2mil, we couldnt pay Kostin 2 fkn mil? I see the trend here, so i'm definitely in the minority, but my god is he ever worth that and then some. Ppl saying too much for a 4th liner, but he had top 9 and even top 6 potential. Still quite young, and sooo many rare attributes, and an integral part of round 1 success

I hate this, but understand it was the cost to 'dump' Yamo's contract, maybe a necessary sacrifice. But this hurts
Oilers were not signing Klim for 2x2. So he isnt really even a casualty of the Yamo trade since he was gone anyway.

Let’s say they could have negotiated for 1.8 or 2 million for Kostin. If the cap is going up, why not do a deal for 1 million this year and 2.6 million next year??

If he played badly this year and they had to move him for gods second year, it would still be a risk worth taking. 2.6 isn’t the worst amount to move.

No thank you. You seen Maroon lately?
Slow af and plays like a whiny, entitled little bitch now. Hard pass.
Yep. I was a big supporter of big rig and I wouldn't even want him now. But he wouldn't want to play here so moot point. Maroon is far more undisciplined than anything we saw in his incarnation here.

I agree 2m is too much for a team top heavy on salaries like this team. But it's false to say Yamamoto was given away for nothing. Wings clearly see value in kostin so much so they are buying out Yamamoto.

The whole narrative of dumping Yamamoto for nothing and kostin is worthless goes out the window when you see Detroit do this.

No you are right. Detroit clearly see value in Kostin. You could even argue that value = $2M plus the ~$470K (or whatever) buyout they will be paying Yamamoto against their cap during the term.

I like Kostin. And I didn't see his defensive game as terribly poor, in fact 1.9 GA/60 at 5v5 says it can't be terrible, but we didn't have $2.5M for this player.

Then add in the Brown contract for a much more known quantity, but with a big injury question mark... and at league min this year. It is obviously designed to max our cap space THIS YEAR.

Anyway, the jury is out whether Holland (and Woody) made the right call here... but the most important thing (and I've been harping on this all off season), is that they better make use of that cap space and to me that means saving some (to mulitply) at the deadline.

On paper this team is better today than it was last October (and certainly than it was last July)... what matters is what they can do between now and the deadline. That's the finish line for building this squad in my opinion.

Yeah. Can't even fathom how somebody would look at it just the one way. Due to the scoring and intangibles its obvious Kostin was worth the 2M asking price. just that the Oilers couldn't pay it due to several other overpays made. Sucks we lose the player. Now confirmed that Kostin got his asking price. Good for him. IMO he's value at that price.

The way I imagine Holland and co must have been looking at it:

Option A: Kostin @ $2M + Yamo buyout* at ~$470 per season + sign Brown at $750K** = ~$3.23M cap this year
Option B: Trade both + sign Brown at $750K and keep a league spot for Lavoie/Bourgault/AHLer = $1.5M against the cap

It's obvious Option A is preferable on the ice in October... but that extra $1.7M in cap space in Option B (if we manage to save it) becomes $8M at the deadline. (or is the annual difference between a 1 year vs 4 year bridge for Bouchard)

... at least that's how I hope they are looking at it.

* I assume here that Holland didn't have another team lined up to trade for (and buyout) Yamo. And if they did, the cost in pick(s) was greater than losing a player they value but could not come to terms with (Kostin).

** Fully realize we have to deal with up to $3.25M on the cap next year... honestly I hope it all accrues to next year's cap, that means we'll have maxed out this year at the deadline. This is what "going all in" looks like.

The did not have cap space to sign him for $1.8M this year.

What are the actual conditions for Brown's bonuses. Does his cap hit automatically become 4M if he plays say 65 games?

Shite. So it's basically a 4M signing.

Quite literally robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Many are blaming Holland for sticking it to the next GM (Staios?), but
1) Cap goes up next year, that much we know
2) (Assuming we get Bouchard for at least two years), all or nearly all of our core are locked up, but...
3) Next summer Draisaitl has a decision to make
4) So we HAVE TO BE ALL IN THIS YEAR
5) And a $4M guy for $750K based on a creative structure is just a symptom of that

What's the point of putting a condition if it's only 10 games? And yes I understand the cap gets moved to next year but that f**ks us over even more
