I haven’t watched the games, but I mean crap, how would he translate next to McDavid? Does he instantly give the oilers a winger for mcdavid.
In the history of the NHL, how many teenagers were able to come into the league, hop on a top line and make an instant impact?

I don't think there's a player the Oilers are going to pick at 8 that is going to hop in immediately and create a large enough impact on that team where it would push them over to the top and into playoff contention, thereby placating McDavid.

Draft is deep and NYR are nowhere deep enough to trade two late 1sts and two 2nds for a random mid 1st. Take the 4 lotto tickets all day long over the 1.

This.

Also, what's the hurry to trade the farm to draft relatively early? Just use 3-4 lottery tickets on high risk, high return prospects. You'll be more likely to get a star that way that getting an all-around guy at #10.

Next year in a better draft we will draft in the top-10 again, likely top-5 if Kreider gets traded this off season, maybe even top-2. We can take a shot at a much better prospect in 2020 than whoever we're trading up for this year.

I'd really like to take a stab at Erik Karlsson types in the middle of the first round this year.

I’m still not totally convinced they trade kreider but I do not think they make the same mistake they make with Hayes. If they don’t feel they can get a hometown extension done that makes sense they will move him at the draft.

That is his best attribute, but that is it. Kaliyev is a one trick pony. Much like Whalstrom last year. If his goal scoring does not translate, he does nothing. He is my #1 "stay far, far away" choice this year.

Yeah, but that's exactly the type of high risk, high return prospects we need. We have plenty of guys who will play on the second or third line (Butcher, Lias, Howden, Lemieux, Strome, maybe Chytil and Kravtsov, maybe Vinni or Gettinger can be third liners).

What we need is someone who fell to #20 because he has a flaw, not because his ceiling is not as good as top-5 guys. Could be size, could be one trick pony, whatever. Marc Savard was awful all-around except for scoring when he was drafted. Turned into a pretty good pony.

We will miss more than we'll hit with these types of guys, but I'd rather have 1 Barzal than all of Lias, Howden and Strome.

What's the deal with Victor Söderström? Is he someone to keep an eye on? He's one of the few highly rated, right-shooting defense prospects in this draft.

How was the Hayes situation not a big win?

Don’t know if I see the Rangers bundling all their picks in one deal.

If they end up in the mid-teens, I could see them looking to move up 2-5 slots.

I think the Jets pick has a chance to be moved up as well, 2-5 slots.

I think the Rangers would dangle their second, the Dallas pick and the Tampa pick in order to make either of those moves. But I don’t think they dangle all of them.

Now, if they’re sitting at 14 and 19 on draft day, and there’s an opportunity to get to 10 and 16, yeah I can see them dangling all their remaining picks in the top 60. But that’s also a very different situation.

I also think they’d love to have that mid-teen pick and use it at as a catalyst. Remains to be seen if they can get there.

Still a long road ahead until things become clear.

The first step will be seeing what picks the Rangers actually end up with, not projections or the picks we hope we end up with.

Then the Rangers will look at their list, assign their values to each pick, and see what options, if any, exist.

The Rangers were definitely interested in getting back into the top 10. But that desire could either be quelled or fed by the Jets pick being better than expected, and whether the Dallas pick hits.

Just keep telling yourself, “Kakko, Newhook and Dorofeyev “, and things will be just fine.

Trading Hayes at the draft with a year left on his contract would have netted a higher return than at the deadline. We are just super fortunate all the cards went our way with that Winnipeg pick falling. Most likely should have been around 28th overall.

No it wouldn’t. Whole a lot of hypothetical without any proof. Hayes worked out exactly as Gorton wanted. Support kids development for 2/3 of the season and then get a return at TDL. And Winnipeg’s pick probably had a lower or just even chance to be 28-31 than 19-22.

alex newhook showed exactly why hes a top 10 talent in this otherwise loaded draft

kid was terrific playing with and against the best- even out of his natural position. no question, none, that if he played major junior this kid would be a top 10 consensus pick.

he showed his whole toolbox. smart. high hockey iq, dangerous skater, great passer, finisher, net front presence, pp finesse, solid defensive work and willingness to engage.

podkolzin didnt do much overall. flashes of brilliance but too many long stretches of unproductive play.

Likely will have to trade up a little bit to get Newhook at this point.

Yes, Carolina made out like bandits trading Skinner with a full season left.

Very debatable because he had his best year this year by a mile. His PPG was way up over his career average going into the deadline.
