Rumor: Evans asking for $4M x 5 years

Plus if we lose Evans, Armia and Savard this summer then that's essentially our entire 1st PK unit gone down the drain. Right now we have the 7th best PK in the league, if we lose all of those guys I could easily see us drop into the bottom 10 in the league on the penalty kill. I think a lot of people are overlooking how much that's going to hurt the team next season.

The whole discussion kind of reminds me of how adding Carrier completely changed the look of the D. Sometimes a guy's impact is felt well beyond his actual play just because it puts everyone else into roles they are better suited for. I get the feeling that Evans is one of those cases.

As noted elsewhere, this was already a bottom 10 PK with all of these guys on the roster.

21-22: 27th (75.6%)
22-23: 29th (72.7%)
23-24: 24th (76.5%)

Maybe they have made some systemic and projectable change that makes them a surefire top 10 PK going forward. I don't think I'd be that surprised, though, if the PK slipped into the bottom half of the league next year even if they brought all three guys back.

Gainey and MB found many, many 4Cs.

And no 4C gets 4m and 5 years and stays with that team to the end of that contract. That's not 4C money.

I was a big fan of Evans, then I had to reconsider when I saw all the criticism of him here. In the last few games, I noticed two goals that were directly attributable to Evans losing his man (I noticed this issue before the last few games too). He might not be the defensive stud that many (including me) thought. Having said that, his ask is less than the average salary for an NHL player ($ 95.6/23 players = $4.2 MM). Five years does seem a little long, too risky. If we can sign him for $3.5 for 4 years, it seems worthwhile. If we can get a good return, yes, I agree with others that he is replaceable, especially at $3.5MM

Armia rescued 23-24 with his play down the stretch or it would have been similar to 22-23.
Evans is who he has always been and is not worth double his current salary in my books.

I'm betting HuGo are the latter these are the same guys who described "Emotional Maturity" as being one of Marty's best traits.

We will have a young team and we need to surround those players with big productive players, not with overpaid cast.

Structure the contract as $15M signing bonus this summer, and $500 000 per season for 5 yrs. Total $17,5M, but cap hit of 3,5/season. He can invest the money and bank the interest to make up for part of for the missing $2,5M

Couldn't find a 4th line center, they found many. Danault, Dvorak, Dominic Moore, Halpern, Smolinski, Metropolit, Juneau. A 4th line center easy to find. Beck will probably play that role next year.

That was Bergevins strength. Finding us some 4th liners. That's all we got for the past decadeI. It is not particularly hard to find a 4th line center.

Yeah, exactly. A few years back people were saying Poehling was going to be the greatest 3rd line center we've ever had.

Beck has had some really great flashes, but he's not even close a half baked product yet. I'm a huge Beck fan and was positive about the pick from day 1. But he's a far ways off having the trust of a coach like Evans does and for good reason.

Evans is not getting overpay in Mtl. Hughes seems to be pretty stiff in nego. He usually gets it done fast. Good for Jake for wanting a big contract, but he’s not getting it in Mtl.
