If the Leafs deliberately chose 5 years at $11.634 over 8 years at $12.5 at that point in time, either Dubas is an even bigger idiot than I previously thought or he maliciously engineered it to ensure his own personal survival.
They didn't have the money for AM at $8M. No machiavelian schemes there.

When you pour as much money as MLSE pours into scouting infrastructure perhaps they should find a way to get another 6th and/or 7th for them to utilize that research. These picks don't cost much at all.

I think the ask for 8 years was 13m+ at the time, from what I remembered reading.

Will look to see if I can find confirmation on it.

You’re likely referring to this:
The Auston Matthews ask on an eight-year extension was in the range of Connor McDavid's 16.67% of cap hit. So a ~$13.8M AAV based on projected $83M cap. The #leafs delayed more than $2M AAV per for five seasons, but will have to negotiate again with Matthews at age 26 to do it.
- Chris Johnston

Makes sense he’d have compared himself on cap percentage. “In the range of” isn’t exactly clear, but my pure speculation is that it would have been closer to 13M than 13.8M

Actually kind of wild to see how quickly McDavid’s cap percentage equivalent had escalated from 12.5M to 13.8M

The more I reflect on this draft the more I'm disgusted at Dubas. I mean wheres the picks? What do you have to show for it.
Trading picks is normal for contending teams, but they were almost all bad trades. Either rentals that hardly moved the needle or getting out of bad contracts. At least he made the picks he had count for the most part

They should. The leafs have been one of the better teams at having 6th and 7th rounders make it to the NHL. Especially European ones.

Imagine Dubas had kept all those picks and never tried to improve at the deadline. You guys would be freaking out even more that he never tried to get them over the hump.

I have no problem with the making trades on deadline
I do have problem when they are garbage players to begin with

Foligno .....>Was no reason to waste a 1st
Mrazek - 1st self inflicted wound, cost the leafs as organization

Fair point, but it should be abundantly clear by now that this group is not a rental or two away from winning 16 playoff games.

If Dubas was prevented from making more major changes but wanted himself to do so, then I guess I owe him a bit of an apology.

The thing is there's no excuse with going into a draft with only 2 or 3 picks. Dubss 2nd mistake was filling the cupboards again after depleting them.

And don't get me wrong. His drafting was solid abiet not getting the big playoff boyz.
