??? If baseball had a bloated 8 team system like other sports these games would all mean nothing. The gap between the 8th and 9th seed is six games.

This is the perfect illustration of why a more restrictive playoff system works.

I think playoff teams should be correlated to games in season.

The NFL should have the most because the difference between a playoff team and a non-playoff team is often trivial. If you play 80+ games, there is no reason why being worse than half the teams in the league should get you a chance to win. It waters down the season.

Biggio coming back would give this team another useful weapon. Should be interesting to see whom the Jays get rid of off the 24 man.

Not sure where he fits to be honest.

Could be an Espinal sent down or an extra pitcher. To me Biggio is far more important than an Espinal. Can play multiple positions in the INF and play OF as well. Not to mention is a LH bat with some pop that we can use. Having him, Valera and Lamb on the bench is better than Espinal, Valera and Lamb.

Dyson is a main stay with late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner capabilities off the bench to steal a base here and there. There is value there as well.

or send down one of Lamb or Valera to accommodate? Probably Lamb because Biggio would take those RHP matchups.

Espinal has been easily the best hitter of those 4 players this year and is better defensively than all of them, I don't know how you can justify punting him after he returns from injury.

Yeah, of all those options (Espinal, Dyson, Lamb, Valera... and probably Biggio, the way this season has gone) Espinal is by far the most valuable one to have on the roster right now. I guess options could play a role, but if Espinal and Biggio are both healthy, it's a really easy call to put both of them on the roster and decide which of the others get the boot.

Wild to think Ryu is probably our #4 in the playoff rotation.

Have to imagine Ray or Berrios will get the wildcard game. The other gets game 1 of the divisional, and then I think I am more comfortable with Manoah right now over Ryu, though I guess it doesn't matter a whole lot which one is 3 and which one is 4

And I don't even mean this as a slight to Ryu - just simply how good Ray, Berrios and Manoah are as well

It's a weird year for the MVP race, because neither of the top 2 candidates would really have had a shot in 2019 (Bregman and Trout were better than both by a fair margin), 2018 (Betts), 2017 (Judge), or 2016 (Trout). Ohtani has had a rough couple of days and his 7.3fWAR is now only 0.8 better than Vladdy.

Here's to hoping that he turns it around so that the season can end with both guys battling for the award as opposed to someone backing into it.

If they pitch Ray every five days he gets the 20th/25th/30th and that lines him up perfectly for the WC game on the 5th.

They may also try to line things up so that they have two good pitchers available for a possible game 163 on Monday and then the Woild Card game on Tuesday.

What happens if say the Jays, Yanks and Red Socks all end up tied for the 1 and 2 wild card?

What about McGuire?

tbh this is one of the best seasons and teams i have ever witnessed for this franchise. To think that we might not even make the playoffs is a testament to the ridiculousness of MLB playoffs. This is why MLB is going to lose viewers and revenue compared to the NHL and NBA.

16 GR need to go 9-7 to make the playoffs (91-71).

Schedule:

BAL x 3
TB x 3
MIN x 7
NYY x 3

I predict we will go 9-7 in our last 16 and finish with a record of 91-71 and just might squeak into that last WC spot

2-1 vs BAL
1-2 vs TB
5-2 vs MIN
2-1 vs NYY
except that's 10 - 6 lol

What happens if say the Jays, Yanks and Red Socks all end up tied for the 1 and 2 wild card?

2 of the teams play for the 1st WC, and the loser then goes to the 3rd teams home park to play for the 2nd WC. Based on head to head Boston would get 1st pick of which spot they want and would obviously choose to host game 1. The Jays then get to pick what they want and should pick to play game 1 against Boston in Boston which if they lost they'd still get a chance to face New York in New York. But Baltimore in 2016 chose(in a scenario that didn't end up happening, they had to pick before the final day of the regular season) the 1 chance at home over the 2 chances on the road.

edit: It would be either

1) Toronto at Boston, winner gets 1st WC
Loser of TOR/BOS at New York, winner gets 2nd WC

OR

2) New York at Boston, winner gets 1st WC
Loser of NYY/BOS at Toronto, winner gets 2nd WC

and the Jays get to decide which one it is. They should clearly decide #1 to get 2 chance on the road. But in the past Baltimore chose 1 chance at home over 2 chance on the road.

You get a fun three way draft for the play-in games. There are three spots and two games

Game 1: Team B at Team A
Game 2: Team C at Winner A/B

The Red Sox would get the first pick here as they have won the season series against both Toronto/New York, with the Jays picking second.

It is an interesting concept as to whether to pick A or C.

It's Loser A/B visiting Team C in game 2. Winner of Game 1 is in already if we're talking about a 3 way tie for 2 spots.

Assuming they line it up correctly, I'd take the two chances on the road with Berrios and Ray.

This all seems dumb though. You're doing all this...just to set up another WC game?

Yeah, the reasonable thing to do I think would be to give 1 team WC1 and play off for WC2 between the other 2 teams. Boston would get 1st, the Jays would play New York at home for the other spot. If they feel that's too favorable to Boston then perhaps do the following.

Team A get WC spot #2
Team B plays team C for WC spot #1

and Boston gets 1st choice. Do they want to already be in the WC game on the road, or risk playing a play in game at home to try to get the WC game at home.

Yeah exactly - I think they should just do the normal 3 team playoff thing that I deleted above. Instead they're just burning out pitchers for semantics.

Game 1 (play-in): Team B at Team A
Game 2 (WC): Team C at Winner A/B

I never did understand why MLB is so against tie-breakers. Play 162 games with one team clearly having a better record against the other two to have it ultimately not even give them a guaranteed playoff game.

Honestly, I like the format because it puts extra emphasis on winning the division and do-or-die games are awesome.
