I’d love to see him be that Armia type guy who can play some responsible minutes and chip in with some big goals once in a while. We’re still missing that.

Interesting at the parallels. Armia 6'3" 212 finally arrived full time in the NHL with the Jets when he was 23 after the mid 1st round talent battled injury issues after his draft. Svechnikov 6'3" 208 just turned 24 and is also mid 1st round pick that has battled injury issues after his draft that seem to have derailed his opportunity. Maybe that is where the similarity ends but it seems like Detroit fans liked the guy?

I think someone (Sawyer maybe) mentioned something about Maurice skating the guys hard early in the camp, and given how much the team slowed down as a whole in the third, it wouldn't surprise me if they were tired.

I may have misheard though.
Look at wheeler and Stats!! 2 stride & glide 20 feet their las so many shifts.t

As I said in the Pre Game/GDT Thread last night:

Can’t wait until we play the Canes and tell them we have the better Svechnikov. In this accent…..

Yeah load management is starting to become more of a thing in other sports like soccer and the NBA.

I wouldn't mind seeing some players rested every now and then.
Exactly. Meanwhile, in the NHL, a veteran on the top line may get a couple of games off at the end of the season, but obviously they should be out there for 20+ minutes on all back-to-backs.

:dunno:

One of these days. Maybe. Someone needs to try it before data can show it's a good idea.

Mario Lemieux would skip road trips quite often.

I am shocked the Jets don’t do load management. it’s insane.

Mario was fighting cancer so it is not the same.

I agree that both Wheeler and Stastny should skip about 10 games a year to keep them fresh for the PO's but I doubt either Wheeler or Stastny would go for it. If Wheeler was willing to play with cracked ribs last season does anyone think he would actually agree to sit out of games when healthy?

Also NHL hockey is not a cheap ticket and most fans want to see the best players on the ice so having healthy players siting would not go down so well with a lot of fans.

Personally I hope Wheeler does not make the US team so he can rest during the Olympic NHL shutdown in Feb.

I don't think Wheeler makes the team.
Kane, Boeser, Patches, Tkachuk make it before him.

That's the problem with parity, you need to ice the very best lineup every night to make the playoffs

yea if they use it in basketball there is no reason to not try it in hockey except for job security for coaches. They have been tiptoeing around the edges by load managing goalies better and also building top 9’s vs top 6’s and playing superstars less minutes in some cases. They have stopped short of giving vets nights off in season. I think the natural place to start is on B2B games.

some coach will do it at some point. When players are playing for contracts that are attached to stats it’s tougher but we are probably talking about oldest vets anyways.

If that was true players could simply be poached from their AHL team anytime up until the signing deadline. Seriously doubt that is possible.

That does not apply to players in the AHL on 2 way contracts. And it does not mean that an AHL team can poach players from other AHL teams. It would require an NHL team to offer an NHL contract to a player who is not good enough to already be on an NHL contract. Not much fear of poaching there.

Ok, that makes sense. The signing deadline is the time limit then as it is for everyone.

Big part of the reason I stopped driving down for Timberwolves games was load management. Roll down the highway and overpay for Cavs tickets only to have LeBron not make the trip cuz he needs rest? Nope, sorry, not taking the risk. Fool me once. I'd contend I'd end up at the same point really quick for NHL games. I'd also contend that Winnipeg from November through February is going to be very high on star players "games managed" lists.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the point completely and it's highly logical to approach it that way. I'm just going to sit at home if my $10K a year ain't gonna garner me an opportunity to see Sid/Ovi/Matthews/McDavid because they're being "managed". It becomes eerily reminiscent of pre-season very quickly (and yes, I get they aren't managing it to the same degree).
