Marchand the plug is at least 75x the player Murphy/Dickinson/Frederic are.

This is what Edmonton is selling McDavid for a long term extension.

At least Murphy makes sense at the salary but the term is wild.
Yeah i saw how he stepped up and willed florida into fighting for the 1st overall pick all year. Im sure he will get even better into his 40s

On a 1-2 yr deal, fine. At 5 years, you're telling McDrai that "this is who we are hitching the wagon to for your final prime years".

This excludes Nurse.

We are in trouble IMO. This leaves us 7M with Nurse's contract it could be as high as 17M give or take.

Optimisit:

More than happy with Top 6. one of best in league IMO
More than happy with Top 4D
3C is great for next 2 years.
Howard should stick and hopefully get around 12 a night and keep improving. He's a Wildcard to move up lineup like Savoie did.
Samanski should be 4C and also has potential to move up lineup.. he had a busy year of learning.. AHL, best on best Olympics, NHL regular, NHL playoffs and World Championships. That is a lot of experience!

Realist:
Bowman still GM
Babcock is coach!?!?!?!
Katz still owns us?
Walman, Ek and Murphy tend to get hurt
Bouch got his brains scrambled and could start being injury proned himself
Stastney, Regula and Embersson are not 100% bets (Embersson being best bet)
Our G situation has to be the worst in the NHL? Add in Campbell for 2.6M as well! Almost 8M for Jarry and no backup.lol
Dickinson helps with bottom 6 identity but Frederic remains to have to prove he's not useless and can stay healthy. Not sure about Janmark after a year off. Howard won't get much done with those linemates. Dach is hurt often too. I don't think Hutson becomes an NHL regular. Maybe Raty steps up? I liked Clattenburg but is like Dach and will probably get hurt a lot too (hope I'm wrong).

No matter how optimistic I try to be I see Bowman and his acquisitions sinking us! Jarry at 5M is a killer. Frederic at 4M is a killer. Walman at 7 could hurt as early as Halloween (I hope not and am high on the player to be honest).

I just don't like it at all.lol I think we were getting close but are getting further.

The NURSE trade looms large. Lots of cap space and sign a formidable current NHL player and it might improve.

I don't see a problem with the actual value of Murphy's (and Dickinson's) new deals with Edmonton. Don't think they'll age great, but for the next couple of seasons, the years where McDavid is currently under contract, the deals are fine (so long as they remain relatively healthy through that time).

The bigger issue I feel for the Oilers is that they still need to sign at least 6 more players (preferably 7) and they have roughly 9m left to spend. And you'd hope they learned their lesson about having Jarry as their starter, so then they also probably need to spend for a half decent netminder. They might be able to make it work if they can manage to trade Nurse and not take a ton of cap back in that deal, but signing Murphy and Dickinson to $4m (ish) contracts could complicate their ability to improve the roster elsewhere later on (specifically in net).

this is a bit of a premium from what projections were but oilers were probably smart to get it done anyway.

idk what other RD they could possibly have gotten that wouldnt have cost about as much and been lateral or a downgrade.

The signings are fine and while the term is too long it’s only the next 2 years that matter The bigger issue is that they’re essentially bringing back the same gang that got knocked out in the first round with no improvements and little cap space to do anything even with a rising cap.
The D is really old and the goaltending is really bad. What’s the plan for improving that?
I can’t imagine that McDavid is feeling very good about this, especially as he watches the top contenders take advantage of the rising cap to improve.

If you are looking at the near term a good deal. Very important to that team that they got it done. Brown, right now, is a player they need and the price point for them was good. Makes last years trade look like a very good one.

its only June. Also McDavid dragged the team down in playoffs so he can be unhappy with himself.
Oilers need a goalie and a new coach. rest of the roster can remain the same and McDrai will be 'happy' until trade deadline where they could load up a bit.

It just seems weird to offer these deals and have them get signed when there is a week+ left until FA.

I could be off base but the more they press against the cap, the more other GM’s will understand how pressing it becomes to get Nurse off of the team.

Like I said, I knew the Oilers were in trouble cap wise but don’t know for sure how these smaller deals impact future decisions.

Worst case scenario for them is having to unload Nurse out of desperation to get under.

With respect, that roster isn’t nearly good enough and it showed last year. They need two nhl goalies a couple more D and some scoring depth after the top 2 lines. And have very little cap space and a GM with a very poor record of being able to fill holes.

Its essentially the same core roster that went to back to back stanley cup finals, theres a lot of luck involved in winning in the playoffs. Unless we are saying florida is suddently a garbage team too for not even coming close to making a playoff spot?

its good enough to cruise into a playoffs spot again. Oilers need to give Howard, Emberson etc a shot before adding upgrades.

They also would need to find homes for Jarry and Nurse if adding a LD and a goalie. Should happen but not in June 2026... just before March 2027

As for Murphy, I would take him at 4x5 instead of 5x4. Gives EDM a tad more cap flexibility.

The 33 year old part. The part where they need a goalie. The part where they need to use cap space for an impactful player?
That team needs a bottom six, defense and goaltending the most. Those are where the holes are most glaring. They paid the price they did at the deadline because these two guys are exactly the kind of players they need, and they needed to keep them. I think AAV’s are appropriate, they had to pay the Edm tax to keep them there and had to add a year of term to get it done. I don’t think they care what happens after McD leaves. They have two years to do something. They needed these two.

People always want the “impactful” player. Edm has so many holes they need NHL level players even more than the “impactful” guy. Adding a top six winger without fixing the bottom half of the roster does nothing to get them a cup.

He fits the Oilers like a glove, and it showed by how awesome he looked here. Tough as nails and just a rock back there.

If his play falls off, we'll just LTIR him I'm sure. At 4 million he wouldn't even be bad as a lower minute guy to anchor the bottom pairing in a couple years

No it’s not the same roster. The D was already old and now it’s even older and injury prone. Ekman has really regressed. They’ve lost more scoring depth and have even worse goaltending. It’s a wildcard team at best even in the weak Pacific.
Florida is adding both Barkov and Tkachuk. They are not a very good example to use.

They were a bottom 5 team and tkachuk played half the year. Also older and more injury prone, terrific example.

They made the playoffs by a couple of points last year. I don’t see them cruising in next year with several teams improving.

Term is irrelevant when going all in, look at florida and contracts for plugs like marchand

Great deal, edmonton easy favorites for cup next year
Marchand isnt a plug, Unlike Murphy and Dickinson, Marchand is a very good player who had a very good cup run for florida and was a PPG player this season...what are you talking about

A whole lot of doom n gloom.

Oilers have 7M+ to spend on a goalie. This includes Nurse and Jarry on the squad with full cap hits.

They had 3 big holes to fill. 3C, top 4 RD and a #1 goalie.
2/3 are done. Stan is moron but he got the job done this week.
Babcock is just a new face that this team needed. It could very well have been Dallas Eakin and the team wouldve gotten a jolt.
Katz has been letting the GM spend to cap so not sure what more you want from the owner

fans want a shiny new toy for sure but the team doesnt really need one.

Just get a goalie and lets start rocking.

Edmonton shelling out 40.5M and 10 years between Dickinson and Murphy is crazy business; along with MASSIVE trade protection to boot.

Price of business for non Vegas, Florida, TB, Dallas etc teams unfortunately.

Don’t get me wrong Chiarelli, Holland and Bowman are terrible. But no one’s coming to Edmonton for cheap even with McDavid and Draisaitl.

Did a Flames fan buy the Oilers in secret and start running the team? Because this is just getting f***ing hilarious
