It will be interesting to see what his philosophies are. Does he care at all about lefty/righty pairings? He may just load Babcock up with a bunch of lefties.

I know a lot of us would like Doughty/Karlsson/Tavares but depending how analytical Dubas is, it would make no sense for us to sign any of them. Traditionally, analytics say to stay away from the big contract FAs as statistically speaking all of those players are either exiting or have already passed their prime.
people don't need analytics to know most ufa's around 30 signed to long term big money deals don't work out well

GM's also know this but when you're under pressure to win you sometimes worry more about the present than the future .

They didn't even look for a GM, they made the easy and lazy choice and because of that they are likely to lose Mark Hunter at some point in the near future, who is one of the better scouts in the NHL

L/R might be Plan A, but they're going to run with what makes the most sense for the team. Rielly-Hainsey being an example. I understand the idea of lefty/righty, but it's easier said than done (based on having to acquire via trade/UFA, or even considering what is already in the organization).

Stome struggled keeping up in the NHL and as the league is getting faster not slower he will up against it to be anything other then a supporting player unless his foot speed increases a lot. I have not seen him play lately but he is a work in progess

Did anyone actually want strome though, in the organization I mean. I think it’s great that no one wanted him and had a trade lined up if marner was gone

No, but for the longest time we wanted a capable scouting staff that we could have confidence in (remember those days) - we put together a pretty good one, and now possibly the guy at the top of that could walk (possibly other follow if he goes to another NHL team) I'm sorry if that leaves me or anyone one else a little bit sceptically about what comes after, for me it's very likely the most important thing to our organization - especially given that we have the main pieces here already and finding young/cheap player supplement them will be key.

well its going to be up to Dubas to try to get a new one.
if Hunter leaves, he leaves. it's no big deal.
the big deal is Dubas replacing him.

(for the record had Hunter been named, he'd have to replace himself, so either way it would have been an issue)

Analytics being held up as a bad thing for Dubas only highlights the fear that emanates from the 'old boys club' of being left behind. There is nothing to suggest he only cares about analytics. His AHL team is riddled with veteran guys with strong intangibles. He's clearly not an analytics only guy... in fact, he's clearly said it's a small portion of his overall valuation.

To minimize Dubas' mentality as a GM to 'analytics' is insulting to him, and also displays a lack of intuition on the part of those forwarding this argument.
Very well said.

Unfortunately, those that have decided they dislike him have shown that they don't really care about getting to know what kind of guy he is. I don't really understand why you would do that unless you are primarily searching for a reason to be mad... but maybe that's all for the better. Some perspectives you don't want to understand.

sure, just saying it's not a foregone conclusion that Marner is the best of that group even though he looks like it right now, it's too early to know. Strome made big strides this year in the next best North American league that's seeing similar play style changes to the NHL

How can you say this? He has only ever scouted for the leafs and only has 3 years his drafts haven’t even had a chance to make the nhl? One of the best scouts is a bit much. One of the best scouts whose record is mostly outside the nhl sure

Theres a lot more that goes into the decision than just looking at what they did in the OHL... That should only be a minimal factor.

I disagree, but Ok.

What do we judge them on ? The impact they had on a current player on the Leafs players being here ?

He had 8 points in 10 games at the end of the season when they finally started using him more.

To be honest, though, the flipside of that coin does pimp him saying he won't play guys like Polak and Komarov, forgetting this is someone who has taken Alex Gudbranson around with him and employs Rich Clune on the Marlies.

Yes grooming someone (who already has all kinds of hockey experience)for 3 years under Lou's tutelage is incomprehensible .....and lazy

Says who?

Last 2 drafts were bizzare as hell. We lost half the players from the 16 draft.

I get that...there are many who do. I just thought I had missed something
No worries.
It seems the perception may be that if you aren't celebrating his hiring you must hate it.
We knew it was coming so it wasn't a surprise but I'll reserve judgement for now.
