tying goal was inevitable and wasn't shocked when it happened.

Huh? I think more like if the American men win we'll all forget about this. If they lose then it'll just add to the misery and I think most U.S. fans will want to take a break from hockey for a while.

yes but that pain will distract from this pain leading to healing

the US girls have had 16 years to solve the olympic riddle, looks like they will have to make it 20, Awesome for our girls to outwork and out will their opponent yet again.

at least when the american men lose tomorrow the fans can dig out the old "they still have a chance at bronze which makes them the 3rd best hockey nation in teh world"

I'm just joshing a bit with the US fans, that's all. Even though I do believe the US is the favourite heading into the game, I will not be surprised if we win.

I have this nagging feeling, though, that it will come down to officiating, however...;)

These two teams are fantastic to watch play.

Great game until OT. Would have liked to see the ref not factor into the outcome as heavily as she did. Direct headshot elbow is one thing, a pad check(even with a warning from the 2nd period) before the whistle on a point shot, is not equivalent and should not have constituted a makeup call.

Penalty Shot is the right call when #22 was tripped up by #21, not cross-checking.

Wasn't in possession and didn't have control of the puck when the penalty was committed.

Correct call.

cool game....two very equal teams, and a great rivalry that is only growing....congratz canadian wowen
