He's literally admitting this whole decision was based on playing with McDavid. Pretty amazing.

And he also says he knows he's okay with not playing on the same line as him, but you can't blame him for signing. The Oilers are gearing up. Kassian and Lucic on the same team! Hopefully Looch can teach zack how to play.

Replaced a 24 year old star like Hall with a 28 year old Lucic on a terrible contract. Took a step forward defensively with Larson and step back offensively. In the short term it's fairly neutral but in the long term Chia had a very bad week. Having Pulj drop to him takes away a bit of the sting.

Oilers are one of the more intimidating teams in the league now. Lucic (6'3), Kassian (6'3), Maroon (6'3), Puljujarvi (6'4), Nurse (6'5) ... I do like like that, in one year they've gone from one of the smaller teams in the league to one of the bigger ones.

I thought it would have taken at least US$500K-$1M more to get him signed. The cap space has to be used somehow...and there is still ample room to offer-sheet Matt Dumba at the same price to mess with Minnesota's cap situation.

There's no proof Lucic will fall off a cliff. He plays a physical style but hasn't been injured much. He's just a rare kind of physique

Chiarelli should've traded RNH to NJ for Larsson and not just for Larsson. Would've been good for NJ to get a number one centre.

Hall still would've been good on Draisaitl's wing.

Lucic though will be good for McDavid because McDavid brings the offensive threat, Lucic will bring the defensive threat for people who want to take McDavid down, Puljujarvi will be good for McDavid's backup plan in case he can't score the goals, and both players are good around the net for rebounds and the occasional shot.

Only thing that made me mad was the Hall trade because he both shouldn't've been traded and this was a huge shot in the foot to the entire Oilers team.

What I find interesting is how, for at least some posters, a 6 year term on a 30-year old is AOK but a 7 year term on a 28-year old is disastrous.

7 years, 42 Million for Lucic!?!

How will you pay McDavid, Draisitle, Puljujarvi in three to four years!?!

Ference - 3.25 this year

Fayne - 3.625 this year and next

That's 6.875 mil in dead cap space. Add that to McDavids current hit (including bonus) and you've got his contract (10.5 ish million per).

Pouliot - 4 mil the next 3 years

Expires the same time Pulju's ELC expires.

So we need to make room for Drai. If we clean up money in our bottom 6 by drafting and developing vs free agents, there's Drai's money.

Not a problem at all.

Anyone expecting Lucic to be McDavid's bodyguard are in for a disappointment. He can't keep his cool and will take dumb penalties when someone irritates him.

He'll be 34 the last session of the deal. Not too bad. People forget he just turned 28 less than a month ago.

Amazing that Lucic is an Oiler!

So much change in the past year to the team. Time to start winning!

They have the same contract? They also scored within 10 points of one another last year. Either both are terrible or neither is. Can't pick and choose.

Took a step forward defensively with Larson and step back offensively.

You know they still have McDavid, Draisaitl, Eberle, RNH and Puljujarvi as you note? Offence is fine.

In the short term it's fairly neutral but in the long term Chia had a very bad week.

Oilers changed the mix, sacrificed few points up front; on defence, got a whole ton better. Not sure how that's a bad week, but I'll let you explain.

You may feel that way, but most of us in EDM don't. Lucic isn't as skilled as Hall no question, but for a team thats had skill and no size or physicality for so long Lucic brings a lot more than just points.

How is Lucic 7X6.0 worse than Okposo 7x6.0? Seems like everyone is loving the Okposo deal and hating the Lucic deal.

Also, to those saying less term, do we think Vancouver/other teams weren't offering more for 6 or 5 years? If Vancouver was going to offer Eriksson 6x6.0...

It's not the dollars it's the term. They'll be better next year and the year after, maybe even be on the fringes of the playoff race now but deals like this are going to be the difference between them keeping their team together and having to offload significant pieces. Even if JP, Draisaitl and McDavid only get 20 mil or so, trouble ahead cap wise, and they are still lacking two real puck moving defencemen to be an actual contending team imo. If they sign Demers to a long term deal now, they are totally screwed.

But for their fans, after all the misery, I'm sure just having a competitive team again will be nice for a change, and I think they will be.

If they were smart would have chased skilled players instead of paying the goon premium just as fighting is disappearing from the league though. It seems like their mgmt became obsessed with fighting after McDavid went into the boards as if it was somebody gooning him or something.
