all honesty though this is a great little deal, hilarious they got ANA to retain as well. Didn't realize he was that slow, hopefully he can pick things up in that department with EDM.

The only downside of this trade is that we gave Anaheim a little more capspace to try and get deals done on both Vatanen and Lindholm.

This is a very good point. Freeing up cap space was obviously part of the game plan for Anaheim with this deal.

I don't think 1.5 mil for 1 year will make vat suddenly signable. The cap issues stem from guys like kesler signed long term, or even getzlaf + Perry making a ton.

I think it opens dialoug tho for a trade

But the flip side of that is while Maroon has had a poor season the two previous years he had spent quite a bit of time in their top 6. With him gone their LW depth is Perron, Cogs, McGinn, Ritchie. Ritchie hasn't shown anything and they will likely want to try and retain Perron for sure and possibly McGinn. Re-upping those two likely negates and cap savings from dealing Maroon.

Bingo. I didn't think about this until Chia said this this past weekend and I think this is more important at the trade deadline than trying to make a big splash.

It's amazing how things change when you go from 2 or 3 inexperienced GM's to a veteran GM that knows what he's doing.

I would like Vatanen to be available as well but I have trouble believing that Anaheim wont try to retain their promising young players.

I look at it as part of a plan which for them includes shedding salary. Thats not something you do all at once.

That being said I like how the Oilers will be positioned at the draft. Plenty of ammo and cap space allowing for some interesting possibilities.

I don't see the Ducks helping out the Oilers blueline. This is probably the only favour we're going to get.

Anaheim definitely will want us as a trading partner this summer considering that we are primed to make huge moves this offseason and we'll have a lot of cap space. A smart GM would make a couple moves with us right now to get those conversations started.

It's a bit rough to make a core-shifting move within the division though. I would very much prefer to deal with the east. Still, we need to keep our options open.

Everyone is too civil and unified about acquiring a player.

i don't like the move very much, if you are looking for dissenting voices, lol... i think its a move we look back on in 2 years and say "he just couldn't mesh with our existing players who weren't able to play the cycle game very well"

although i must admit, knowing that we are only paying him 1.5 vs 2 sure does help a bit

You'd rather have Gernat and a 4th?

They didn't give up much for this player who SHOULD be an effective 3rd line player.

I respect your opinion and he may not fit in, but it's worth the risk for what they gave up. His contract isn't a big issue since it's $1.5 mil and expires before the McDavid bomb drops in 2018.

I don't like this as much as many here do but it is nice to see a fan base generally disappointed with losing the guy we are getting.

I think he has struggled a bit this year. Is slow. And the Ducks had superior players plus wanted some cap space.

He could easily end up being for us what he was for them. An expensive fourth liner.

Let's hope he has success here and he certainly adds some nice size.

1.5M is pretty easy to bury in the minors either way. Pretty low risk move that might work out pretty well for us. If he can replace Letestu on the powerplay this could be huge lol

I'm pretty sure maroon is worse than flapjacks but I guess we will see. He's still a good add.

I get the feeling this trade is part of a summer deal too.

oh i agree that its "worth the risk"... he is an actual NHLer, and we gave up magic beans to get him... plus he is signed to a fair deal after the 25% retention is taken into account... i just don't think its the "grand slam" that most people think it is... i think he will end up being a serviceable 3rd or 4th liner, but likely won't find much chemistry with our "big guns"

this is what i see him end up being as well, but at 1.5 its not THAT expensive, a little on the dear side, but not crazy or anything... i think he'll likely split his time between the 3rd and 4th line, and maybe get some top-6/2nd PP time if injuries hit

Even with the deals today, the Ducks have 14 guys under contract next season for $52.65mil. They have RFA's in Rakell, Andersen, Vatanen and Lindholm with 18.7mil in cap space. So even then it's gonna be a tight squeeze.

We got a 3rd for Schultz.

And got Maroon at 75% for Gernat and a 4th.

I think people would have been ecstatic with a Schultz for Maroon move. This is great.

Yah no doubt, this guy is a heavy player. Perfect for the PP screen. I don't think Chia got this guy for the 4th line, he has a really good shot and soft hands. Also is fairly tough and can take the body pretty well. At 1.5 per you take this guy all day long.
