As a free agent? Cause if it's a trade, they would be sending salary back.
You're still taking on a much larger contract then what you currently have on your roster if you are major a sizable upgrade. Not to mention you need to have premium assets without throwing in cap dumps. Even teams like Buffalo and Detriot have to project paying Sieder, Raymond, Cozens and their other young players

At this point, Vancouver is legitimately the most dysfunctional organization in the NHL. The on-ice product sucks, the dressing room and front office have turned into the high school from "Mean Girls", and the general manager just admitted he probably should have retired before taking the job. Oh and the human rights issue, the Aquallini accusations, the COVID mess, multiple sexual assault allageations against players, etc etc etc...

Arizona still exists

How do you miss this point? Clearly Russo has some insider sources. He's not exactly an unknown name in hockey.

I think its more along the lines of theres been crickets from Drance and the other VAN beat writers.

Buffalo has $31M for 7 roster spots next year.

Project Dahlin, Cozens, JJ, Quinn, Power and that capspace disappears really quickly. Petey is signed for 1 more seaosn after this one
They can bridge JJ, Quinn, and Power at lower cap hits. Also, the cap is expected to go up. Also, at some point, an organization would value Pettersson over these other players needing new deals. They can then start trading them for picks/prospects and maintain some level of long term success.

What good teams will ahve 10+ mill in cap room to accomondate Petey? I did this excerise on the Canucks page and the answer is partically nobody who is close to being a contender
Carolina. Easily.

Obviously this season with Pacioretty being injured for the foreseeable future, we'll have a ton of money for the deadline, but beyond that to next season, Staal won't be getting 6 million anymore when we re-sign him (I wouldn't be surprised if it's about 2 million less), and Pacioretty, if we re-sign him (I suspect we will), will get a much cheaper contract than 7 million, and it will be a prove it contract after his injuries this season to show that he can still play.

If we trade KK or maybe even TT to Vancouver for EP, that frees up about 5 million from either player. Also, Kase hasn't played more than half a game this season; we can easily move on from him and save the 1.5 million or so (iirc) from him, and also move on from other depth guys like Stasny for say Drury on an ELC, etc. Then, after next season, supposedly the cap will go up.

We also have blue chip prospects (a fairly rare thing for a contender these days it seems) that Vancouver would be interested in with Morrow and Nishikin (both defensemen; a position which Vancouver really needs to improve), and whichever we don't trade, would be on an ELC and thus means saved money from the blue line when they enter the league.

This organization is truly in a good spot for this season and beyond. There's a lot of possibilities.

Canucks fans won't want to deal with this, but it's better that it happens. The sooner they get to rock bottom, the sooner they can come back from it.

I know some people think they're there, but you're not until you are forced to move your actual good players.

Sad but true.

And I think this rumour is true. I don’t think he’ll be here much longer but this management will probably wait as long as possible to trade him.

Yes – if we're talking organizational instability and volatility, the Coyotes are the top (or bottom) of the pack.

But the Canucks do dysfunctional in style. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a "noisier" organization in the game. Career-ending sucker punches, coach vs. coach fights, CBC boycotts, covid mismanagement, goalie controversies, poor staff management, assault charges, ownership human rights abuses, etc.

They are a perpetually burning tire fire.

We won't ever comeback from it until Aquaman is gone. Losing good players just makes us even worse than we are and no guarantee to get better either. Will be just another Arizona team, losing good players

It’s entirely possible that pettersen may want out after this contract ( he’s already stated he wants to win ), but saying “pettersen is GOING to want out because . . . stuff” is incredibly weak “journalism”
The bad journalism is failing to realize that he stated and wrote his piece as speculative opinion, yet everyone comes here to post it as factual, then starts trashing the actual journalist because other hockey fans have created a narrative on his writing.

Be fun to see them fully clean house - EP, Horvat, Miller, Kuzmenko, Garland. Imagine the bounty in picks and prospects. But they need to hurry up so they can maximize the tank for this draft

Uhm, you do understand Russo didn’t write any article? It was chat on a podcast.

If they lose both Horvat and Kuzmenko, he's as good as gone. That's fairly obvious though
