Luckily Nylander is already on a cheap 1 year deal and has more value than a second at the deadline!
So instead of trading Karlsson for pieces, we trade him for one piece just to trade again at the deadline?

Karlsson is a lot more difficult to trade than Nylander.
He's also worth a lot more than Nylander.

Why? Because he's a forward that just likes to skate a little farther to reach the net?
I will never understand the infatuation with this guy. Be who you are and stop pretending to be a defenseman. Treat him like a 5th forward and evaluate him as such, but nobody should ever have paid him anywhere near $11.5M AAV because he's some sort of unicorn defenseman.
He. Never. Plays. Defense.
Call him a 100 point forward who never bothers to pay attention when the other team has the puck, and pay him the (still hefty) amount that such a designation deserves. But things like him getting that contract, let alone winning Norris trophies, is just nonsense.

You don't understand because you don't have a good understanding of what hockey is. He is a defenseman. He plays defense. He just doesn't do it in a way that pleases you. That's really all it comes back to. You just don't like how he plays. He is not a 4th forward jumping deep in the offensive zone all the time. That's a caricature that has been made up by people and ran with it as their go-to way to slam a guy they just don't like play a game.

We have a point per game 27 year old forward capable of playing center and wing who’s rumored to want 9mil per season(which is a fair ask tbh given certain other players) the concern amongst fans is that we can’t afford to pay another player 9mil+ when coupled with the Tavares, Matthews and Marner contracts. I don’t think they solution is to trade him for an older more injury prone player who’s already making more than the amount we “can’t afford” due to depth concerns.

I understand there are lots of ways to play while on the ice. I'm not asking him to throw open ice hip checks or be a monster in clearing the crease. But you'll never convince me that he's actively engaged in neutralizing the opposition, as opposed to just waiting for his next chance to play offense.
There are literally videos of him watching opposing forwards skate past him, as though it would be too big an inconvenience for him to intervene.
Erik Karlsson is a top 3 player in the world. Who cares about his style of play?

If it’s a 1 for 1 player deal it’s gonna take Matthews. Karlsson is a game changer, Nylander is a luxury piece when on a good contract and he’s going to want a significant raise that he’s not worth.
