He’s a legit top 4 dman for 4.1 million, and his contract is structured where you can dump him after he turns 35. This is a great deal

The issue I see here is more than the term for an injury prone player just feels like it's a live grenade of a contract. It should create a good 2nd pair with Walman-Murphy if Walman doesn't suck again next year and Murphy stays healthy. But those are 2 pretty big ifs between Murphy staying healthy and Walman bouncing back.

I like it. Agree with most that we have a 2 year window that is closing fast. After that we are one old trash team with a lot of NMCs. Decade of darkness is coming.

But, for next season the team is looking to be taking team defence and the PK seriously.

Murphy is exactly what we've needed. A NMC sucks. 5 years sucks. Him being 33 sucks.

But 4M for next 2 seasons is great.

Its more the age thats the issue. At his age, his play could fall off a cliff halfway through the first year of the deal. Its not a lock, but its not an outlandish possibility either.

Why are they doing this

They have needed a defenseman like Murphy for a decade. They are competing now. Could this age poorly? Yep, absolutely. It probably will. But this is a pretty risk free signing for the time period the Oilers are wanting to be contenders.
