Can't help but wonder what signing Hoecht means for Epenesa's future. Rousseau-Hoecht-Epenesa-Solomon isn't exactly an impressive group of edge rushers. Another addition seems pretty likely. And Epenesa seems most likely to be released of the bunch.

They'll carry 5. From a purely numbers perspective, they have to replace Smoot and Miller.

Byron Murphy just got 3yr, 22M AAV.

Really wish Beane could have gotten Benford done before these deals. Always best to be the first mover.

There's no such thing as hard and fast rules in the NFL, but if there was mine would be never pay a CB from a Sean McDermott defense big money, and here's why:
  1. McD gets average CB play from guys that don't belong in the league (i.e. Dane Jackson, Levi Wallace). When he gets an above average guy he turns them into a star (Tre White).
  2. Lately, the CB position is aging out worse than the RB position. And the way McD has his CBs sell out in their run fits, our guys take a beating.
If I ever made an exception, it would be for a younger guy like Benford. But man, the back to back concussions to end the year should give everyone pause before dropping a bag of money for him.

I won't be mad or upset if we pay Benford, but I'm all about investing draft picks and some hidden gem FAs in the position.

Bummer seeing Hollins go to New England. Gotta imagine they’re paying him about double what Buffalo could afford to, though.

From both sides. Bill's likely wanted to upgrade that position, Hollins likely wanted a bit more money than they were offering.

Hollins will also be missed on special teams.

I would expect speed option in the draft now.

Shakir
Palmer
Coleman
Samuel
Draft
Shavers

Maybe they'll carry 5. Maybe they won't. But they don't "have to" keep 5. They could pretty easily draft a starter to play opposite Rousseau in R1, then roll with Hoecht as a run plugger off the bench, and Solomon as the situational pass rusher, releasing Epenesa. At best, I think AJE would be fighting for a roster spot in training camp in that scenario.

Love both signings. Both smart and tough with skills that should play up when used in concert with our talent. Not going to wow the X masses groaning for a name, but smart moves.

Palmer feels like the intermediate-deep version of Shakir. You don't know how he's doing it, but he wins in all the less-measured facets of the game. Great hands and physicality at the catch, funky route details. He's had tons of success against KC relative to other opponents - he's a McDuffie beater. I think he'll instantly mesh with Josh. Love that he's from 90 minutes away.

I didn't know much about Hoecht (hoyt), but the Rams have been doing something right developing their DL. I'm a sucker for versatile pieces (the video of him winning as a nickel vs Metcalf lol). Crazy RAS coming undrafted out of Brown, worked through multiple roles and weights to establish himself. Gonna be a McD favorite. He creates waves of energy rushing off the edge, often smashing into OL and freeing teammates. Super durable. Elite special teamer (hell he comps to Mack on ST).

Happy how this sets us up for draft. Still going for impact on DL, love the 1Ts in the 2nd/3rd. Speed/boundary at WR. CB remains high priority.

Money may of been one issue along with the Bill's wanting more from that position, but Hollins also had played for McDaniels before so that's another factor.

Hoecht will replace Smoot's snaps for the Bills, offers position versatile, can really move around and give offenses problems with line reads, good run d, and pass rush accountability.

Look for a Rotational FA DT target for Bills

Pass rusher/Edge will likely be draft pick because of cost, Soloman development also possible

Palmer gives you a little bit of both Cooper and Hollins capabilities.

Shavers could be a Hollins type replacement as 5/6 WR and Special Teams.

Top priority Bills FA to return Ty Johnson, Kenny Gainwell is possible replacement if Johnson leaves

Rousseau was asked why he signed now and not wait to see what deals were there in the future and he basically just said because I don’t want to be anywhere else.

It’s so weird to have that be 100% believable in one building and feel like fan service in the other one.

I mean…I wouldn’t want to leave either. I am sure he could have gotten more if he waited….i think he could have gotten more NOW. But if you want to give me life changing money to stay on a team competing for a ring every year…yeah I’ll listen to that. Grass isn’t always greener…even if the money is
Preach. Winning cures all ills.
2 hour plus drive (in no QEW/401 congestion) is generally not right across the border, ;) but carry on

Was thinking DaQuan replacement, my bad.
Former Alabama and Raiders WR Henry Ruggs could do it in half that time. Before you correctly condemn me for saying that's in bad taste, please also note Ruggs is already in transitional housing as a non-violent offender and will be first eligible for parole in 2026. That's pretty damn quick, but maybe not surprising given the plea deal.
I think he’s down to around 260 now. Good little video on him. Looks very versatile.

What is with these Buffalo Hoecht / Hecht (I know they are pronounced differently) players who are German / Swiss / Dutch Army knife skill sets?

thanks for the post. Assuming the source is accurate, my inference is Beane went into FA seeking versatile players at both those positions to enable greater flexibility in their continuing FA activities and at the draft. A good way to not get too pigeonholed as that could either drive up costs in FA or make them too predictable and potentially settlers at the draft. We'll see how it unfolds.

I think Epenesa is closer to be a starter than being a camp cut. If he he’s cut, it’s for cap space not because he can’t beat out Solomon.
I don’t think cutting him is even an option for BB. He has numerous options for clearing cap space. AJ is a good player. Not great. But certainly serviceable. I think he stays, even if we bring in an Edge like we all hope.

Vikings doing WORK today.

First they get DT Jonathan Allen on a 3/$60M.

Now it looks like they're getting DT Javon Hargrave.

Oh, and they snagged an OG too:

Vikings have no draft capital this year. 1, 5, 5. They blew their load on Turner and Smith.
