Rather than add a sweetner why not just accept less than what Joseph's value is on the open market something like Future Considerations or minor league player. If a sweetner must be added I would add Brannstrom for a 3rd rd pick since his role is easily replaced with Guennette/Kleven/Larsson or Matinpalo, Ottawa has plenty of decent defensive depth especially since they got Thomson back.

Because Joseph has a 3m caphit with 2 years left after this year. This isn't a contract that has value on the open market. This is a contract you have to pay a hefty price to offload.

Then add Brannstrom who can easly be replaced & frees up more money.

Clearly someone will need to go. And if it’s brannstrom it’s brannstrom. But don’t say easy to replace. Look how long it took us to find competent d men. Nearly a decade. He’s a good d man. It’s good to have good d man and they’re not easy to find
To be fair, it took us a lot g time to find top 4 d, replacing Brannstrom means finding a bottom pair guy.

Then again, we've had some pretty awful bottom pair guys in the past...

I think @Aragon just misses having Carkner on the bottom pair, can't really blame him.

Well yeah that my point. Good bottom pair d are not hard to find lol. Ones that can step up into the top 4??? Harder.

Well, I think Kleven will be one eventually, but in a different mold.

Does replacing Brannstrom need to be replaced by someone as good? I don't think so, he's a commodity right now, one we should hold onto while we can but understand that he is expendable if needs be.

In reality anyone can step in. As long as you’re a man or identify as one. That’s the only prerequisite

If it were easy to replace him one of those guys in Belleville likely would have and saved the sens a million.

I don't think Joseph's contract requires a "hefty" price to offload and Brannstrom certainly isn't easily replaceable with what we have on hand. Certainly not by Kleven at this point in time.

He’s the one to go. Played 10 mins last night. He’s good just not needed as badly as the other trade options. He can be replaced. Guenette, Kleven or Thomson can play those 10 mins and not hurt us.
 
We have struggled for like 10 years getting good bottom pair defenceman who can play up the line up and still play good.

But now we suddenly have 3-4 of them?
We’ve struggled with depth everywhere. Forwards as well. We can’t trade Joseph and give assets to move him.
You can trade kubalik if you want and lose 25 goals. His replacement, I doubt gets close to 25 goals.
Again…10 mins, not that important on this team and still very small and questionable for playoffs.

but what happens if one of our top 4 get injured. we just forfeit the season?

because those Brannstrom replacements are sketch NHLers, let alone top 4 caliber.

Not to mention those 3-4 all looked worse than Brannstrom just a week or two ago.
 
He was our top Corsi D and top Fenwick D, giving up 6 shot attempts while he was on the ice and the team generating 3 shots while he was on the ice.

He did have 100% offensive zone starts but I don't know if the team won a FO while he was on either.

Interestingly enough the two players ahead of Brann on the fancy stats were Chartier and Greig. Each around 60% offensive zone starts.

I would say the guys that were supposed to carry the team fared much worse than our support players.
