We are one Chabot injury away from him being logging the most mins on defense. There is an issue there and Brannstrom is not the problem.
That is true. He is also not the solution. The solution is on its way in the form of Sanderson, Thomson and JBD.

This board can be hilarious at times.

A 22 year old D with 85 games in his NHL career has two bad games and it's bust time. Especially odd given that the 10 or so games before that we're good to very good. Do people expect 22 year old defensemen who are just breaking into the league to be paragons of consistency? That's crazy.

Look at what what Brannstrom has done compared to every other D in his draft (except 2 top 5 picks) and he is right on track. Tracking better than just about everyone except for Makar and Heiskanen. And he'd likely stack up even better if he'd been played more in the NHL, as he deserved.
At Brannstrom’s peak where do you see him on laying on a good to very good team.

Pretty much no one is calling him a bust. Question is whether he fits long-term and, if not, when is the best time to execute that decision.

We are 'done' rebuilding so I am not sure if we should be worried about long term. This is a bottom 10 team.
The sens want to make the playoffs next year ? Getting rid of brannstrom and hoping Sanderson comes in and carries the load with Chabot is asking for trouble.

There is plenty if room to keep Sanderson brannstrom and Chabot on the left side next year. Bigger issue is improving on Zaitzev Mete and Brown

I would only really entertain moving Brann if we bring in at least a Holden-level player.

Personally I think in a year or two he'd be a fantastic fit beside Sanderson, playing RD. So second pairing when we start being a competitive team.

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Brannstrom
UFA - JBD/Thomson

Depending on which one of JBD or Thomson emerges as a regular I'd target a PK specialist on the 3rd pairing (with Thomson) or a two way guy (with JBD).

I think he's a guy that could be an extremely effective #5 playing easier 5v5 minutes that can play up the lineup when injuries hit. He would also be a guy you ride late in games if down a goal or two and pitch in as an effective PP2 D. I know we need beef on the back end, but I think he fits in beautifully behind Chabot and Sanderson. Almost a perfect role for him as the 3rd LD. A left side (assuming Sanderson is who we think he is) of Chabot, Sanderson and Brannstrom is extremely capable. Keeping in mind Brannstrom likely only plays 12ish mins a night in that scenario.

Like Joe Corvo in the 2006-07 run?
We got a ton of mileage out our 3 pair that year, no Dman on the team averaged more than 23 mins a night, and Corvo was getting over 18 on the third Pair. Depth on the backend is a great thing when you have it.

Absolutely. We haven't had depth on defense for yearsss. Tampa runs with Serge on its third pairing

we should be able to find a bottom pairing defensemen like Holden pretty easily without trading assets imo
Sure. Has that happened for this team in your lifetime?

Either way, I'm not suggesting we move Brannstrom for that, necessarily. But, if we don't see him as part of the future and can get a similar young player who we do see as part of the future, I can get behind that deal.

There's usually some UFA guys worth targeting. We just need to stop shopping in the bargain bin of bargain bins and ending up with guys like DelZotto.

ya, thats a pro scouting issue for sure

there are a lot of bottom pairing defensemen in this years UFA market that won't get contracts that we can pickup.

Though I think we need to heavily upgrade our top 2 right side and shoot Zatizev, Brown and Mete into the sun

One thing I'd like to note is that I'm a Flyers fan as well as a Sens fan, and Id like to point out how great the Flyers D prospects looked only a few years ago.

You can't really assume everyone is gonna pan out, or even be an impact player in the end. Obviously we hope they all pan out, but.. Yeah.

and remember when Karlsson, Cowen, Weircioch, Rundblad were supposed to be the best D corps in the league

Agreed. I think I’m pretty much on the record that Brannstrom has a spot here next year assuming no outside additions but moving forward there may not be room for him. I think the team brings either Thomson or JBD up full time next year out of camp, question is which one.

If we find another Holden.. who is easily top 4 calibre on this team .. we will be fine.
If he's a lefty .. Brannstrom will be on the fringe if he remains. I think they should keep him for another year. I think they should move Zaitsev which could prove to be hard.
Adding another Holden.. where does Brannstrom fit if Zaitsev remains.

Yup. The 2010s were going to bring Ottawa back to the glory days of having a stellar defence corps. Can't wait for the 2020s!
