That's not been the narrative at all.
More like oilers fans emphatically stating he would sign for around 13, while everyone else said not happening while pointing out you guys will have 50 million tied up on four players.

So much for setting cap aside to win and no I don't care if he would have gotten more as a UFA, those aren't 8 year deals with a dozen teams driving up the price.

Nor do I care if Nate with inflation would be similar, one Nates a superior player and 2nd when he signed it was 100% known exactly where the cap was heading.

Sorry to rain on the parade but when you have probably the best player in history when all is said and done, you should be able to build a dynasty around that one player. The haul you guys could have got if your GM had the balls to trade #29 with an 8 year extension in place could have finally given #97 a complete team opposed to one with arguably the worst defense of any team with playoff aspirations.

I guess time will tell .
Agree on time will tell.

Can you provide an example of a reasonable deal that you think that you think the Oilers could get for Draisatl that would improve their chances in the play-off's?

Nate might be a superior player - but not sure why that is relevant because Nate is not available.

Ciao

There isn't a better use for $30 million of cap space, than 16 million for McDavid and 14 million for Draisatl.

Every single other team would be so lucky to have those deals.

I know McDavid isn't signed yet, but I can't believe that Draisatl settled his deal without knowing what McDavid would do next. It's a lock.

I always have nhl.com open and my snip tool ready.

Sounds like a fun life.

Can you do me a favour and "snip" how effective he is defensively at 5v5, specifically in the playoffs... assuming with that many points he must be helping his team win a lot at 5v5.

That's a ridiculous statement. We have a hole on our 2nd pair, right side. Other than that, our defense matches up very well.
Your defence is mid at best, if not in the lower half of the league. Ekholm is a solid top 2 D-man, but I think he will decline after this season. Bouchard is getting carried by Ekholm and is great on the PP, but if this guy is your #1 you won't be winning the cup, as his defensive game still needs a lot of work. Nurse is overpaid as we all know, and is more of a #4 at this stage. Kulak is an ok #5 and a solid #6 D-man. Emberson is still a big question mark and Idk if he is a legitimate top 4 D-man.

Stecher / Brown weren't good on a lowly Yotes team, idk how this is going to change on the Oilers...These guys are what they are. Depth D who can fill in.

"In the last 3 Playoff seasons Leon ranks:Points: 81 (2nd)Goals: 30 (T-1st)Assists: 51 (2nd)PPG: 15 (1st)"

and 1st in GA.

I am simply saying this contract might age badly and people are getting upset.

A player who is approaching the end of his prime (most likely) is signing an 8 year contract at a very large AAV.
You said he is clearly not number 2 in the league.

Sure, but the Avs won the cup when Mack was making 5.5, and haven't since his 12.6 extension.
Who was the highest paid player on a cup winner\?
In cap hit and % of the cap?
Who cares? Maybe they win, maybe they don't. They are keeping a playoff performer for his career. Mack sucked for years and his own fanbase talked about trading him. Revisionist history right here

I can help you out... he gets scored on so much that his 5v5 production ends up being irrelevant.

Not a cherry-picked stat... some people just care about the other 100 feet of ice.

I'm not sure if I agree. After the playoff and regular season that Bouchard just had, the only other things he could do to increase his stock are a Norris trophy, even higher point output next year, or a Stanley Cup. Doing what he did last year over again probably doesn't raise his stock much, if at all.

On the other hand, if he sees a regression in points down to, say, 60 points or so, that could give the Oilers some leverage to negotiate him down a bit. I think this is one of the few scenarios where waiting it out might be the better option.
You absolutely have to wait. He had a career high 45 points and was commonly and harshly and justly, roasted by his own fans on a regular basis. Signing him now is literally asking for a Nurse 2.0.

Play him like a True #1 is played, make him carry a pairing and not stapled to one line almost exclusively.
Oilers fans always shit on me saying I'm just a hater but I zero issue praising McDrai because I've watched them drag this team on their backs, I praise Ekholm all the time. For me Nurse and Bouchard if he gets anywhere North of 8 million will be contracts that actively keep the oilers from getting over the hump, especially since the team is old with nothing really in the pipeline, especially on D.

at least our stars get locked up to max term...unlike some players on some teams

Of course the downside here is that Matthews can re-sign at a lower cap hit if his play declines after 5 years, while Leon will just keep trucking along at 14m as a third line C if he does as everyone does and gets older and not as effective.

Tavares has performed basically as well as any Leafs fan could have hoped from a points perspective, but we'd all be happier if he wasnt making 11m this coming season.
