Is Nurse truly a goner though? Who is going to take him off your hands, really? What kind of trade involving Nurse do you expect to happen?

There is an entire thread on this very subject.

Much better offensively and defensively and he’s younger. He doesn’t need to repeat last years numbers to earn his salary.

I don't know about that second part. Still, I feel that was a good sign and trade for the Leafs.

Consider Dickinson and Murphy solid depth pieces the Oilers needed to get signed. If you're of the mind Stan Bowman overpaid I invite you to revisit this thread 2 minutes after the opening of Free Agency.

That is where the insanity will happen.

Unless Kucherov is coming to Toronto with him he isn’t repeating 70 points, and before that he was a 30ish point number 4 who somehow managed to be a minus on the Lightning. That is to say nothing of being a no-show in the playoffs.

You hate the Oilers, we get it, but not every one of their players sucks and is bad.
That’s just a very poor and biased take. The Raddysh contract is a couple of years too long but he’s a top pairing guy who was in high demand. It’s not hating on Oiler players to point out how much better Raddysh is than Murphy. Most reasonable people would agree with that.

It’s a fair cap hit for a very good defensive defenseman who adds nothing offensively for next year. But the term again is brutal.

The guy is 33, he could fall of a cliff at any moment.

The average age of the Oilers top 6 dmen next playoffs will be 32.

I don’t think he overpaid on Murphy but did on Dickinson. I don’t think he had any other choice because of his prior decisions of letting young talent walk and having a lot of poor contracts on the team that handcuffed him. Like Nurse, Walman, Frederic and Jarry.
The question now is whether he can actually improve the team over last years. He doesn’t have a lot of cap space and as you say prices will be high. Plus his track record is to put it kindly not great.

Not to mention the team signing him had cap space. The team signing Murphy does not.

Honestly, the next two years is all that matters, who cares about term beyond that. Cap hit is fine for the next two years though he could fall off a cliff if speed declines.

Granted if McDrai drag you to a cup, and McDavid re-signs, you're going to regret having a 36 year old Murphy, but that's a different issue.

Here's my question though- what was the negotiation Murphy and Dickinson like. 5x$4.1 and 5x$4.0. Who successfully grounded the other down? Did Dickinson quit too early. Kind of random that two teammates got nearly identical contracts, but one was deemed marginally more valuable.

Also, $7M to go with 4-5 players needed including a platoon goalie. Assuming they go three of those for $2.5M combined, and keep $1M for a deadline addition, that leaves $2.5-$3.5M to solve their d problem, or move Nurse.

That should work out fine.

He’s literally getting TWICE as much money
He’d better be twice as better

You think Jarry and a platoon goalie is fine for a team on the clock with McDavid?
And they lost in the first round to the Ducks. Shouldn’t the goal be to improve the team and not just maintain the status quo. I don’t see how they have enough cap space to do that.

Oilers are truly only getting him for 3 years where he has the NMC.. They will ship him out afterwards ala Kulak, Ceci etc

oh, that was definitely sarcasm.

Edmonton shelling out 40.5M and 10 years between Dickinson and Murphy is crazy business; along with MASSIVE trade protection to boot.
Nah, its just taking care of business. The 2 filled big holes on the team.
The Oiler now have 7.4M even with Nurse and Jarry's full cap to find a goalie and sign Dach (RFA).

As someone who hates the Oilers, nothing wrong with this deal. Low AAV for a top 4 d-man during their Cup window, and then dumpable following it. Or, can be kept around for veteran presence with a rising cap. Solid deal.
