I look over at Cincinnati and see Suarez and Castillo both stinking it up this year. Suarez gives us a good arm at 3B and legitimate 40 HR potential at Rogers. Castillo gives us a legitimate number 2 option behind Ryu. Could both be buy-low candidates. I love Bryant but I don’t think he extends with us.

I have no idea what state the Cubs are in right now, but they have a lot of pieces i like.

Big fan of Willson Contreras, but not sure how we feel about our current catcher options going forward. Kirk does have a lot of potential i'll admit but Contreras would be a big upgrade behind the plate.

Kyle Hendricks is an obvious one. I think the price would be super high, but justifiably so. He is at worst a borderline ace, but could be a very good number 2 behind Ryu. Signed for 3 years after this season, at a very affordable $14 million a year. We could pay a big price for him to be a staple at the top of the rotation for the rest of our 1st window.

I have to say it... Kris Bryant. He is my ideal target if we decide to search for a 3B. He is a UFA this offseason, so i dont know if we target him as a rental for this season, long-term in the offseason, or both. It would be risky as he will be 30 years old looking for a large contract, coming off a down year. But i believe he could fill in our infield perfectly.

I dont think Semien is here past this season, so Vlad stays at 1B, Biggio takes back over 2B, and Bichette has SS, with Bryant filling in our weirdly situated 3B. Could make for a weird situation going forward with Martin coming up. But i think we could figure out positioning when the time comes especially with the versatility in guys like Biggio or Martin himself.

Again, no idea how we plan to handle the infield going forward, but another upcoming Javier Baez could be a versatile option there. (Going off of baseball-reference) He can play all of SS, 2B, and 3B.

I dont know the Cubs' plans with any of these guys, or how they will handle their upcoming UFA's, just a few targets i wanted to throw out there.

Also, i obviously dont mean we should get all these guys. It would likely be 2 at most. Just a couple guys i wouldnt mind getting my hands on, and pieces i think could fit here now and long term.

Contreras would be an interesting add but i can't imagine he comes cheap. He would be under team control beyond this season (arb eligible) and is considered by many to be the best all around catcher in baseball. Chicago would likely (and rightly) demand a hefty sum for him.

Bryant is overrated. No thanks.

If either one of those players are moved they would not come cheap, especially Castillo. Less than a month of subpar performance won’t lower their value. The only thing that would likely do so is you’d be getting ~.5 of a season less of team control than you would have if you made the move in the offseason. However, you’re on the right track with the Reds being a potential partner to deal with closer to the deadline if their struggles continue.

yeah i never said Contereras would be cheap... he is probably the best somewhat realistic catcher target right now. i semi-wanted Realmuto this season as a free agent. but happy we got Springer instead.

catcher isnt the biggest need right now, at all really. we have organizational depth. but if we really wanted to spring forward and pony up for a big upgrade, i would love Contereras. probably just a pipe dream though.

ive wanted Castillo since the offseason. he was talked about big time on here in the offseason. whether it would be Biggio, Gurriel, Hernandez. i would personally be fine with including Gurriel in a package for him... i think.

Gurriel will get it together eventually, but even with his production, can the Jays not get that out of a guy like Palacios anyways? Gurriel is hitting below 200 with an OBP around 220. His career numbers are between 270 and 280 with an OBP closer to 315 - 320. I think you can find that type of production fairly easily.

yeah Gurriel is great but expendable IMO. some combo of Springer/Hernandez/Grichuk in the outfield, with bench guys like Davis and Palacios will suffice. i would absolutely explore moving Gurriel for a good young-ish starter with control.

I agree. If i'm trading futures for any position it's probably for a pitcher. Catcher isn't in the best state right now but there's still time for things to improve there so it's not a pressing need

i thought Jansen was the answer but him becoming a offensive black hole isnt helping. hopefully just a slow start. i do like Jansen.

Kirk at only 22 is very intriguing as he has loads of potential. not a bad option to bank on as a long term catcher.

Moreno is also a very good prospect. could even be better than Kirk realistically.

so yeah, far from a big need but not something that is completely solidified long term.

Starting pitching is/will be a need going forward. aside from Ryu we dont have anyone signed for next year. Stripling has arb, Matz/Ray are UFA's. not saying those guys are as good as gone, just talking security wise.

pretty good FA class of top end pitchers, except most are very old (Greinke, Verlander, Scherzer), and i doubt many leave their teams, like Kershaw.

Using assets to bring in a young, controllable pitcher, like Castillo, or German Marquez (one of my top targets), along with a vet on a short term deal (Greinke on a big 2 year deal???), as well as revisiting a middle rotation guy like Matz/Ray, or exploring someone like Kevin Gausman or Dylan Bundy would fill out our rotation nicely, along with a prospect like Pearson or Manoah taking starting responsibilities.
