If he isnt signed by March 3rd...trade him

Can not see him raising his value or SY increasing his offer between March 3rd and July 1st.

Can not allow him to pull a Tavares and walk with no return.

So either agree on the numbers in next month or just move him.

He has a NTC but I believe that can be managed if req'd

The return would be
- at least 1x first rd pick
- high end center prospect
- salary dump
If Larkin pulls a Tavares doesn't he sign with [checks notes] Detroit?

The disrespect?

Have you ever negotiated your pay with a new employer before? This is how it works, it's business.
Absolutely nothing about this situation is disrespectful.
Yes that is in fact disrespect. If put in a lot of time, dedication, and leadership but I don’t get what I deserve then I find a better job. If you are truly respected for you contribution management will not let you walk and in fact go over the top to keep you.

It’s no Tom Brady situation where Larkin is giving a discount for championship.

Plus this isn’t a new employer where managers need to guess your dedication and talents…. They’ve had him for years as their captain. They know the worth he brings.

So not offering a guy more money than you feel he is worth, because he feels he is worth it, is disrespect now? You live is a safe bubble bud.

These guys all put in time, dedication and leadership, they also get compensated for those efforts. It's part of the job description, so lets not act like Larkin is going above and beyond here. He's a mediocre leader when compared to his peers and he's a good C but not a great one.

The drama you portray is too much. And as the kids used to say "He's not all that and a bag of chips"

Ok, since he is such a mediocre player and doesn’t deserve that extra 10% or year, I really hope for Larkin’s sake he gets to walk. You can be happy with your futures and all the savings as a couch GM.

I'm not so emotionally invested in a child's game that it makes me lose sleep at night. So sure!

if that's your guiding business philosophy then of course their is no room for caveats ?

So if Larkin demanded 20m a season, I know that's absurd, but the principal if it is in fact a hatd and fast principal, must remain intact.

DL deserves to be the teams highest paid player at the moment, but it's not a blank cheque.

That's not a respect or disrespect thing.. it's a talent and ability thing..

At the ASG during a bench interview Larkin said playing with Marner has been the highlight of his trip.

Maybe he was being sarcastic and doesn’t like Marner or…..

Maybe he’s dropping a hint that he’d waive his nmc to play with Mitch and his countryman in T.O.

Bieksa just brought it up again.

If (and it’s a big IF )the Wings can’t figure it out with him…hmmm

When Steve inherited the Detroit roster, he was grim about how long it would take Detroit to rebuild. Like insultingly grim. Fans didn’t like hearing that but we all assumed he wasn’t really including the likes of Larkin in that assessment.

Now I wonder if he *was* including Larkin in that assessment and recognized that Larkin can’t carry an offense before fans were ready to admit it, and now Steve is simply treating Larkin as the player he thinks he is: a 2A center asking for $9M.

Remember: Steve is the GM who played chicken with Stamkos to the point of letting him walk to free agency and get wined and dined by Toronto because he didn’t agree with Stamkos’ salary demands. He might just stick to his guns on Larkin and face the music if he can’t be signed by the deadline. He doesn’t have the luxury of risking getting nothing for him like he could with Stamkos as the GM of Tampa.

Larkin would thrive behind Mackinnon.
I agree with almost all of this and it makes sense except for the Stamkos comparison; simply because resigning in Tampa was easier to do given the city, taxes and more importantly the core already in place that were equal or better than him at the time.

If Larkin had Hedman, Kucherov, Vasilevsky, Point and others signed I think it’s already a done deal.

It’s simply hard to play hard ball for Yzerman than it was in the past given the current roster buildup and taxes.

Good response though!

Larkin is a terrific player, but it definitely feels like he’s a step below that Zibanejad/Point tier.

He’s similar to Horvat for me in being one of those guys you need to go deep in the playoffs, but you really should be paying them top line money. Larkin at 9+ million seems extremely steep for him. Should ideally come out to around between 7.5-8, although with the cap likely to skyrocket upwards soon, going above that may not be a bad scenario.

Yzerman seems to be a pretty smart hockey guy who is willing to stubbornly stick to his guns. Have a feeling he’s not going to budge and it’s going to be hard to pass up the ransom that a team like the Hurricanes would trade him for. Not to mention he seems to be exactly what Carolina needs.

That’s an assumption that he wouldn’t be a rental.

He can agree to be moved only to places he wants with the nmc. That means dubas and any other gm of a team that Larkin would want to go to don’t have to overpay to the wings.

Either the wings give him what he wants or leaves on his terms. He has all the power at the deadline and if he goes to ufa.

Can't blame him. Larkin got to play with a legit star talent, something the Wings haven't had for basically all of Larkin's career. Even when he played with HHOF guys they were half retired

Considering TNT's broadcast team recently said during an intermission of the Carolina-Buffalo game that Larkin (and Meier of course) would be a good fit for Carolina, it's not just the Canes fans that think Larkin would be a good fit here. He'd be a huge, and needed improvement to our 2C.

Having Aho and Larkin as our top 2 centers for years would be incredible.
Larkin wants in the $70,000,000 range, And since you can only do 7 years look at $10,000,000 per to sign Larkin and $9,000,000 per for Meier. yeah good luck with that.

Stevie Y struggling to sign guys when they don't take 10-20% discounts because of state taxes

Why would anyone take a 10-20% discount to avoid having to pay 2-10% state income tax? Also, you pay taxes based on where you play, so if you play an away game in NY, CA, NJ or where ever you pay state taxes on income paid for playing that game. Also, many players aren't American citizens and pay taxes to their home countries, almost every one of those countries have higher income taxes than the US and almost all of them credit income taxes paid in the country you work in, so its not like they are getting a break there anyway. This only really helps players that are US citizens that reside solely in FL year round.

Stars, Panthers… also low income tax states

Boston is a high income tax state

Maybe, just maybe, players giving discounts has more to do with winning than taxes.

And it sure is hard to ask Larkin to take another discount for what looks to be several more years of rebuilding.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him traded as a rental only to sign back with Detroit in free agency.

Ever heard Panama papers? And how much taxes Donald Trump payed when he lived in New York? 300 bucks a year? This whole tax thing is most overblown theory in hockey, smart accountant will fix everything.

Stevie Y won't budge in front of a player and his agent, like boy wonder did.

Michigan has a 4.25% flat tax for income. So even at 10 mil a year, 41 home games is 225k in state income tax. Not counting any deductions/tax sheltering maneuvers. City of Detroit has an additional 2.4% rate (1.2% for non residents) so another 60k. Larkin isn't getting 10m a year, so all in all combined state and city income tax comes out to less than 300k annually for the 41 home games.

And that assumes he's doing his taxes the worse way possible (not utilizing any tax avoidance methods).
