Player Discussion: Ehlers

Great post, and I totally agree with it's contents. I also think Ehlers is incorrectly used by Maurice. He "definitely" should be used on Power Play # 1, and also get more ice time than Wheeler, or Connor for that matter, because Ehlers can do "it all." Speed to burn - great shot as well.

Ehlers is even great on the point as a defenseman on the power play, as his shot is underrated.

Don’t look now, but Ehlers played 14:10 mins/game at 5v5 last year and Wheeler was at 14:17.

The year previous Ehlers was at 14:16 and Wheeler was at 14:08.

It’s almost as if they play the same amount at 5v5….

You can’t pick the best part of the season and say that is the real player. You have to take the whole season into account and PLD sucked. A few yrs ago there was a 2 week period when Perreault led the entire league in points or we can take Copp’s first 4 weeks from last season and say he is more than a point a game player. Great that PLD had flashes of brilliance. He better put together some consistency this year.
posters just like erasing all the bad years or performances as if it never happened. PLDs play as a Jet has been very underwhelming. Can he bounce back? of course, but call a spade a spade at least and comment objectively on his play as a Jet to-date.

Ya, I have no problem with Wheeler’s effort.
I’d even not be totally against him being the low net guy on the PP.
I know he gets his fair share of assists, I just believe that with his position as primary passer in the PP he is bound to pick up an assist most games with the chances he gets.
I’d put Ehlers as the primary passer on the half wall on PP1

i think he should be getting more ice time too especially this last year when wheeler was struggling for like 75% of the year. dont care if he is on pp1 or pp2, but pp2 was better at putting the puck in the net (given their TOI). his lack of usage at 3v3 is a bit baffling too.

Also, interesting to note the average shift lengths over the past two seasons... (for those who still think Wheeler takes excessively long shifts)

Wheeler: 49 seconds
Ehlers: 48 seconds

Very different players their similarities end with speed... IMO hard to compare...that said any team would kill to have either player and we are fortunate enough to have both of them.
I actually would prefer Ehlers.

both are fantastic offensively. Ehlers is strong as both a scorer/shooter and a passer, i think better passer/play-maker than KC. Heck, facts show he's just as productive as a goal scorer too at 5v5 hockey....

last 3 years
Ehlers 47 goals/180gp/1.11 goals per 60
KC 55 goals/209gp/1.07 goals per 60

goals per game is basically equal. then consider how much proportion of time KC gets with much superior linemates.

defensively i think KC is mostly pretty bad, Ehlers is average. think Ehlers' elite transition game helps him not play defense though, hence why his lines almost always out-shoot/chance & most importantly out-score the opposition. think the significance/importance of a wingers defensive game can be a bit overstated at time. as long as they are not a liability dont think they have to be elite defensively if they're strong offensively or in-transition. but the C on the other hand imo there is more onus on since they have more responsibilities on the D end.

Not liking running up the score 11-1 against a team like South Korea... not a big fan of Ehlers racking up 6 points in such a game either.. once it was 5-1 in the second they should have eased off. This is team Denmark inviting bad karma for the rest of the tournament.

Goal differential is a tie breaker. Absolutely you score as many as you can.

Wait - Ehlers is playing international games right now?!
Yes, Olympic qualifiers.

One game left (The decider) against Norway, who are at home.

Norway beat Korea 4-1 and Slovenia 7-4

Denmark beat Korea 11-1 and Slovenia 4-3

Denmark were up 3-0 and 4-1 against Slovenia, and for some reason let them take over the initiative and eased way off.

Denmark are better player by player and individually than Norway - Norway are better as a unit.

What Kyosama said - Also, Denmark weren't going full steam at all, Korea were just not good at all.

That and playing against South Korea helped just a little bit.
For sure - Slovenia weren't that good either - So 8 rather cheap points, but production none the less.

Denmark just played a horrible 3rd period.
Coach Ehlers said they wanted to conserve energy, and gave initiative to Slovenia, which he admitted was a mistake against a team like Slovenia.
