Did the Blues create $3M of cap space for themselves with the Kostin for Samoroukov trade?
The Oilers didn't really create 3M of space either. They created whats left on a contract coming off the books anyway. So that they can bring in a 3M buck player. But as of right now we don't know the incoming and what that looks like. I should reserve judgement but its harder to do that today. In anycase the parallel is both teams giving up bonafide NHL players for non NHL players. I'm not too keen on that as a strategy. Can't say I'm really trusting Holland to bring in something good. Theres been a lot of misses in players he's brought in.

Much like Kostin in St. Louis, Jesse wasn't going to put it all together here. He had ample opportunities and it didn't work out. Best of wishes to him going forward and I hope that Holland makes the most out of the cap space that we just gained.

This is Puistola, in case you guys thought you were actually getting rid of some forehead in this trade. Nope. Sorry. You guys still have lots of forehead.

That article suggests it was a comical trade from us. It clearly isn't in terms of context. We've essentially freed ourselves of 3M worth of cap space to make an upgrade to the roster.. how is that comical?
meh. I tend to ignore stuff like that as a large part of media and pundits have Oilers envy and hate due to Gretzky, McD, Draisaitl and so on. To be honest I looked off that entirely. Fair comment.

I don't think anyone is kidding themselves. The OIlers traded for cap space without having to give up a draft pick. That's the real story.
The misleading headline says otherwise. That the Oilers traded for Puistola FROM Carolina. Thats misleading for obvious reasons. Normally a headline would be trade for a prospect. Not the inference that it was a player that was in the lineup for Carolina.

Is it? No one wanted Pulju for more or we would have gotten more. We can better use Puljujarvis cap than a guy who plays sub 10 minutes.

Bear was worse in Carolina than he was here so he could easily be worse there.

Holland offered to resign Pulju and he said no. Rather him clear space and bring in a defender than have a “good” player that plays 9 minutes a night holding up 3 mill of cap.
Where you getting this from?

What good player are we getting in for 3M. I'll believe it when I see it. Not a moment sooner. Holland hasn't earned that kind of benefit of doubt unfortunately.

In anycase we axed the player leading team in hits and making a bottomsix contribution instead of a pint sized nothing burger that exists only to squander chances on toplines in close games. With that player making more money and term. If Yama is gone immediately then I revise that opinion. But for now it seems like headcoach is in GM ears and I don't trust the headcoach opinion as far as I can spit. We lost a player, and we kept a player that is far worse.

Yeah. This trade was just to dump Pulju to the Canes really for nothing. Puistola was just some ink on the paper. 99,99% chance the Oilers will not sign him and just let his rights expire.
Not sure about that. He sure will be ok in AHL and if there is no problem with 50 signs I would sign him.

This guy doesn't seem to realize Oilers were desperate to create cap space and bring in a player of higher impact. Holland better not fk this up now that he has some decent cap space to work with. Find Yams a new home too while he's at it.

Classic "I'm the smartest one in the room" douche tone from the hardcore analytics community.

Analytics have grown on me, but the arrogant "my shit doesn't stink" attitude that their public proponents exude hasn't.

At the end of the day we moved a 3mill 4th liner. We could still move Yamamoto, in fact it’s likely.

Holland just did a presser. He stayed he talked to Pulju two weeks ago and said they would not be giving him a qo (not worth over 3mill) but was willing to sign him to a one year extension starting with a 1. Pulju and his agent said they rather move on.

Sad day, the team got worse today.

But good for Jesse to move on from here, it's clear Jay was done with him, it sounds like he was done with us. It was a move that was bound to happen. Jesse is a quality 3rd line/4th line guy though, one of the best you'll find in the league. He just never reached the top six potential we hoped for.

Puistola isn't a great skater, I doubt he becomes anything. 4th liner maybe.

I hope we clear more cap space for moves this summer - and don't do anything stupid before Friday.

On many other teams Pulju is a thirdliner. Coach here made him a limited minutes 4th liner. The player was drastically misused under Woody and was much better utilized by Tippett and with demonstrably better commensurate results.

I don't think its likely at all we move Yama. Coach loves him. Thats the tea leaves I'm reading. Nah, we're stuck with Yama. We WOULD have to buyback that contract and we can't. I mean who would take Yamamoto at 3.1M and term? That would require bigger idiot theory.

At the end of the day it’s better to move the player your coach dislikes more. That’s just how it is, and I’m sure you know that.

Do explain this. What does "really creating cap space" mean to you?

The first and third sentence seem pretty contradictory to me. Is there something I'm missing or are you just being pissy for the sake of it?

Not pissy Jim;)

Just that theres little benefit served in anycase waiting this long to do this. Only 20 games left in schedule and on Pulju contract. Like some others have suggested if the idea was to move Pulju anyway it would have been easier off of say last season results before we got a headcoach that essentially stapled the player to the bench the last year. Pulju was an appreciable asset with upside when Tippett was still here. We sold low. Worse the team devaluated the asset, then sold low for nothing. The capspace argument is easy to make but it also can be used as excuse to defend basically any asset management or allocation.

We need players on ice. Nobody ever bought a jersey that says capspace on it. ;)

Holland better have a huge positive move with the help of this cap space.

Wish Jesse the best. Probably the most ideal team for him to go to.

So you're just saying you don't understand how this works. Fair enough.

Last night's game SHOULD be the last straw for Yams.. he's ineffective in a lot of areas of the game. If the team is looking to contend, he's the kind of player that should be packaged out for an upgrade or at the very least a useful player in return. He has to be moved imo whether it's the TDL or off season.

If the coach was credible even in the slightest I could see this. If the coach is among the worst headcoaches in the league I can't. No. Woody gets no benefit of doubt from me either and isn't earning it.

I don't think the head coach has much of a clue.
