The last three years of this contract will hurt. Leon will be 35, 36 and 37 for most of those 3 years (October birthday).
A similar player (impact wise) is Patrick Kane. Imagine paying Kaner 14 million last year, this year and next? (November birthday).
Edit.....Just to clarify....I don't see any other option here for Edmonton. Drai is absolutely needed to compete for that Cup over the next 5 years. I just think it'll hurt in the end.
You are forgetting about cap growth.
The cap is likely to be $116M in 2031
https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/202...xt=The salary cap would be,cap hit in 2022-23.
Draisaitl will be 35. His contract will be $14M/116 or ~10M in today's dollars.
A 36 year old Thornton (who, minus the one-timer, has always been my closest comparable play style to Drai) finished 5th in Hart and Selke voting.
This is the price of doing business in the NHL. McD and Drai are going to have contracts that will age similarly to Malkin and Crosby. They'll be declining in play as the cap rises. The Oilers are unlikely to be competitive in their twilight years, but that will likely be because they've continued to spend futures on present over the next 5-6 years to ensure the best chance at winning cup(s).
Oilers fans are happy with that trade off... if you are going to have contracts that age-out, it might as well be for two first-ballot HoFers.
Oilers have 9 players (7 really) in the Hockey Hall of Fame... not a single player played their entire career, or even their entire prime, in Edmonton. It would be nice to have a first "Career Oiler".
