Larkin wants in the $70,000,000 range, And since you can only do 7 years look at $10,000,000 per to sign Larkin and $9,000,000 per for Meier. yeah good luck with that.
You misunderstood me. They (TNT) were arguing that either one of Larkin or Meier would be a good fit on Carolina. They weren't saying we will, or should get both players, and neither was I. Getting both would be fantastic, but it's not gonna happen.

Stats suggest he’s actually overrated defensively. “Rock solid” is too much.

And someone who can’t manage a ppg in this high scoring era doesn’t deserve something that starts with a 9.

Edit: Over the last 4 seasons - theoretically all of his prime so far - he’s 77th among forwards in ppg. A $9M contract would make him the 16th highest paid player. That’s insane.
Perhaps. But it’s likely his agent is looking beyond this/next year when the cap starts to increase. Agents are determined that their clients don’t take a haircut in 2026 because of circumstances in 2023.

Also, it’s not like he doesn’t have leverage. How do they replace him? Would that player cost almost as much in free agency? Then you cinsider the value of his captaincy. How much is that worth? Is it worth losing your captain to replace him with a similarly priced player?

Never happens. Giroux didn’t do it. Larkin won’t do it.
It's happened several times. Giroux didn't do it because the Flyers were going the wrong direction and he wanted to play closer to home. Tkachuk and Recchi both did it when they were traded away from teams who were trending up.

Detroit has some good young pieces and is his home team. If he gets traded I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him sign back in Detroit.

It could be a very smart idea, but only if they feel they could sign him back in the summer.

The big brain move would be to discuss a big extension with him, so an effective compromise deal like 8 million or 7.5 or whatever number Yzerman thinks is fair, and then trade him to a team with no cap space going forward, and so no ability to keep him.

At the ASG during a bench interview Larkin said playing with Marner has been the highlight of his trip.

Maybe he was being sarcastic and doesn’t like Marner or…..

Maybe he’s dropping a hint that he’d waive his nmc to play with Mitch and his countryman in T.O.

Bieksa just brought it up again.

Would be nice to see Marner at Red Wings jersey.

The 8th year is overrated. Fans/pundits frame it almost as if a player will just play that year for free. Team X will have to pay Y per year for the player to match total contract value.

A soon to be 34 year old Dylan Larkin should make good money on an extension or the open market at that time, barring a catastrophic decline/injury. His loss shouldn’t be $8 mil+.

The ones who returned to the trading away team were 30+ vets near the end of their careers who had wife and kids settled in the community.

for example say buffalo fades from the playoffs this month , thry coukd trade Okposo to a cup favorite and he comes back to buffalo snd signs a 1 yr.

Buffalo go Moulson fir Vanek+ picks. Sent him for picks to minnesota at deadline and he returns and resigns a multi year contract

Term is insurance in case the player falls apart. That extra year is money in the bank.

Having to go back decades to find a couple guys that did it is definitely not often.

Doug Weight went right back to St. Louis after winning the Cup with the Canes in 2006 too.

It's fair to note that Tkachuk, Recchi and Weight, were 35+ when they went back to their prior teams. IIRC, Weight signed for a 2 (or 3?) years, Recchi signed a 1 year deal back in Pittsburgh, and Tkachuk signed a 2 year deal back in Stl.

These were all guys in the later stages of their careers not looking for high dollar, long term deals.

I'm not saying it won't happen with Larkin, but a 26 year old looking for a high dollar, long term deal is a bit of a different situation.

If (and it’s a big IF )the Wings can’t figure it out with him…hmmm

I would die inside and vomit for months
