ATD2025 Draft Thread Part II

Three Rivers will round out its 3rd line with some more chemistry.

His best offensive season came with Jacques Lemaire centering him and while we don't have Guy Lafleur on the right wing, Mickey MacKay is hardly a slouch offensively, playing a similar offensive style game to Lafleur with his elite skating and ability to generate goals just as well as he scores them. MacKay's defensive brilliance also allows Lemaire to get into the fore-check heavily as he did in real life, and this player time to find holes in the defense.

A 3 time postseason AS and key secondary star on the great Habs dynasty of the mid to late 70's, his offensive output spikes come playoff time so we're happy to add:

Steve Shutt, LW

Steve Shutt... Bowman's whipping boy.

Scotty was a hard-*** with players but most often got angry at Shutt during practice and after games, unsatisfied with his effort or play.

And yet Shutt managed to play for (finishing as a 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 in AS voting) and outlive Bowman in Montreal. Unlike numerous players who were traded by Bowman over the years in Montreal and other stops as head coach. :dunno:

The book Blood Feud has some good stuff about Bowman's use of designated whipping boys. For the period of time that book covers, it was Aaron Ward, who didn't outlast Bowman, but wasn't by any means hurried out the door.
I think Bowman genuinely valued having guys around with specific flaws he was able to hammer on, while still contributing on the ice.

That sounds like a great read. I'll put it on the to-do list certainly!

And I'd agree wholeheartedly with your last sentence. Bowman strikes me as a coach who was big on effort, 2 way hockey, and attention to detail/doing things his way (he adapted well w/the latter part) and I think Shutt is someone (a quick breeze through newspapers confirms it) who needed that whip early in his career, and responded to become a more all around player by the mid 70's.

Lemaire, same story. Bowman molded him into one of the best 2 way C's in hockey for the back half of his career. The report cards on him through the dynasty are generally glowing with mentions of this.

I can't help but yet again draft one of my favourite fourth liners in this setting.

Not only is he a quality offensive producer, but he is a great two-way player that can play both wing or centre at even-strength or on the kill.

The Windsor Spitfires are thrilled to reunite with LW/C, Vincent Damphousse.

Will PM next.

Blair Russel moved from center to right wing to play with Bowie.

For a decade plus around here he was C/RW.

Then some game reports showed he played some LW. (Guys played two or three positions back then)

Russel is best a C/W, ... or F...

(An ideal 13th forward in ATDs to deal with question marks as to what position he played his best.)

Chicago selects Joe Pavelski, C/RW

Pavelski is a useful 4th liner for us as he is defensively responsible, can play wing at ES but Center on the PP allowing us to move Gilbert Perrault to the 1st PP unit, and gives us a RHS option for faceoffs.

Pavelski is also another clutch playoff performer for our squad, which is loaded with them.

His best position was LW. Over his 10 year career, he played LW for 8 or 9 of them- that's a lot more than "some game reports". The only time he was ever talked about for all star teams was LW.

Also, Russel(l) didn't move from center to RW to play with Bowie; one of the few times I actually have Russell(l) at RW is for a game or two in 1900, where Bowie is actually at LW. Then he moves to center- Bowie still at LW. Then he moves to rover- Bowie still at LW. By 1901 I have him in the summaries at LW, Bowie at rover. 1902, Russel(l) is at LW, Bowie at rover. If anything, the assertion should be that Russel(l) moved from center to LW to play with Bowie, but the game summaries don't really bear that out, either. The post-dynasty Montreal Victorias were playing around with their line-up a lot, and both Russel(l) and Bowie were mainstays in that transition period. Considering all the information we have, the likeliest reason why Bowie was ultimately placed at rover and Russel(l) was ultimately placed at LW is because that was the configuration that the Victoria Executive thought worked best, not so Russel(l) could play with Bowie... as Russel(l) was already playing with Bowie before the switch occured.

He likely played a handful of games at RW while they were figuring out their line up and in the case of injuries, but he was predominantly a LW, and I'll go toe-to-toe with anyone with game summaries.

It doesn't matter that "for a decade plus around here) people had him at C/RW- the game summaries show that to not be the case. I know the ATD gets a little loose with mult-positional players, but putting him at C or RW is a real stretch to me.
