And the sample size of those 2 guys is larger with worse stats. If Drai regresses to a low-60 point player, he'll still be in line with those guys larger sample sizes, who would be making more.

The point being that I think a larger sample size was required before you can properly determine Draisaitls value.

I really don't understand why people think they know more about what a player is worth than the GM negotiating with said player.

Agreed. Not like Chiarelli is saying "Hey Leon, heres a blank cheque". He pushed this into summer to get a fair deal. But at the end of the day you have to balance cap keeping your franchise players happy

Plus, kinda screwed with LD being an A after only 2 full years. That 1st year we kept him in the league for no reason pretty effected this contract. Imagine if LD was on his ELC for next year too and we could have 100% seen the type of player he is

But it needed to be determined this summer. Do you think he'd be happy signing 7.5 with those comparables? A bridge deal was an option, but there a very real chance these 2 guys take off, and then you have a larger cap hit to build around in 2-3 years.

It really was a no-win situation due to the winning this team did and the numbers these guys put up.

For You, a larger sample size is required. For the team and for many of us, we see the player who's earned this deal.

Again, your want for larger sample size is predicated on him signing a Bridge deal, there's nothing to suggest Leon would sign a Bridge deal.

He's an RFA. If Chia was set on signing him to one, he'd have little to no leverage.

I never said that I didnt believe in McDavid and Draisaitl. My concern (which you shared a few posts ago) was that it (along with Chiarellis struggles with negotiating) plays a role in how the rest of the roster looks in terms of the cap.

But you said that the McDavid and Draisaitl contracts will be a problem or that they are a part of the problem basically insinuating that they won't live up to their deals. IF McDavid continues to compete for Hart Trophies every year and Drai becomes a Kopitar level sidekick, these deals will actually look like bargains in 2-3 years as the market and cap continues to inflate.

My point is that the Oilers will always be playoff contenders with these two locked up to go along with Klef and Larsson locked up and Talbot in the fold and that should be cause for some happiness. The rest of the roster could be filler and they would still make the playoffs with that core. Make the playoffs and anything can happen.

Whether or not they win multiple Stanley Cups will depend on how Chia fills out the rest of the roster and how well they draft and develop. I do know that I'm more than happy to go to war with the McDavid/Draisaitl 1-2 punch for the next 8 years even if their contracts look like slight overpays today.

I believe he'll get better

in which case his proper value would be more in 2 years

He could get better and be a consistent ppg player on his own line. He had better do exactly that because he is being paid to do that.

I think a bridge deal was in fact a better risk. I think that McDavid is more of an influence on Draisaitls game that the contract justifies.

2016-17: Draisaitl with McDavid 5×5... 2.23/60
2016-17: Draisaitl w/o McDavid 5×5.... 1.79/60.

I need to see more.

But if he puts together 2 more 70+ point seasons, you're likely paying him 10M+ in 2-3 years so there's risk with either scenario. If you believe in the player, you get him locked up now and Chia is hedging his bet that Leon will continue to progress.

So Draisaitl was more productive playing along side the best player in the league(world)? What amazing insight.

You act as if he produced at twice or three times the rate with McDavid v. without.

So you think the average annual value for a 70 point player is going to be $10M+? Why is that?

Jimmi...can you have a conversation and actually stay on point? The needless exaggeration doesnt help.

He ABSOLUTELY has leverage, he's not a child guys. He can withhold services and solicit Offersheets, that's nothing to laugh at.

Offer sheets rarely happen at this stage in the offseason. You act like Drai has all the say in what term he gets. RFAs have limited rights.

No, I act like he has some say, like if he wants a long term deal, he could dig his heals in to that end, because he has some leverage.

I'm on point, he's more productive with the best player in the league then without, there's nothing to actually gleam from that comment because of course he would be. The same would be true of Matt Hendricks if he played a bunch of McDavid.

What you're trying to suggest he's more of a product of McDavid then his own player.

No...not at all.
Jimmi...trying to read between the lines of a post is not your strength. Best if you just actually read what is there.

There is a lot to gleam from this stat if you understand what its telling you.

What I am trying to suggest is that I need a bigger sample size to determine how much of an influence McDavid has on Draisaitls game.

So I need to see more of Draisaitls game without McDavid.

So you think the average annual value for a 70 point player is going to be $10M+? Why is that?

Only 19 players got 70 points last season. Out of those 19 players only McDavid and Pastrnak are younger than Drai. Only 8 players did it in both of the last 2 seasons. I think its safe to say that IF Drai does have another 70 point season, his cap hit would be higher than what it is now.

If you want to lock up one of the leagues most productive players for his entire prime, there is a premium to pay.

I get that its a small sample size but unfortunately that was the hand that was dealt to us because of MacT and the strange way he handled him in his rookie season. That extra year of ELC would have been perfect to determine his actually value. However a decision had to be made this summer and they paid the guy who was top 10 in league and playoff scoring as a 21 year old. I think Chias hands were tied.

Still its all about leverage. Even if offers sheets are extremely rare, the threat of the offer sheet gives the player that much more leverage.

The last huge offer sheet was Weber and that really screwed the predators over. IIRC They were offering a significant amount less than what he signed for. It just takes something like that to come around every 5 or so years to scare GMs enough into thinking its at least possible.

IF Chia dug his heals in at $6*6 and didn't budge, I am pretty sure Drai would have signed one for even more than what Chia ended up giving him. Chia would have had no choice but to match and the fans could turn on Chia and Drai every time he slumps.

There's a rule in hockey and basketball.

Overpay the elites, don't overpay the middle class.

Even if one thinks this is an over payment, Draisatl is elite.

I don't think this is a worry. The Oilers brass will ensure Draisaitl gets enough games with McDavid to keep him in the top 10 scoring conversation.

They need to save face with the contract size. Plus maybe 2-3 with heavy McDavid minutes provides Draisaitl enough development time that he becomes to 80 point river pusher in the last 5 years of his contract.

He is only 22

Save face for what? If they are winning it doesn't matter how they got there and PC won't care what people think about how he did his job. Just like rebuilding our defense. Is anyone questioning him now for trading Hall for Larsson?

Surprisingly there are still people out there that are furious about it. Not so much on here but twitter goes crazy whenever its brought up.

To your point though, I think a Stanley Cup would make even Chias toughest critics forgive every questionable move he has made.
