Congrats to Edm, means the window gets extended another year before 97's kicks in. Once it does though, 40M to 3 players is going to make building a contender untenable. Selling LD edm must not be easy, so its a commendable accomplishment to Bowman.

Congratulations on getting him done.

It doesn't really matter how old he will be in years 7 and 8. Or when his injuries will show the decline beginning. You had to get him signed and you did.

This deal increases the likelihood of 97 coming back, it also means he is at least a $15M per year guy. That's another $8M to $10M on the cap just to retain two guys (plus whatever Bouchard's raise is). That's a lot of stress on the cap and increases the need for young, cheap youth to become contributors.

Those are things to worry about later. For now, congratulations

Those young players will be given offer sheets, ala St. Louis...hard times are coming after McD and Bouch sign their new crazy contracts.
Salt mine is big with this guy. lol. OH no, offersheets for 2 guys who have 120 games or less combined.

I was hoping he would test UFA. But this is a fair deal for the player. He didn’t take a discount, but he isn’t overpaid either.

It is great for the oilers as it means the stars are staying together. It is hard to get players to want to play in Edmonton and to keep their elite talent is important for the fan base.

You pick that same battle for every other offensively gifted player too?

I think it is a relevant argument, but not perfect.

Being an even player is fine when he produces like he does on the PP though.

I still think the contract will suck long-term and his not being super effective at 5v5 is a reason for it.

McDavid deserves 16-17 mill*8 and will earn that contract in its entirety as long he stays healthy. Bouchard on the other hand...If this guy gets paid what I think he will, the Oilers are gonna be in big trouble.

Of course the downside here is that Matthews can re-sign at a lower cap hit if his play declines after 5 years, while Leon will just keep trucking along at 14m as a third line C if he does as everyone does and gets older and not as effective.

Tavares has performed basically as well as any Leafs fan could have hoped from a points perspective, but we'd all be happier if he wasnt making 11m this coming season.
sure but if Matthews scores another 69 goals this year or going forward, he's gonna want the bag in 2027 to the tune of MORE than 14 mil
it's why you lock up elite players to as long as you can

Yup he did not take a discount in general. Thought he would. 13.5 was my number, but he has been severely underpaid
Eh, you can’t accurately guess progression. He got a pretty good contract when he signed it. Just because he lucked out and outperformed it I don’t think he has been severely underpaid

Working out well for Calgary with Huberdeau.

There is a lot of risk in locking up elite players for as long as you can.

At a certain point, the risk is too great.

$50M on four players is going to be easily doable when you consider the cap is going to be $105M+ when McDavids new deal kicks in.
It won't be anywhere near that. Mid 90s more like it based on projections. If the new tv deal flops and the cap being tied to growth it may very stay mid 90s. We are seeing a market correction after the flat cap and the escrow issue. expecting the cap to keep going up 4+ million every season isnt very likely.

I am from Edmonton. Great city. You don't commit to 8 more years if you don't build bonds and relationships here. Especially when his fiance is an actress
All I’m saying is I lived for 6 years in NJ and travel back there twice a month. I promise you I don’t love it. But the money’s great!

I would say this is "fair value". I was thinking the Oilers would get a bit of a discount considering the comments about taking less to win, especially considering this contract will expire when he's 37 years old, but I guess it is what it is.

Tavares shouldn't have been making $11 million the last 4 seasons. He hasn't been worth that contract since his first year.

As a Panthers fan, this is great news, and I hope McD gets $17+ and Bouchbomb gets $10+, it’ll be an even better day.
Hey hopefully Bob saves the team and becomes Hasek again. Good thing you have him.
