Agree. I look at it this way, if a roster player is going to garner a pick from 14-18 along side a 4th, for said 1st rounder I'd easily make that deal.

Let's say the Rangers get the 5th pick, take Cozens.

14th pick. Take Broberg.

26th pick. Take Pelletier.

31st pick. Take Seider.

37th pick Take Warren.

And gain cap space along the way... that crystallizes a core moving forward with trade with added cap space.
Do you think Seider will last that long? I have a feeling he ends up going between 17-23. I really want him with one of our picks, though.

Maybe. He's a wildcard for sure, saw him ranked in high teens to early 2nd.

Could be under scouted, but doesn't come from a league with a track record. Could be that guy that teams pass up on.

I so hope we end up with Hughes, Kakko, Cozens or Byram but lets say we get Dach, Krebs or Zegras would they be considered better prospects than Kravtsov?

That’s a tough one. I’d say Zegras and Dach are probably in the same general ballpark when it comes to how they’re rated as prospects, though I think Kravtsov has the higher ceiling.

A lot would depend on their D+1 seasons.

Broberg strikes me as the kind of guy who could be really high on the Rangers board:

- He's got a big size / skating combo like Kreider, Skjei, K'Andre, or Chytil.
- He already has pro experience like Andersson, Kravtsov, Chytil, or Lundkvist.
- He's a late birthday like Chytil and Lundkvist.

In general he seems to tick a lot of boxes the Rangers go for.

It seems like a lot of people here want Byram, but I would understand the case for Broberg over Byram. Broberg has a much better physical toolset and it seems like he could have more upside than Byram based on that. He hasn't stood out as much during the regular season, but it's a lot tougher to stand out in a pro league than a junior league and Broberg has been just as good, if not better, than Byram on the international stage. I like Byram too and would concede that he's a smarter player with better offensive sense, but it seems to me like Broberg might have higher upside because of his superior physical abilities and I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers had him ranked above Byram based on their recent draft picks.

Broberg has intriguing qualities to his game, but is still very raw on the defensive side of the puck & can turnover the puck just as badly. Byram logs about 20-25 minutes a night & has broken record within the WHL & Vancouver already.

It’s pretty much a no brainer for Byram to be the 1st defender selected on draft day!!

What is your rationale for thinking that though?

Do you disagree that Broberg was just as good as Byram at the Hlinka? If so, why? Do you not agree that Broberg is a bigger, better skater and that has some correlation with upside?

They were pretty close in McKenzie's scouting poll, so it seems like NHL scouts actually do think it's pretty close.

I like Byram too and, as I said before, I think he has better hockey sense, but I also think Broberg has more physical ability and I don't think it's nearly as clear cut as you're making it out to be.

Broberg isn’t physically dependent, though. His game primarily is offensive oriented. With that attributes Broberg possesses, you’d think he’d be more involved both ways. He’s not. I’m not saying he won’t develop that, but not having that ability, ATM, could hurt his stock.

Byram isn’t the most physical either, but he’ll at least battle with some effort.

Maybe. They've got a great program down there. The Czechs have done a fabulous job of building a community there. Hung out with Faksa's crew. Easy team to root for, and Heiskanen is a difference maker, but there is a significant drop-off from the top line to the 2nd line, and the 3rd line to the 4th line based on the roles they play. Same with the D-Core.

Team does a great job of keeping things to the outside. I called the Rangers getting shutout that game to a bunch of fans that wanted to make a bet. Saw the 1st 8 minutes, and was like... they aren't scoring tonight. That was a 1-0 game if I recall correctly. Rangers had an anemic offense, but the top teams in the west, they will make the most of that matchup.

I hope they make it since I want that extra 1st, but am doubtful.
They definitely have a huge hole at 2C. Was surprised they weren’t in on Hayes more than Zucc, he would fit that team amazingly well and given them two legit pairs with Benn/Seguin and Hayes/Radulov. Would also slide Faksa into a strict shutdown role which would play more to his strengths.

Broberg sounds like Ristolainen.

I'd love to draft Newhook but not with our first and I doubt he drops far enough for our later picks. I know the BCHL is a meh league but I have a good feeling about him.

I have a feeling Newhook would last until the No.25 pick. Not as high on him as most....

Personally, I love Newhook. But I can also see where teams would have some doubt and maybe see some Tyson Jost.

Looks uninterested at times. Just happy he’s getting 1.63 PPG in the playoffs after recording a 1.92 PPG for the season. I’m worried he’ll have issues against much tougher NCAA competition....

So looks like our predicament is picking either 6th or 7th, which is pretty good all things considered. We'd have to win 3 more games than to pass either one of EDM, VAN, or CHI and I just don't see that happening

edit: well, unless we move down, but I'll remain optimistic

Funny, I was wondering if he wouldn’t thrive with a level of competition that really changes him and with higher end linemates.

I think he’d be a perfectly fine pick in the teens. Just not top-8.

Same goes for Podkolzin. I was impressed with him at the u20s in Hodonin but that's about it.

... In the 2nd round!

He will be long gone by then.

I’d use a first on him, easily. Just not the 6th overall.

If we trade Kreider for a pick in the 10-15 range, I could see it happening. But hey. I just really like Dorofeyev. Exactly a year ago I said I wanted Kravtsov at 8 (before we dropped a spot in the lottery) and people thought I was crazy. Not saying I'll definitely be right about Dorofeyev but I want to dream haha

Assuming we don't end up with a top 2 pick, Id love to walk away with Cozens, Soderstrom, and Newhook. Cozens is your stud, Soderstrom is your smooth Swedish right handed defenseman, and Newhook is the bit of a gamble you get to take with multiple picks. Highly unlikely we get a chance at all 3 of these guys, but with some movement you never know...

@Mikos87 is right about Johnson- the kid has some absolutely insane wheels and just buzzes all around the ice. If he can fill out his frame and manage his defensive coverages better, there's a lot of potential there for a solid 2nd pairing dmen. The other kid I really like out of the USHL who I'm amazed is flying under the radar is Ryan Siedem. Similar style, RHD, and he's doing it all on an absolutely terrible team.

Another kid similar to Johnson that I like is Jake Lee.

The most important part of this draft is getting Fagemo with any pick after our own 1st.
I've seen him ranked in the 90s when he's been ranked at all and you ideally want to pick any player as late as possible, but I'm not sure how long I'd dare to wait on a player that should be in the top-20. Unless I feel really safe in where other teams have him ranked, I take him with the WPG pick just to be sure.

Which begs the question.... Why isn't he in the top 20? Never watched him but his numbers in SHL for a rookie are pretty mind blowing

Is it due to his WJC performance?

Poulin has pedigree would be a great value pick up, I've got reliable connections in Moncton, and they say that Pelletier is the best player to come through there this decade outside of Garland. That's high praise in my books. I've got a couple of other guys I would take over the concensus rankings.

Ryan Johnson- One of the best skaters in the draft
Marshall Warren- Played with my friends son at an elite prep school on the island, am a little biased there.
Seider- Not sure if he'll slide. Big RHD
Korczak- Big RHD, plays on an offensively challenged team. Numbers aren't the end all with him
Kokkonen- Would be a great 2nd rounder imo... you let him cook and develop. Flying under the radar

If it's 26 and 31 for the other first rounders, I'd love to add Pelletier and one of the defenseman above.
Pouilin would be a fantastic value pick in the second for Rangers. Would love to add Seider at 31, but like you, not sure he would slide that far.

If they trade into 10-15 and pass on Caufield, I’m gonna make odc look like a sunshine pumper.

Well no, but I’d be pretty damn pissed.
