He's seven now, but we're still thinking about another one.

Premise: Sign Pinto to 2+ AAV for 2 years; No LTIR for Norris; Misses no more than 4

1. Trade Brannstrom ; Good #5 can move up if needed. Doesn't clear enough cap w replacement (6d total) / would still be pressed right up against it with no wiggle room for injuries; Tradeable

2. Trade Joseph; Big Bounce Back year coming; Speed Speed Speed; PKer; Little Offense; Clears enough Cap + for Pinto; Would create Wiggle room for injury callups; Can allow better players sent down to be called up; Requires a nice sweetener

3. Trade Kubalik; Quality Depth that was missing. Can play all top 3 lines; Produces Offense ; Clears enough Cap for Pinto; Could create Wiggle room for injury callups; Can allow better players sent down to be called up; Would create a small return vs requiring a sweetener.

4. Waive Joseph; Sens Greig Down; No Assets lost unless Joseph is claimed and that improves the trade Joseph scenario; Clears 2 for Pinto; No wiggle room

Maybe should be a poll ; Pick your poison.

Brannstrom can’t be traded. If he came in shaky to preseason maybe? But the guy was a monster and looks great.
Doesn't represent the best option for a trade at this point; imo but its still a possibility ... What's best in the mind of PD is an entirely different thing

Ya want them all. Guess its one of the better problems to have at least of too many players you want. It seems hard to believe that Josephs contract requires a huge sweetener. That must be due to the bad leverage we have right now. But if we could fiddle enough until some team realizes they need MJ's speed surely the leverage would change a little bit?

2.95 Contract 3 years remaining) is the issue when 0 5v5 goals in 2022-23 3 goals total 56 GP 14:01 TOI. His production with Tamp was ok but not great.

NHL teams with space know Dorion is in a bind and they want to get what they can to help him out.

Dorion has managed to dovetail the mistake of over paying Joseph based an unusual short sample playing in the top 6 and not signing Pinto while he had room.

Every contract mistake costs you to get out of

There's also the option of trading Forsberg IMO. Thins out our goalie depth, likely gets us a return similar to Brannstrom?

But I'm all over Option 4, but it requires Pinto to accept signing at a discount, and that's the hang-up right now...

We don't really know the hang up or if he's been offered 2 x 2 as far as I know. If Pinto would accept that the Sens are currently not in a position to sign him to that.

have a link to that?
“ It’s believed the Senators have offered a two-year deal worth $2 million per-season and Pinto is reportedly seeking a two-year term at $2.5 million a year. Yes, a $1 million over two years is a sizeable gap, but we’ve reached another pressure point for both sides to make this happen.”

Thanks . Have to be close on the number. Now its about creating the cap space. Its been over 70 days since they signed Tarasenko and had this problem to solve.

I am hoping this gets resolved after the game tonight in the next couple of days. I think its time to bite the bullet on clearing the space and setting the lineup.

When they see Pierre's number on their phone, how hard do you think other GMs laugh?

There are only 9 teams in the league who could absorb Joseph's cap hit without sending money back. Only 11 teams could take on Brannstrom.

Out of that small group of teams, how many would even be interested in those players?

I'm sure Steve Yzerman would happily take his 1st rounder back...

This isn't accurate, any team acquiring either player would be sending down a contract to the minors adding ~800-1.15 to their cap space,

Then there are teams with LTIR room, like Florida and MTL that could potentially accomodate them. That gets you to about half the league for Brann and about a dozen for Joseph.

And we could take a contract up to 1.15M AAV back if ownership is fine with burying the contract. Lots of options.

Also, lots of teams are carrying 23 man rosters on the current cap hits, they could send an extra guy or two down and run with 22 or 21 instead, opening up even more room.

Sorry, a few additional teams could theoretically take them on. Not Florida though, since their LTIR players will return this season.

My point stands. The pool of suitors for either Brannstrom or Joseph is very limited. These aren't attractive assets that will be easy to trade.

Maybe some team will get hit by injuries and want one of them in November, but we need to move them well before then.

Downgrading our 2nd 1st to a 2nd would likely be enough of a sweetener to unload Mr. 2.95 as SOA calls him. Really what’s the harm in moving from maybe 20OA to 40OA in the annual crapshoot.

The harm is that if this team does indeed take a step this season, that 1st round pick would be a major asset that could be used to make an acquisition and further improve the team at the deadline or next draft.

Losing it to get out of a contract is brutal.

How about taking that step in October.
