Jets would probably let Dubois go and bank on Montreal suuuucking again this upcoming season to give massive value to that first round pick.
I'm not familiar with the 2024 draft prospects but I'm not entirely conviced Mtl would be a bottom 5 team if you add a guy like Dubois. It would 100% be a gamble.

Yeah. Plus Matthews, Marner, and Nylander were further along. But imagine if Montreal hits it big on several of their young players. Suddenly there are a lot of hungry mouths to feed.

Maybe instead of the hometown discount, Montreal should be insisting on a contract without a NMC/NTC?
My biggest concern with the Habs accommodating a trade for PLD (and giving up assets) is the requirement to sign him to a 8M+ longterm contract. Inevitably it would include a NMC and with PLD's flakiness, could be an unmitigated disaster.

The smart play is to stay the course, give Dach the 2C role, and see where they stand next offseason. No need to do an unforced error with PLD.

I just hope Hughes plays this smart. He has young guns, some of which will break out, and will need to get paid.

Avs would be crazy not to jump on this opportunity, even if its for a rental.

Of course. Cape Breton opted to shop their superstar forward around because, y'know, reasons or something. And it's completely a coincidence that Dubois went from underperforming in Cape Breton that year to excelling in Blainville-Broisbriand.

I think the only thing more sickening than PLD's acts are the handful of Habs fans trying to be his unpaid PR staff so they don't feel like they're picking up an asshole.
Wanna know what's "sickening" overdramatic posters who conpletely twist reality so that it conforms to their narrow-minded and prejudiced view.

If you had paid, like, minimal attention, you would have seen that my posts in this thread have clearly expressed that I think Dubois has attitude issues. So it doesn't come off as very intelligent to pretend I'm trying to feel better about stuff or act as a PR agent. it's just ridiculous.

And speaking of ridiculous, so is trying to pretend that players have demanded a trade simply because they have a rough patch and then do better on another team. That's literally what happens to countless hockey players of all level (including the NHL) all the time.

Yeah. Sometimes players struggle. Big news. Sometimes they get traded. And sometimes they geta boost on their next team. Inless you are completely new, this is something you are familiar with. So why build a false narrative about this? What's with the need to lie and make up stuff?

they can probably make a trade to get it back from arizona, something like a future 2nd and a late draft pic.
Arizona does a favour for Mtl to give them their pick back just to get a late pick out of it? Not impossible, but unlikely.

You're giving him the benefit of the doubt. That's what's wrong with your approach. He has zero claim whatsoever to that. It was very much in question when he left here and his subsequent multiple attempts to force trades from the Jets have removed all doubt.

Yeah. It's also about being true to let it happen organically in terms of the team dynamic. You have several young players who have been learning but also enduring the losing as a group and roles are defined through this. Bringing in an outsider can negatively affect the team dynamic, especially if it's involving a prima donna element.

So the public part is he won't re-sign in Winnipeg

Is the private part he only wants to go to Montreal?

Would he consider re-signing in New York, Colorado or Toronto for example?

Its been reported by Insiders that PLD is willing to go to other teams then just the Habs.

It feels kind of like a similar scenario, although you at least have your young guns locked in. I could see Dubois come in and make 10m and wipe out all that future cap flexibility Montreal has now.
I don't think the Habs can acquire him and then pay him significantly more than Suzuki/Caulfield.. Mtl team chemistry under St louis is by all accounts great, you don't want to bring in a guy and pay him more than the other 2 and have him become a distraction. Habs will have other players who will need to be paid soon, Ghule, Slaf, Dach, whomever they pick this year at 5 - all have the possibility of being guys who will need to be paid well in 3-5 years. Hutson even projects as a guy who will make big $$ if he makes the league. he is kind off all or nothing

If Mtl gets him and it doesn't work out, he is unhappy he is almost untradeable at that point.

That said PLD could be a great add. I would not acquire him without an agreement in principle for a long term contract around Suzuki money. I could go a bit over say $8M yr on the argument that I am buying more UFA years with PLD. Under no circumstances do I acquire him without an agreement in principal in place on a long term deal (6 -8 years I'd be okay with). I' don't sell the farm to get him either. Dach, Slaf, Guhle, Hutson, my 2023 or 2024 1st rounders are all untouchable.

So far Hughes and Gorton seem to have a plan and are sticking to it, I don't think they will overpay either the jets for his rights or PLD on a contract.

He’ll be dealt before offer sheet season starts. Gotta wonder though - is there ANYWHERE where this guy would be happy? He hasn’t been a good fit anywhere in his career. He might have his golden bridge where he thinks everything will finally be okay, but I hope he’s actually being honest and realistic about it, or he’ll just be miserable there too.
In fairness, he has played for Columbus and Winnipeg, hardly places on the NHLs most desirable cities lists.

As a Toronto fan, he would add a new dimension to the team and we have the benefit of being in the East, presumably where Winnipeg would want to send him but unsure what Winnipeg would want.

I'd have to assume Knies or an extended Nylander.

We wanted someone young with a fresh set of ideas and is good with young players. We were indifferent to what language they spoke.

But unfortunately the marker requires a bi-lingual coach. Thank God for MSL.
Yeah, you searched for and found a Franco to suit your requirements. Do you see the problem with that?

I'm fine this time cause I like the hire. I think MSL is going to be a very good coach.

But the Habs have made many bad hires in the past because they needed a French speaking coach.

Like Therrien was our coach twice.

Except PLD is atrocious defensively - so points really do matter when you're one dimensional and bad at it

I didn't say PLD was strong defensively. I was making a point that points aren't the end all and be all to sum up a players full package. I thought that would've been pretty obvious.

Other traits he holds is his physicality, large body, and can play both wing and center, and potential to be a true #1C. When you something like "a 60pt player", you all too casually omit the rest of his attributes.

If the jets feel they cannot resign PLD, Scheifle and Hellybuck, and want to get younger/retool on the fly to build around Connor, Morrissey etc..

How about PLD for Marco Casper.

Detroit need a second line center, PLD is only 24 years old, fits the age of the team and with him theyre probably a playoff team, or atleast a better team.

Jets get a big piece to kickstart a rebuild. They move Scheifle and Bucky for draft picks and go from there.

Here is what we’ve learned.

« The Dubois camp will submit a list of teams that he would have interest in signing with long-term, maybe five or six teams. Of course, they will need to determine the willingness of those teams to add Dubois and his new contract before putting them on their list. The Canadiens, who reached out to the Jets as soon as their season ended, will be on that list. Cheveldayoff will then work off that list to try and negotiate the trade that helps the Jets the most. »
