Exact quotes on Pettersson:

"My gut says Elias is going to want to move on. That's just my gut. Gut and a little bit of knowledge."

"As Wild fans know, if I say something it's usually because I got a...like...I don't just throw stuff out there. It's never been my style. I just think that with Pettersson, there's some behind the scenes stuff there that would probably want to make him go elsewhere."
basically a whole lot of nothingness.

You can’t say it’s your gut feeling then say “I don’t just throw stuff out there” in the same sentence

A Minnesotan journalist wouldn’t be the first person to uncover something like this. If Pettersson is not happy, Vancouver media will be the first ones to report it, not some random conference journalist.

That's incorrect.

This off-season he will have 1 year left on his current deal, but once the current deal is up he will still be an RFA. At that point he can either sign an offersheet and hope Vancouver doesn't match (in which case they get compensation likely in the form of multiple 1st round picks) or he signs his QO for 1 year or they go to arbitration and he elects the 1 year deal. At that point it would make sense for Vancouver to trade him to the highest bidder.

Either way Vancouver has full control and the ability to recoup assets on him until the TDL in 2026.
It makes sense to trade him to the highest bidder the minute they know he won't sign with them long term. Waiting just diminishes the return.

Avs should go all in for him
What do the Avs have other than Byram and picks at the very end of the 1st round? They don't have cap space for Pettersson anyway.

Does it not feel like maybe Vancouver should just burn it down? They have great assets, but a lot of them are getting into their primes, and will likely waste them through a few more years of mediocrity. You could turn some of these players into blue chip prospects and picks, and create a real contender.

It just feels like any success they've had since the Naslund days was more/less a one-off.

Not necessarily. While return may factor in length of team control, there are other factors. For instance, many teams are against the cap right now which would lessen the number of bidders and decrease the return. It may make sense for Vancouver to wait until the cap goes up significantly before moving him.

They also may believe that they can change his mind in the next year. Perhaps a coaching change or the fact that they have a bunch of big contracts coming off the books would help.

I'm not saying that Vancouver can't move him right now. I'm saying they shouldn't feel compelled to.

The problem is they should have started burning it down a couple years ago with Hughes, Petey, and Demko being the back bone. But ownership is so f***ing bad and Benning have zero back bone to stand up to them brought them to today. Canucks have about a solid decade of poor decisions. Now they are in this weird spot where you can see the future, but that future is in closer than it appears, but nothing else about the team is set up for a good future.

Russo sees how many clicks the Matthews->Arizona rumours get and he wants to drum up his own action.

Why did the thread title get changed from ‘Rumour’ to ‘Speculation’ when there is a relatively credible source involved?

Would Canuck’s do Byram, Newhook, 2023 1st for Petey?
Not until Byram can prove he’s healthy enough to play close to a full season. Because if he can’t, then Newhook and a late 1st is pretty underwhelming and would be easily beat by another team’s offer.

The little bit of knowledge is probably nothing more than what we all already know, EP wants to be somewhere he can win, and right now and with the direction the team is headed, that’s not Vancouver.
The “behind-the-scenes” part is the interesting aspect of it. It’s likely due to the issues in the locker room and personalities not meshing well (as reported by multiple credible Vancouver reporters), but I could also see it being due to management not being competent enough to assemble a competitive team and/or the allegations against Aquilini (it’s a bit demoralizing to be employed by a garbage human being).

I would start with the front office and all the assistant GM's and player development folks. Specifically ones who donned a Canucks jersey in the past.

I would look to an available former President/GM who has had somewhat recent success in building from basically scratch. The entire culture needs to be changed and get rid of Lloyd and Harry, or at least keep them away from Hockey Operations. And keep Michael and Todd out of Hockey Operations as well.

You can't have 4-5 people who claim to be "decision" makers when all they do is complain, provide no leadership and are nothing more than Yes Men to the owner.
